As Chancellor of Charles Darwin University, it is an honour and a privilege to congratulate
the graduands of 2009.
Based on 50 years of education tradition, Charles Darwin University was formed through
the merger of the Northern Territory University, Centralian College, the Northern Territory
Rural College and the Menzies School of Health Research. This state of the art institution
has grown into a place of learning for an increasing number of Territorians and people from
across our nation and the world.
Charles Darwin University offers a fresh approach to education, with a wide range of study
options, excellent standards of teaching and an engaging learning environment. This is a
university that aims to inspire its students to acquire the skills and knowledge to change
their world for their own good and the good of the community.
As well as being a celebration of knowledge, graduation ceremonies allow students to
share their pride and satisfaction in achieving their goals with their family, friends and the
University staff who have supported and encouraged them throughout their studies.
Graduation should not be a farewell to Charles Darwin University. We look forward to
welcoming back graduates as members of the Alumni or through continuing formal studies
and to the many symposia, lectures, concerts and events held at the University each year.
Congratulations again to the graduates of 2009. We have no doubt that in the years ahead
we will be hearing of your great achievements in your work and in the community.
Richard Ryan, AO
Chancellor

U n i v e r s i t y
This is a very important evening in your lives as you graduate from Charles Darwin University. Each of you will have grown in knowledge and understanding during your time as students at the University and each of you, by making the most of your university experiences will make a difference not only to your own future and that of your families but just as importantly to the Northern Territory and the global community in which you live and work.
You are part of a dynamic and rapidly changing world particularly in the generation of new knowledge and new approaches to solving complex globally relevant problems – ongoing change is quite simply part of life. Change also provides opportunities and challenges that I hope you will embrace, and as a result, make a real contribution to the adaptive and evolving society that we live in. Remember Charles Darwin, the namesake of our University once said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, not the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change”.
We live in an age where the amount of information on any subject is growing at an ever-increasing rate and technology is rapidly changing the way we live, work and enjoy ourselves. To respond to this changing environment, and to be a successful contributor to it, you must continue to learn and to strive to apply what you have learned to the challenges you face. I hope your time at Charles Darwin University has given you a love of life long learning and that you will be open to new ideas, and to doing things differently and for the better in the years ahead.
As graduates of Charles Darwin University, you are joining the alumni of a university that sees its role as providing vibrant learning, life-changing experiences and graduating individuals with the ability to be excellent thinkers, workers and members of society: a university that equips its graduates with the generic skills to thrive in a complex world.
I hope you have enjoyed your university experience and that you will continue to learn and, through your words and actions, contribute to the development and reputation of Charles Darwin University, a university that aspires to work with its alumni, wherever they may be, to provide an enriching experience.
This evening is one of celebration. You have achieved a significant milestone and we are proud of you. All of us in the University join with your family and friends in saying “congratulations” and best wishes for a bright and rewarding future.

Caroline Elisabeth LehmannThesis title: Vegetation dynamics in north Australian savannas
Savannas are characterised by a C4 grass understorey and a discontinuous tree layer, occurring in tropical and sub-tropical regions worldwide. Vegetation dynamics of savannas has long remained an ecological conundrum yet is of immense applied and theoretical significance. I asked: What determines the spatial pattern of tree biomass in Australian mesic savannas? These savannas occur over 450, 000km2 of the continent, and I investigated this question at four scales: sub-continental, regional, landscape and the population level via remote sensing, landscape ecology, data syntheses and statistical modelling. The different perspectives on this same problem enabled quantification of the roles of rainfall, fire, herbivory and resource-limitation in determining vegetation dynamics in time and space. In mesic savannas, across a range of scales tree biomass is highly variable, primarily in response to rainfall, fire and their interaction driving cycles of canopy growth and renewal. The perspective provided by this thesis demonstrates the importance of fire in both savanna persistence and the regional carbon cycle.

Wendy Elizabeth Beresford-Maning Thesis title: For the love of God: a history of some Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the Top End of the Northern Territory.
This thesis explores the work and lives of three Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSCs) who have worked in the Top End of the Northern Territory since the 1950s.
Their work is situated in the historical context of the Christian missionary enterprise as well as that of Aboriginal Affairs in Australia. The thesis then focuses on the lives and work of the MSC founder, Father Jules Chevalier MSC, together with Father John Leary MSC (missionary priest), Brother Gerry Burke MSC (teacher) and Brother Ted Merritt MSC (jack-of-all-trades). The thesis also examines the nature of history, memory and truth to establish a theoretical framework for the biographies.

