C-J Upsets Oakwood In Season Opener
With 24 seconds to go, the score a 14-14 tie, Oakwood lined up for what would be the game winning field goal. Yet at the snap of the ball Steve Gemza burst through the line blocking the kick, the ball bouncing into the arms of Mike Laffer who ran 57 yards for the game winning score.

Describing Michael Loffer's style of play is not very hard . A true definition of his play would be the word "heart." He loved the game, the interaction of fighting side by side with his teammates and never giving up. He was always making the big play. Whenever there was a fumble or interception he always seemed to be the one coming up with the ball, turning the game around. He was the backbone of the defense, both in his playas he led the team in tackles, fumble recoveries and key plays, but also in the leadership he provided. His hard work inspired others to play above their capabilities for he showed the qualities of never giving up and playing even when hurt. Nothing could keep him from playing. One statement that could sum it all up: "God's defense must have been terrible, for he needed Michael to make it strong. "

Playing this year was a gift; it made all of us grow and learn a newer concept of the . meaning of life. Although we finished only at 3-6-1 in all of our games, we kept scratching and fighting to the end. We developed the attitude of "never say die." All we seniors know this attitude is necessary for situations facing us today. We all stuck together and found that we had strength. Besides developing a feeling of brotherhood on the field, we had alot of fun, but most importantly we learnea to love each other and respect each, man in his own way.

Volleyballers Take GDL This season was the most action packed year ever. With victories over arch rivals Jefferson, Carroll and Alter, we clinched the GDL championship for the first time in three years with an over all fantastic record of 13-4. To help our team to such a successful season, the Most Valuable Player Award went to Joyce Walker. The Most Improved Award went to Bonnie Coffey who never gave up and was always striving to be that much better. The so called "Wild and Crazy" - Most Spirited Award - went to Teresa Pazitney for all her efforts at bringing the team to an unstoppable high.
This season was quite emotional because for the fourth season in a row we had a new coach. Miss Regan, better known as "Eggy", did her best and united the team which was essential to winning. This victorious season was dedicated to the seven seniors on the team and will be treasured always.

C-J "Graduates" Its First Senior Soccer Players
Four years ago coach Don Weimert organized a Men's Soccer Team made up of students who had a desire to play other area high school soccer teams. This year brought about the graduation of the last four members of C-J's very first Soccer Club. They were Ken Harsha, Keith Bruns, JR Tompkins, and Joe Smith. Eight seniors will be leaving the club this year. These men contributed to the team spirit and gave 110% effort throughout these past seasons. The Soccer Club's transition to success is evident by coming from a 6-7-3 season last year to a 12-6-1 record this year.
C-J is looking toward future talented teams with many members of the Reserve filling the shoes of the seniors.
Receiving special recognition were Mark Wilson for making First Team All Area, Tony Bonfig for receiving Honorable M.ention, and Keith Bruns and Craig Eifert for making the Greater Dayton League Team. Look for many more exciting seasons from this team!

Oh no! A new coa,ch! And a man at that. We were not accustomed to having a male coach, and Mr. Ziadain was not used to coaching a bunch of wild young women like us. As the season went on, however, we became one big family and took pride in our team. Right from the start the name of the game was spirit, effort and most of all, sportsmanship. Despite the hard work involved, we shared many good times; bus rides, Friday milkshakes and after-match dinners. The Varsity had a very successful season record of 9-5-0, and the Reserve, coached by
Mrs. Beach, ended with a 5-5-3 record.
The final match brought a certain sadness to the Seniors who knew it would be the last time they would play tennis for C-J. We left, however, knowing that the future of the C-J Women's Tennis Team is bright, because of the fine players who remain to carryon the tradition of a successful and exciting team.

Cross Country T earn Runs In District 4th Straight Year
The Cross Country Team, led by Seniors Chuck Bridgman and Todd Spees, ran the season in the typical fashion of starting out slowly and building up steam.
In late summer the team found only four returning varsity runners: Ray Geiger, Mark Grothouse, Todd Spees, and Chuck Bridgman. The first few meets were spent breaking in the rookies, but by the end of the year Coach Bro. Bill Grundish had the underclassmen pulling their ~wn weight .
At Sectionals the tear;n turned in their best effort by taking third, but breaking a three year Sectional winning streak. At Districts the Eagles faltered, and after going to State three years in a row, missed a ticket to Columbus.
Bridgman, however, did win Districts and went on to win the State Individual Race with a new record of 12:08 to uphold C-J's traditionally fine Cross Country Team.

