2017 Chapter U Couple of the Year Mike & Jinger Kaufman
2017 Chapter U Individual of the Year Tom Hampshire
Hello Chapter U,
It’s the tenth of the month and I am supposed to
have the article ready for Missy by now. Things
have been getting in the way again this month, but
it could be a good thing they did. Monday at the
Gathering I mentioned that some things were
changing. Well the Wing World came yesterday,
and in it were some of the changes.
Rider Education is now Ride Coordinator. That means that Tom will not have to give a
safety talk at every Gathering. His talks will be before the rides themselves, it will be a
rider’s type of meeting, reminding us of some safety rules.
Have you seen all the rides that are in the magazine? Mike and Jinger should have
memories of some of the places that might have been talked about in one of the articles.
When I saw the picture of the Yellowstone Park sign I had to try and figure out if it was one
of the ones Harriet and I went by, as well as trying to determine if we rode some of the
damn roads two years ago.
That was so much fun, I can’t wait until we have the time to go on another trip like that.
Maybe the eastern states this time.
Reminiscing is nice but back to work.
We have Region D/ Michigan Rally this weekend. August 10th‐ 12th. Harriet and I are riding
up on Saturday for the day, Marv is feeling brave and willing to go with us.
August 8th‐ September 2nd is Wing Ding. Should be some good riding there.
Marc and Robbie are taking a group to the Ark on September 8th – 10th. If anyone had any
questions or want to go with them contact Marc.
Then on September 23rd is the Northern IN Fall Fest in Warsaw.
Remember the best way to get the most out of Chapter life is,
PARTICIPATE, PARTICIPATE, PARTICIPATE.
Hoping all of your rides are safe.
Jay and Harriet

Hello Chapter U,
We were able to get away and take an 1850 mile, 7‐day
ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway. But when we returned I
noticed something strange with our bike. After checking
it out I discovered the rear differential had went out. And
so, I spent a few days replacing that and what a difference
I have noticed, I don’t need my reverse girl, yes, girl not
gear, to back the bike up!
And so dear friends part of that is why we didn’t make it to the great times some of you
were able to take part in such as.
A dinner ride led by John and JoAnn Taylor to the Stable in Quincy Michigan, where 13
members could enjoy Friends having fun and fellowship. And they ended the evening
with an ice cream stop. And then on the 5th, 7 members met at Mamma’s Place for
breakfast before heading over to setup for our Annual Hog Roast.
What great weather we had for our Hog Roast. We had 52 people attend. They got
involved in eating a delicious spread, chicken chunkin, corn hole, lawn darts, auction,
ice cream and awesome desserts and ended the day with a ride led by Tom.
Once again, keep safe and see you soon!

Some Safety Tips to Stay Safe
The open road is always an adventure. You never know what might be around the bend, so make sure you're prepared for whatever the road has in store for you.
Whatever type of ride you prefer, sharing the road is essential. Here are some motorcycle safety tips to help keep yourself and your passengers safe.
Motorcycle safety tips for operators
If you're new to owning a motorcycle, perhaps you've already received your motorcycle license, required by most states. You're also going to need insurance.
Consider participating in a hands-on training course conducted in a controlled environment. These are beneficial for both new and experienced riders.
Wear protective gear, and be sure passengers are protected too. Helmets, clothing, gloves, and eyewear can all reduce injury if you're involved in a crash.
Choose a bike equipped with Antilock Braking System (ABS). ABS prevents wheels from locking up and helps avoid skidding.
Be an engaged rider, focused on the road. Watch out for distracted drivers.
Always ride sober, including avoiding prescription medications that may affect how you ride.
Be courteous and respectful of other motorists; share the road.
Follow at a safe distance - two seconds behind the vehicle in front of you is best in ideal conditions. Allow more time and distance in bad weather, heavy traffic, or as you approach curves and intersections.
Stay in your lane. Other motorists are more likely to see you when you're in a travel lane.
Obey traffic laws, especially speed limits.
Always use turn signals.
Pretend you're invisible to drivers or other vehicles; take precautions to be seen, including wearing bright colors and using your headlight at all times..

