• Nixon decided to start the “Christmas bombings” – American bombed North Vietnam for 12 days

straight with B-52s– Only pausing on Christmas Day

• After the U.S. North Vietnam returned to a peace agreement on January 27,1973– “ending the war and restoring the peace in

Vietnam” is what the agreement stated

• The United States promised to withdraw troops and both sides agreed to exchange of prisoners of war.

• After 8 years of war, this was the longest war in American history

South Vietnam Falls

• When the United States were pulling out their troops South Vietnam`s peace treaty collapsed– March 1975, the North Vietnamese army

launched a full-scale attack on the south– Thieu desperately appealed to the United States

for help

• Nixon showed support for the south and said we would launch an attack back– But Nixon pulled out under pressure, and the new

president Ford took over