If At First You Don't Succeed The influence of the C-J Student Council can be felt in almost every facet of our school. The council, headed up by six officers, gets involved in not only school functions, but also works as a sounding board for student concerns and ideas.
At the beginning of the year, one of my opening prayers asked for " enough problems so that we will learn to deal with them, but not too many so that they will discourage us." As every Student Council officer will remember, though, this was a year of many changes which caused "problems" for every committee and the council as a whole. But, what we hope every student will remember, is the success that the officers had in achieving their goals. I think all involved in Student Council will always be able to look back at this year and laugh at the hard times which made us grow, and smile as they think about the good times which gave us happiness and satisfaction .

BSU Brings Culture To C-J
The Black Student Union presented Cultural Week, an attempt to acquaint students with the social problems faced by people of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The presentation consisted of a two-panel discussion. Members of several ethnic groups were questioned by select members of the BSU. The presentation was both an enlightening and entertaining experience. Other aspects of Cultural Week included traditional dancing of various countries and exhibits outside the cafeteria.

Student Ombuds: Ready To Listen, Ready To Care The Student Ombudsmen program provides representatives to students in conflict situations between the members of the C-J community. We spend most of our time listening to complaints and working to resolve problems. Being an ombudsman means caring, listening, and being able to communicate well with others in order to make the best of a troubling situation.
This organization couldn't be possible without the dedicated support of Brother Bob Wiethorn and Mrs. Barbara Hinkle. In recognition of the contributions 'she has made to C-J through moderating the Ombuds program, Mrs. Hinkle was presented the 1979 Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews.

The best way to describe the C-J Marching Band and Jazz Lab would be hectic. The early Sunday morning and late Thursday night practices for the Marching Band prepared us for various competitions, parades, Court House Square appearances, and Friday night football games. To top off the season , the Parent's Music Club hosted the third Annual Marching Band Invitational which was a smashing success.
For the C-J Jazz Lab, this year was a memorable one. The Jazz members enjoyed the annual trek to Notre Dame plus the honor of playing for the La Sertoma meeting at the Ramada Inn.
The C-J Pep Band enjoyed much good fortune this season . At numerous competitions, the band took either 1st or 2nd place displaying superb showmanship. For each organization, this year is one which will be long remembered'.

Applause Applause
For Bro. Bruce To everyone who knows him, Brother Bruce seems almost super-human. He has been at C-J since it began, doing a job that is done by at least two teachers in other high schools. Doing that is a task in itself, but Bro. Bruce has shaped the C-J Music Department into an award winning organization that not only develops a person musically, but socially and emotionally as well. The impact he has had in the music department will not be forgotten. The '78-'79 year was the most successful year ever for C-J music.
So as Bro. Bruce bows out as Band Director, we all wish him the best of everything and thank him for the love and concern he has given to C-J . The legacy he leaves is one of love and concern for each other and for musical excellence.

For the C-J Symphonic Band and Choruses, one word sums it all up: success. The Symphonic Band, Mixed Chorus and Men 's Chorus all received superior ratings in the district contest enabling them to go to State. At the state contest, the Symphonic Band and Mixed Chorus received excellent ratings while the Men's Chorus again received a superior rating.
After such a rewarding season, the Music Department presented its finishing touch, the Festival of Music hosted by Steve Kirk. It was a memorable evening which was both happy and sad. The Festival of Music marked the end of a most successful season.

A Special Night For Special Dads
"What makes your father a Special Daddy?" The answer to this question could be seen in the faces of the daughters attending this year's Father-Daughter Dance held on February 24. The dance was truly a success with over four hundred proud dads and daughters dancing, building beer can pyramids, and anxiously awaiting the announcement of the winners of the annual essay contest. "Five Leaf Clover" set memories to music, while the Greek Orthodox Church provided a perfect setting for a perfect evening.

The attitude of the Chaminade - Julienne Wrestling Team was a very unique one; it was to symbolize and honor Michael Loffer. Mike was a fun person; we had a lot of fun. Mike was a competitive athlete; we were a competitive team. This inspiration gave direction to the 1978-79 team under coach Bob Borgerding. We were involved in tournaments for the majority of the season and the team placed consistently in the top 4. The high point of the season was winning the C-J Invitational, an event involving 6 teams.
We had 7 seniors and 5 returning lettermen which served as a solid foundation for the team. We had 4 district qualifiers, in which Mike Raiff placed 5th, the best finish on the team for the season. Captain Mike Smith won the Journal Herald rating and took all-area honors with his 26-2 season record.
Chaminade - Julienne can be proud of the 78-79 Wrestling Team, for it displayed a character of dedication and spirit which is necessary on any successful team. We'd like to thank our devoted fans and parents for their great support, and Mr. Borgerding who has made wrestling a most rewarding .sport for us.

