A.Physical Change1. Anything that changes the matter but is still the same matter
2. example: crumpled paper, crushed aluminum can, sliced bread3. Changes of State:
a. solid, liquid, gasb. matter changes from state to the other
4. Changes in Shape or Form
a. dissolving is physical change, table sugar in liquid
b. Other examples:-bending, crushing, breaking, chopping-methods to separate mixtures
1. substance is transformed into a different substance2. Also known as a chemical reaction
3. example: hydrogen peroxide
4. new substances has new properties 5. Examples:
a. burning of natural gas
b. combustion:-when fuels burn in air
-gas, candle wax, gasoline, oil
c. electrolysis:
-use electricity
d. oxidation:
-combines with oxygen
-combines bright metal with sulfur
B. Chemical Change
e. tarnishing
6. Conservation of matter
a. Antoine Lavoisier, french chemist, 1770s
b. Matter is not created or destroyed in chemical or physical changes.
c. Atoms are rearranged in the reaction, but they do not disappear
