CONNECTIONGod Walks With Us Into the FutureRev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister

    Sunday, May 15Service of Blessing

Rev. Chris Shorows last Sundaywith us before Sabbatical Join us as we commission both his Sa

batical and our Renew process duringall 3 services.

And Experience ALittle Taste of Italy

from our coffee bar from 8:30 to 11and to help send off the

Shorow family in style between10 and 11 in Fellowship Hall.

This week has beena stressful time formy family and me.Trying to get all of the details arrangedfor a sabbatical

journey is noteasy. Dont get me

wrong, I dont mindall of the workit will be worth it. I simplysay that there is much to be done.

Meanwhile, I am wondering if I shouldpack at all. I just read a news article onthe end of the world. Apparently it willhappen on May 21, 2011. According toebiblefellowship.com, Creation took placeon 11,013 BC. With some careful figuring

of some biblical numbers, the flood was in4990 BC, and 1988 ended the church ageand the great tribulation period of 23 yearsstarted. Anyway, the bottom line is that May21st is Judgment Day and on October 21st,the world will be destroyed by fire.

I wonder if those who believe in suchpredictions have stopped making futureplans. Are they selling their houses and cars? How will that affect the rest of their lives? Formy part, Im going to assume that Im gettingon a plane on the 22nd. Well see whathappens.

Many times we as Christians try tohave all things figured out. We want tomake sure that God knows our plans andfollows through with them. The truth is,

A Time to Share, A Time to Talk, A Time to Celebrate All That Is GoBy Larry Ball, for the Renewal Task ForceBy now, youve probably heard, read andseen video about the Renew project takingplace in June here at FCCE. By now youknow that in June, we will be meeting at 9:15for Table Conversations and at 10:45 forunified worship. By now you know that thistime is being funded by the grant from theLily Endowment, that is also paying for Chrissabbatical.

Since you already know all that, I wantto take just a moment of your time to tell youabout what the experience will be like. Inearly April, a group of us met with a leaderfrom Phillips Theological Seminary and wereled through this process that he called ap-preciative inquiry. We sat at tables in smallgroups and were encouraged to share stories our stories. Stories about why we came toFirst Christian. Stories about where we hadseen God at work in the hearts and hands of the congregation.Stories about times whenwe had been especially touched by Godspresence at FCCE. We were entirely focusedon what we do best and how we can do itbetter. There was laughter, love and even

some tears of joy and thanksgiving. It wasa beautiful, positive and holy conversation.Everyone I talked to left that day excited, uplifted and renewed.

Now its the entire congregations turnto experience the joy we felt the excitementof renewal. FCCE is not a just a church itsa wonderful, caring, and imaginative groupof committed Christians that are doing the

work of God in our community. This time of renewal is about discerning what we do bestand finding ways to do those things evenbetter. As Robbi pointed out last week, its allabout accentuating the positive.

So, for the four Sundays in June, I urgeyou to come and experience renewal. Resistthe temptation to stay away from somethinga little different in your Sunday morningexperience. Come, and enjoy sharing andhearing the wonderful stories of FCCE. Weguarantee it will be stress-free and filled with

joy and celebration. Everyone has stories toshare and something to add.

Come in June and be renewed.

that in our faith, there are many questionsand mysteries out there. We cant knowthe future, and we certainly cant controlit. Thats what faith is abouttrusting ina loving God who walks with us on our

journeys in good times and bad. So evenif we dont know the future, we know who

walks with us in the futureand that makesall of the difference.

Im excited for the future of our church. As you enter into the Renewal Processduring my absence, we will be envisioning a

wonderful future for our church family. Wedont really know where that will take us,and that makes it a little scary. But the visionGod will provide will be wonderful. I lookforward to sharing with you upon my return, and hearing from you what has taken place.

Now, Im off to pack up some morestuffjust in case I get to go!
