TECHNOLOGY TRENDS

• U.S. (1970s and 1980s): The decline of U.S. industrial competitiveness in the 1970s and 1980s became a subject of increasing concern to people in education, industry, and government– Brief Analysis of This Trend: The decline of

U.S. industry during those two decades is widely perceived to have resulted not from an inability to develop new technologies but from the failure to manage available and emerging technologies in an effective and timely manner

TECHNOLOGY TRENDS (Contd.)

• India (2000 – 2010): With the availability of abundance of skilled and highly talented workforce, it was really not difficult for enterprises like Infosys, TCS, WIPRO etc. to capitalize on the opportunity offered by developed nations for software solutions at a considerable low cost– Brief Analysis of This Trend: Success of Indian IT

outsourcing industry is due to entrepreneurial mindset and technology prowess of its talented IT professional. On a different note, almost everything was lacking in management of technology related to hardware domain and telecommunication manufacturing

TECHNOLOGY TRENDS (Contd.)

• China (2011 – 2015): The aim is to come out of the imitation-tag and move into an economy that derives strength from innovation. China's State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) received more than half a million invention patents out of a total of about 1.6 million patent applications filed in 2011. Out of these, over 172,000 invention patents were granted. By year 2015, the annual target for patent filings is 2000,000 (two million). This includes (a) utility-model-patents for new engineering features in a product and (b) invention-patents involving higher creativity for practical use– Brief Analysis of This Trend: A large share in global list of

patents will carry a lot of meaning in future. Chinese companies are being helped by authorities in applying for overseas patents and many financial incentives are offered. China patent strategy is a part of broad national plan to boost innovation

TECHNOLOGY TRENDS (Contd.)

• These three trends in US, India and China are the indicator of technology trends in these countries. One can further explore the following issues:– Is China's patent strategy meant for seeking weapons against

foreign companies?

– What are the gaps in administrative set up, processes and visioning for an innovation-driven economy in India? Use Political-Economic-Social-Technological-Environmental-Legislative (PESTEL) framework to analyze current situation.

– How can India sustain its leading edge in global software market? What are the recent efforts at national level to boost manufacturing sector?

– Survey the recent reports on global competitiveness and find how nations figure on different parameters of competitiveness.