Eagles Soar To District Fin~ls After Slow Start The Men's Basketball Team, sporting new uniforms and warmups, enjoyed one of their finest seasons in recent years, boasting a 13-9 record and advancing to the District finals. Although starting off slowly, the team experienced a comeback in the second half of the season, winning eight of their last eleven games. This winning streak took the Eagles to four tournament games, the first of which was an upset against Bellbrook. After an easy victory over Mason, C-J then beat Hamilton-Badin in an exciting game decided by a last-second shot by junior Steve Block. It was Hamilton-Ross that finally stopped the fighting men of C-J in the fourth game of the district finals. With three seniors starters and several junior hopefuls, the team of the '79-'80 season promises to be a good one.

Spirited Girls Post Best Season Y et This season for Women's Basketball was the best in C-J history. We started out like gang-busters going through half the season with a 10-0 record, not to mention being Num· ber 1 in the Journal Herald ratings. We pay great tribute to our faithful fans and coach for an overwhelming finish of 15-4. First Honors went to freshman Colleen Curran. She received the Most Promising Player Award for her determination and for her understanding of the fundamentals of the game.
For her unusual ability to rebound, leap, and steal, Kim Adams was awarded the Most Improved Player Award. Four year varsity player, leslie Bourne, received the Most Coachable Award as a player willing and able to understand all facets of the game.
The Most Spirited Award went to Teresa Pazitney for her ability to generate support. In the huddle before the beginning of each game, she would say "THIS IS IT!" It seems funny now, but every game was "IT" - the most important. Teresa also received her Four Year Varsity Award and the Super Shooter Award in foul shooting for 70% or better.
The Most Valuable Player Award went to Jane Meyers. She lead the team to its very successful season and was considered its silent but deadly leader. Jane also received her Four Year Varsity Award. Over all the season was a great success. Thanks Miss Holton!

UTBU: A Family Experience
UTBU . , . we know the meaning of the words, Unhealthy Too Be Unpleasant, but I feel they could have had a special double meaning ... an Unusual and Thrilling, But also Unique experience. UTBU brought everyone, cast and crew, into a very close "Family" which each will always treasure. "How late are they open?", "Do they clean foxes?", "Dew Drop Inn", "TMC", "Raggedy Ann", and "Have a cookie" are sayings that became as much a part of us as the play. UTBU also became the fourth and last time Mary Ann, Colleen and I would be a part of a C-J production. But we retire happily, leaving with the knowledge that others will find good friends and lasting memories as we have on C-J's stage. And we must not forget our two devoted directors Mr. Jeff Keating, and Mr. Greg Cross, for without them UTBU would never have been possible.

There were all the objects associated with paradise: palm trees, mountains, flowers, and a bridge -thanks to some great decorating ideas from the Prom Committee. There was also the ever present love, laughter, and continuous dancing - thanks to the students of C-J . Everyone was sporting their own style, and everyone looked beautiful. The evening was marked with a few surprises, but there was no surprise as to the amount of fun everyone was having. Music was provided by Cliche. C-J provided all the other necessary materials: fun, a little rowdiness, a lot of smiles, and the magic created by the students of C-J whenever they get together.

Kavanaugh Named Coach Of The Year
The 1979 baseball season was a very successful one, though if you looked at our win-loss record, it wouldn't seem like it. At 12-13 we accomplished more than any other baseball team at C-J in 5 years. Going into the tournament we were seeded number 2 behind last year's state-runner up, Oakwood. After beating Eaton and Dixie in the sectionals, we played Oakwood in the sectional finals and romped them by a score of 7-4. We lost in the district finals to a strong-hitting team of Edgewood, by a score of 8-4.
With one starter coming back from last year and a no-name pitching staff, we surprised many people by going as far as we did. Much of our success was contributed to our enthusiastic and talented underclassmen, led by three starting sophomores. We had a .295 team batting average which gave every opposition trouble as we were never shut-out. The season was topped off with our coach, Kevin Kavanaugh, receiving coach of the year honors in AA Competition.

