\\Education for adaption and change."
George Saville once said that"Education is what re~ mains when we have forgotten all that we have been taught:' His point being that education isn't about memorizing facts for a test, or doing page after page of homework in algebra, or knowing all of the ele~ ments of the periodic table for chemistry quizzes. An education for life is what sticks around after the test or exam. This can be a mixture of ideas, philosophies, and experiences, some of which may have come from a teacher, a fellow student, a stranger, or oneself. This is what a C~ J education is about, and the reason many different teaching styles are incorporated into classes such as videos, games, simulations, field trips, and speakers. Many teachers encourage students to come up with their own opinions, and respect opinions, even those contrary to their own. This makes a CJ education different from the average high school, and why C~ J students are so well prepared for college and life. Elbert Hubbard said, liThe object of teaching a child is to enable him to get along without a teacher:' This is exactly what the teachers aim towards for students at C~ J.

"It is important not to sleep while being taught otherwise you will miss out on what education is really about."
-Serena Allen
C-J is always noted and praised for the diversity in the halls. Unlike many other schools,
where diversity is a struggle, here it is a strength. Students come from many geographic regions, numerous different backgrounds and heritages. At the same time, we all do
have some similarities as well. One remarkable aspect of C-J is that both these similari
ties as well as differences are visible in the classrooms, clubs, and sports fields. It is all
about acknowledging both similarities and differences, and not focusing solely on one or the other that makes C-J stand out.

Carrying out the mission of St. Julie Billiart and B1. William Joseph Chaminade is to be an active
member of society, live life to the fullest and educate the whole person. A selected group of Chami~
nade-Julienne students chose to further their mission by going out into the world to reach out to
others. These students had the opportunity to see poverty, ftrst hand. They were able to be intro~
duced to a new culture, learn a new language, and become closer to God. Not only did this mission
trip consist of hard work and making new friends but it also brought us a new understanding of
other peoples' culture as well as their unique circumstances. Eyes were opened and love was present.
Our mission trips deftnitely provided an opportunity for us to grow closer to God!

Chaminade-Julienne offers a comprehensive retreat program led by peer
leaders trained by the Minisny & Service staff. Students have the opportunity
to participate in a progressive series of retreats beginning their Freshman year.
All freshmen attend an on-campus retreat in February titled Beyond Respect.
Sophomore year includes an off-campus retreat that is centered around the
theme of Thtst that is based on the writings of St. Julie & Blessed William
Joseph Chaminade. Juniors have the option of participating in one of five
two-day overnight retreats called The Journey which is based on the story of
the disciples meeting Jesus on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24: 13-34) Amanda Henne '07 leads her group in one of the fun team building activities on Junior Retreat.
Freshman Retreat includes lots of time for small groups to share their experiences with Respect for Self, Others and God. The annual retreat is held on campus and is led by selected members of the Junior class.

Swimming is all about building relationships inside and outside of the water. Swimming not only makes people want to strive to improve their speed in the water but to strive for excellence. Over this past year the Swim team took a team trip to the Knights Invitational while studying for exams, earned their first swimming trophy for winning the Shawnee Invitational, and placed third in the GeL. Twenty, three minutes and twenty' nine seconds were dropped from their very . "rst meet of the year and trained over 270,000 yards. Nine school records were broken and 482 lifetimes best perfor
ances were met. Swimming is all about meeting new people, having fun, meeting new goals and striving for the best.

C-J's KAIROS retreat, offered to seniors, is constantly talked about and yet is one of the best kept secrets. It is what all the underclassmen ask about and what all those who have gone on it rave about. Kairos is a difficult experience to explain and even more so to understand. So what is it? Its a chance for upperclassmen and teachers to truly bond on a deeper level and spend 4 days in "God's Time" at the Bergamo retreat center. It is, like any experience, what one makes of it. With openminded students, stereotypes and any preconceived ideas are completely thrown out the window, masks are removed, and respect and love overflow. Ask any KAIROS alumnvi and you can bet it was one of their most memorable C-J experiences.

that our graduates will be "service oriented" and 'contributing

extensive opportunities for students to learn first-hand what it
means to lead through service.

Lunch is a wonderful part of
the day when students can be loud and mingle without
getting yelled at by teach~ ers. These times in the day
are a necessity for C] stu~

sometimes stressful with the
incoming paperwork and the occasional demerits, Samantha
Budd '06 says that she loves it
because she can relax and talk

having to worry about class work. At lunch, there are so

Student Council is an organization at CJ that is responsible for many of the things that happen here. Within this organization are other groups such as the spirit committee and the social committee. They help to organize pep rallies and dances and do other things such as ice cream socials and candy grams, and they also head the blood drive. Student Council is also responsible for CJNN. They work to get highlights of our school and turn it into a show for the student body. It takes a lot of hard work but they are very dedicated. These are only some of the things that Student Council does for our school. Aside from all of these, they also do service at different sites outside of CJ. Student Council is very dedicated to making sure that the student body is happy and they always try to come up with new and inventive ways to get them involved .

PRINTMEDIA Final Issue M 31 2006
Print Media is responsible for our very own Eagle Examiner. Second period brings about interviews, picture-taking, and a lot of work for these students and this class. They work very hard all year long to produce great articles for the student body. An Eagle Examiner is only twenty-five cents to one dollar.
Print Media Class Seniors (I-r): Lauren Dunford, Alexa Lopez, Ellen Manovich & Nathan Pippenger
Who's in Charge: Mrs. Monica Fisher is
an excellent moderator for the Eagle Examiner. She works very hard with her students to produce the best newspaper they can. From highlights on the faculty and the students to human interest stories, she makes sure
that it gets done. Monica Fisher loves working on The newspaper and help
ing her students to excel in writing. She is doing a wonderful job as the school continuously looks forward to reading the Examiner.
Senior Kevin "The Turtle" Troidl, pondering the lead for his next story.
The members of Students of
Diversity work extremely hard every
year to recognize diversity in our school. They do this through plan~
ning the Valentine's Day Dance and
the Students of Diversity Assembly
and all with the help of Mrs. Cheryl
Smith. She has been dedicated to this
group for many years.
This wonderful group of students
truly shows what diversity means and
continues to keep the student body
aware of how wonderful and how
special our school really is.
Diversity C-J is a school known for its diversity. With assemblies like this one, we cel
ebrate our differences. The Students of Diversity members worked very hard
to put these acts together and create an outstanding petjormance.

W hen my English 11 students were reading The Color of Water, I thought about how exciting it would be if I
emailed the author, James McBride, and he, or even a secretary,
emailed me back a response to share with my students. I think
reading comes to life a lot more when the reader can learn more about the author and the author's background. In the case of this
book, which was based on the author's life, the author's back
ground was especially pertinent. I em ailed him and let him now
how much my students enjoyed the book and how many of them
could relate to his story. The last thing I expected was for him to
email back and say that he'd like to come and visit with the stu
dents in order to get more information on a music article be was
writing for National Geographic.
To say I was excited would be an understatement .. '! couldn't even
sleep the night before he was supposed to come. The time period
between when I emailed him and when he actually showed up at
C-J was only about a day and a hal£ In rhat time, we had to coor
dinate moving some classes and students around. The other teach
ers were so excited and were very accommodating, which made
the day even better. When he showed up, he was very friendly and
spoke to one class about the writing process and then interviewed
some students for his article in National Geographic. The students
got along well, and he liked visiting so much that he came back
about a month later to see the students again. I believe this says a
lot about C-J and how special we are. As a first-year teacher, this
was one of the most exciting things of the year. I am so glad the
students were able to have this experience.
