What is a combustion reaction?

• Combustion reaction is a reaction in which oxygen reacts with another element or compound (generally a hydrocarbon) to produce energy in the form of heat and light

Element + O2 “oxide” + ENERGY

Hydrocarbon: organic compound consisting entirely of hydrogen and carbon

The 3 components in a combustion reaction

• Fuel• Oxygen (O2)• Heat

Example: When wood burns(fuel), O2 must be present and it produces heat and energy.

Two types of combustion

COMPLETE (Most Common)• Clean combustion with

a hydrocarbon produces carbon dioxide (CO2) and water

INCOMPLETE• Unclean combustion

with a hydrocarbon produces carbon and/or carbon monoxide (CO) as well as carbon dioxide (CO2)

Balancing Equation Review

• In every balanced equation, each side of the equation has the same number of atoms of each element.

• Balance Carbon and Hydrogen FIRST Balance Oxygen LAST