Chapter U Minutes August 7, 2017
Jay opened the gathering with the Pledge of Allegiance.
Jay thanked all those who helped with the hog roast and those who cooked the pork.
We had 56 guests— part of reason for lower attendance could be the central Indiana Fall Rally was
the same day. Jay will check with Lonny to see if he has a date set for next year yet so we can
adjust accordingly.
Jay heard from Walter and Betty Bemesderfer. They received the money we collected and will use
it for travel expenses when Walter goes to follow up appointments. We will continue to collect til
the end of the year.
The October 2 breakfast ride is still open. Jim and Judy Swift will check with the church to see if
we can use it on Dec 2 for our Christmas party.
Past Events:
Dinner ride was led by John and Jo Ann Taylor. Thirteen attended at the Stables in Quincy Mi.
We then went for ice cream at Sunset Cove on Marble Lake.
The breakfast ride was a breakfast at Mama’s Place in Angola. We then went to Commons Park to
set up for the hog roast.
Upcoming Events:
8/10‐8/12—Region D/Michigan Rally in Evart MI, Osceola County Fairgrounds. Theme is 1920’s
Beach Party. Jay and Harriet and Marv are going up on Saturday. Anyone else wanting to go
should meet at Meijer at 5:30 am.
8/29‐9/2—Wing Ding 39 at Grapevine TX.
9/23—Northern Indiana GWRRA Fall Fest at Center Park in Warsaw from 10:00‐2:00. We should
bring a non‐perishable dessert. Cost is $3 per person. Lunch is provided.
Jokes: Steve Safford told a joke.
Reports:
Riders Ed— Tom spoke about properly packing your bike in order to keep the load balanced,
TRC is being held on Oct. 7 at 9:00 am in Fort Wayne at the Ivy Tech parking lot. 4 of our group
are going.
MEC— Marv reports all contacts were made. He is receiving his report from the district MEC’s late
and then that doesn’t leave much time for Marv to make his contacts.
Sunshine Gal—Harriet picked 3 people to play minute‐to‐minute game called Stack em. Player had
to stack 39 red solo cups and 1 blue cup the fastest. Laurel, Tina and Jenny played. Laurel won
the prize of one free large pizza.
Harriet also recognized birthdays and anniversaries by awarding chocolate chip cookies to those
celebrating.
Candy Jar—Missy guessed closest –how many jelly bellies in the jar.
Good Deed Award was given to Jo Ann Taylor for all her time and talents spent sewing a new Chapter U
banner. We all appreciate it very much.
Other topics:
Those who want to go on the Arc Encounter trip September 8 and 9 should contact Mike and Jinger or
Marc and Robbie. Marc has a block of rooms reserved so if you want one, please call the hotel directly
and tell them you want one of his rooms.
Jay pointed out that the dues for next year have increased. We all should have received a letter with the
costs.
Also, GWRRA has decided to eliminate the Regions from the structure, effective Jan 1, 2018. There will
be other changes as well. The chapter educator position will be removed but each chapter should have
a chapter ride coordinator.
MEC will be more active in planning more social activities.
The point of the changes is to have less structure and paperwork and more fun.
There will be a District meeting on August 19 at the Maple Grove church in Anderson. All members are
welcome. The topic of the day is the new changes in GWRRA.
Jay asked for any suggestions for improving the hog roast. Should we have two kinds of meat? Ride at
different time?
Also, does anyone want to do an overnight right or a day ride.
The District Plaque is at Chapter B in New Albany. They meet the second Sunday at 5:30 and gathering
starts at 6:30.
The Region Plaque is at Fairborn Ohio. The gathering is the fourth Saturday at 9:00 am. A nice side trip
with this is going to the Air Force museum in Fariborn. Please contact Tom or Jay if you are interested in
either or both of these trips.
Gathering was adjourned.
