Dear Parents and Guardians,

St. Joseph Parish School is accredited by both the Western Association of Schools

and Colleges (WASC) and the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA).

Our last Accreditation Visit was in 2014 when we were given the maximum 6 year

term of Accreditation until 2020. Now in 2020, we will have another Visiting Team

reviewing our self-study and will be arriving on Sunday, February 23rd to meet the

administration, faculty and staff. The major areas of the self-study are: Catholic

Identity, Organization, Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. Support Services,

and Resources (Enrollment, Finance, Development). Since 2018, we have been

collecting and analyzing school data, including surveys from the Faculty, Staff,

Students, Parents, Board Members, and our Priests. The school and parish also

gathered for two Town Hall Meetings. The goal of the self-study is to continue

Improving Student Learning. The chairperson of the Visiting Team is the Associate

Superintendent of Schools in the Archdiocese of San Francisco, the other members

include a teacher from one our Catholic Schools, an Early Learning Center

Administrator from Chaminade University, and a Principal from one of our Catholic

Schools. Beginning, Monday, February 24th, the Visiting Team will be visiting class-

rooms, meeting with our faculty, staff, students, PTG and School Board members, and

Reflection:

The early Christians were accused of not obeying the law. They did not

observe fasts, food laws and ritual ablutions as practiced by Jewish tra-

dition. They no longer required circumcision or compliance with the

strict prohibitions on Sabbath activities. To the Jews, it meant the un-

dermining of the Mosaic law and the prophets. The Mosaic law was

made when Israel came out of slavery. It was intended to make Israel

strong by living in a spirit of righteousness.

Jesus says, "Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law and

the Prophets." He did not abolish the law, rather He concretised the

abstractness of the law concerning the most pertinent aspect of human

relationship and ethics. Just like a professional psychologist, Jesus goes

about explaining how to handle anger, marital relationship, matters

concerning divorce and swearing. The post-modern society, which em-

phasizes individual satisfaction and subjective fulfillment, has unfortu-

nately lost touch with some of the fundamental measures oriented to-

wards dignity, culture and relationships. The teachings of Jesus regard-

ing these benchmarks of human relationship had been revolutionary

then, as they are today. Most of us are like the Pharisees and the

Scribes who follow the letter of the Law but not the spirit of the Law.

Let us accept the teaching of Jesus as what is possible, feasible and cor-

rect and live it in our day-to-day life.

What is Lent?

Lent is our time of preparation. A 40-day

journey of prayer, fasting and almsgiving,

Lent is a journey that spans Ash Wednesday

through Holy Week, culminating in the great celebration of Easter.

As Catholics, the spiritual pillars of prayer, fasting and

almsgiving guide us in daily reflection on our

own lives as we strive to deepen our relationship

with God and neighbor—no matter where in the

world that neighbor may live.