Sebastian IglesiasThesis title: Seasonal Physiology of the tropical lizard Lophognathus temporalis from urban and natural bush populations.
The lizard Lophognathus temporalis is a conspicuous inhabitant of urban and natural bush habitats in and around Darwin. Given that urban and bush habitats are quite different, I hypothesized that differences may have also arisen between urban and bush dwelling populations of this lizard. To test this, I compared their size, shape and many important aspects of their physiology (such as metabolism, evaporative water loss and digestion).
I found that L. temporalis from urban habitats were on average much larger than their bush dwelling counterparts. However, although the physiology of both groups was highly variable with respect to season (wet vs. dry), with respect to habitat, the physiology of urban and bush lizards was very similar. My results demonstrate that human influence can have a dramatic effect on the rate of change in animals and also provides important insights into our understanding of how animals change in response to changes in their environment.
Mohammed Abdul Mazid Thesis title: Comparative Ultrastructure, Physiology and Phylogeny of Two Tetraselmis Species Isolated from Australian Waters
Two strains of Tetraselmis, namely NT18 and CS317 were selected for this work. The strains were isolated from Darwin Harbour and Moreton Bay, respectively. The aim was to find the similarities and differences of the two isolates in terms of their growth, pigment characteristics, morphology, ultrastructures, and phylogeny, using standard protocol of light microscope, transmission electron microscope, nuclear SSU rRNA sequences, growth studies and pigment profile.
I found that NT18 and CS317 cells were different in respect of cell size, eyespot, and flagellar hair type. With respect to the pyrenoid structure and pigment profile, they had the same pyrenoid structure and pigment profile and finally, they formed a clade with other Tetraselmis species with high supporting bootstrap values in both the analyses. On the basis of the results obtained, they constitute two new species as Tetraselmis casuarinaca sp. nov. and Tetraselmis moretonica sp. nov. (Chlorodendrales, prasinophyceae, Chlorophyta), respectively.
Mark Barry Schultz Thesis title: Phylogeographic and phylogenetic studies on Australian burrowing freshwater crayfish (Parastacidae).
Freshwater crayfish are important elements of aquatic communities but are highly threatened by human impacts such as land clearing, urbanisation and pollution. The centre of diversity for the southern hemisphere crayfishes is southeastern Australia – a region with a high urban population and rural development. Cutting-edge DNA sequencing, bioinformatics and Geographical Information Systems were used to examine the evolutionary history of burrowing freshwater crayfishes in the southeast and to determine regions of conservation significance. Five new species and one new genus of freshwater crayfish were discovered, making southeastern Australia a centre of freshwater crayfish diversity that is unrivalled anywhere in the world. Present day freshwater crayfish distributions are likely the result of drying of the continent 25 million years ago and an increase in sea-level through Bass Strait. The Grampians and Otways mountains have provided critical habitat during the history of these species and will likely be important refuges into the future.

The Australian Federation of University Women (Northern Territory) Inc (AFUW-NT) provided assistance in gowning for the Graduation ceremony this evening.
This is a fund-raising activity providing scholarships for Northern Territory, and now East Timorese, women students. We offer three $1000 scholarships annually in the Northern Territory – one each to an undergraduate, a postgraduate and one identified for an Indigenous woman student. Three scholarships are offered to women studying at the Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosae, Dili. The AFUW NT Scholarships are offered in association with the CDU Foundation.
AFUW-NT is a member of the Federal Council of the Australian Federation of University Women Inc (AFUW Inc). AFUW Inc joined the International Federation of University Women (IFUW) in 1924. IFUW has NGO status with the United Nations, and is a voice for graduate women, promoting the advancement of women worldwide and their equal opportunity through initiatives in education, welfare, friendship, the environment and peace.
Membership in AFUW Inc is open to all women who hold an undergraduate degree or its equivalent from a University anywhere in the world. Employment in a University or any other location is not a requirement.
AFUW Inc administers some $400,000 in scholarship funds, and has Standing Committees on education, youth, international issues, the environment and peace in which AFUW-NT participates and contributes. AFUW Inc is a member of the four Secretariats established by the Federal Government to advise on women’s perspectives on rural, economic, human rights and health issues.