Straight To State I'm a C-J Eagle and I'm proud . . . No matter what game we would be playing in, from Oakwood (our last game) to St. Vincent St. Mary (in the State Finals) this spirit showed through under the leadership of Coach Tom Tolle (never again to be referred to as "Coach Who? "). Mr. Tolle was a rookie coach so naturally we felt the responsibility to "break him in" . We soon found out that he didn't really need breaking in; he knew what he was doing. He gave totally of himself; picking us up whenever we were down, always ready with pep talks in crucial moments. Coach Tolle was an inspiration as he had that special quality of being more than just a coach ; he was a friend ; he was a champ. You can tell victories in statistics : Jane Meyers pitched 171 strikeouts; Our team batting average was .351 led by Teresa Pazitney who batted .626 vs. the batting average of the other teams -.144; Our season record was 18-4; We scored 230 runs vs . the 62 of the other teams; Jane pitched 3 no-hitters and 9 shut-outs; . .. But you can't tell the feeling of victory - the thrill, excitement, happiness, the high can't be expressed in figures . To feel like a champ is an experience that you have to go through and one that you'll never forget. Any good team needs unity - that is something that we never lacked. We developed a very special closeness; the closeness of a family . We went through hell together .. . and loved every minute of it. Our successful season wouldn't have been possible without the contributions of everyone on the team . We were made up qf a bunch of little stars which when working together made our team shine. The closeness we feit wasn't limited to just the team, it extended to the school, our families and many supporters. Eagle Spirit never dies - it just gets stronger. Out of 270 AAA teams in the State of Ohio, we came in 2nd. Could anyone possibly come out of a season like ours and feel sad? Yes , sorry to see it all end; wanting it to last; but knowing that those special moments will always be treasured . So how's it feel to be an Eagle? It feels like you're a winner. We've always felt like champs and in believing that you're the best, you become the best. We believed it then, and we believe it now.
Sue Fay

Men's Track Team Breaks The Tape
The Men's Track Team was found to be awesome in the 1978-79 season.
The Eagle squad got off to a slow start, but shot to the top. The team brought home the Bellbrook Invitationals. From there they went on to take the G.D.L. They placed 6th in the Dayton Relays and went on to win the Sectionals for the first time in CJ's history, and placed runner-up in the District.
C-J sent three men to the State: Steve Gemza, who placed 4th in the Discus; Chuck Bridgman, who placed 6th in the mile and two mile; and Roger Humphries, who placed 3rd in the Long Jump.
The following members received special recognition at the Springs Sports Banquet. Jim Green received the award for Best Sprinter. The Most Improved Runner award went to Mark Grothouse. Chuck Bridgman received the Best Distance Runner award. The Best Field Event Person award went to Steve Gemza.
Special thanks go to Coach Rick Hoffman for his t ime and dedication . The Eagles Track Team will look forward to an even better season for 1979-80.

Women's Track Covers A Lot Of Ground This season was unique for many of us. We had to adjust to a new coach; a task made easy by Miss Regan. She proved to be a most dedicated leader and was always there pushing, hoping, and covering a lot of miles herself.
The underclassmen really showed their stuff. Kim Adams won 1st place in the 100, and placed 2nd in the 220 at the State despite the rain. Our 440 Relay Team looked promising all year. Several members of the team were honored at the Spring Sports Banquet. Kim Adams received the Most Valuable Player award . The Most Valuable Field Event Person award went to Sheila McKe,e. Rita Geiger received the award for the Most Valuable Distance Runner. Molly O'Neill was awarded Most Improved Overall. Erin Haley received the Most Spirited award. The Seniors extend a big thank~you to our teammates and
, our coach and wis~ them all the luck in the next season.

1979 Netters Look Back With Pride
The 1979 Eagle Tennis Team is proud of its season. Though we were not satisfied with our 5-10 record, we can point with pride to the quality of our participation. The effort put forth, the experience gained, and the sportsmanship displayed are attributes of which this year's team can be justly proud. While our record fails to show it, the 1979 Eagle Netters have added much to the growing tradition of excellence in C-J sports.

For the students and faculty of C-J, the 78-79 school year was one of many changes. New faces and names became part of our community; many good times and a few sad times were had by all. It is my hope that "Transitions" is a sincere reflection of what this year has meant to each one of us. We all have come a little bit closer through the hours of work we put in, and created some good memories. This book would have not been possible without the tireless efforts of the entire staff, the lasting co-operation of Mrs. Pollack and Charlie Miller, and the help of numerous others throughout the year. Thanks to everyone!
