Another highly successful conference took place in Bournemouth on the 23 – 25 February 2007. The theme ‘The Shape of Things to Come’ gave all delegates food for thought. Michael Johnson, BPIF Chief Executive, formally opened the conference Saturday morning and inspired delegates to challenge and question how things were carried out and emphasised the need to continuously look at ways to improve. Lorraine Foster, Account Controller at Cambridge University Press said ‘The opening of the training on Saturday, was hugely motivational, giving delegates the boost needed to understand the reason for being there. . It is important, while not to over do this, to make each delegate feel worthy of attendance. If you can appreciate your own worth, you can appreciate that of the person next to you; gaining respect for your peers from the offset’. A full days training followed, facilitated by Tim Wilkinson, BPIF Business Associate. The topic of the day was Customer Relationship Management we focused on the challenges facing us all in delivering and managing customer expectations. ‘As a non-YMP member myself, and attending my first National Conference, expectations for the weekend revolved solely around customer services training, as opposed to the YMP itself. I have to say that the training provided by Tim Wilkinson was very rewarding and it was most beneficial to speak to people from other printing firms not directly involved in a customer services role. The material supplied was relevant to all employees. It supported team work and gave people the opportunity to discuss problems, and hear the procedures other companies employ to rectify them. If that training was provided on site to other employees of CUP, I am not sure if it would have the same impact. The reason being, that honesty played a significant role in the team discussions and this was more forthcoming with people who are considered strangers before the event. To carry out that training with people from only one company would mean that everyone had the same experiences. There would be the chance to voice ideas but ultimately, if your experience is the same as everybody else it is likely that the ideas would have already been discussed. So again, discussing ideas and problems with people from other printing companies was rewarding. On the one hand you see that other companies do suffer similar problems, but you also see the ac- tions they adopt to tackle the problems.’ Lorraine Foster, Account Controller, Cambridge University Press. The Gala Awards Dinner gave the opportunity for further networking and was followed by the after dinner speaker Tony Burke, Assistant General Secretary of Amicus. Tony spoke on the role of the Union within the industry and the importance of the Partnership at Work Agreement, only by working together can we move forward and ensure we have an industry in the future. The Annual Awards were presented by Kevin Stallwood, YMP National Chairman. The Alden Management Challenge Bowl is awarded to the regional YMP group that has shown most endeavor in pursuing management development. This year the award was presented to the North West Region, the award was accepted by Mark Barlow, North West Regional YMP Chairman. The North West Region also won the W & G Baird Award, for enrolling the highest number of new members in the previous year. The final award of the evening was the Collins Quaich, which is awarded to an individual YMP who has made a major contribution to the YMP Organisation during the previous year, or consistently over a period of years. This was awarded to Sammie Dell-Ashby. YMP National Conference 2007 winter/spring 06/07 London, UK, 24January 2007: Held every 2 years, Northprint has cemented its reputation as the UK’s only mainstream print show. This year the show celebrates its 40th anniversary and has attracted the industry’s major equipment suppliers to Harrogate from 24-26th April. “Northprint is perfectly positioned between Ipex and Drupa and is on target to be, once again, the business show for people in the UK print business”, explains Event Manager Gordon Kirk. Now in its fourth year, the £500 cash prize will be awarded to the person who has made the most promising start to a career in the printing industry. Applicants must have joined a UK print related business within the last five years, and they are asked to submit a recent sample of their work, together with a short description of their training and personal development to date, showing how they have gained a high standard of competence over the early part of their career. This should be supported by comments from their employer. Mike Gee, managing director of award sponsors, Independent Paper said, “we are delighted to continue to support this important award, which recognises training excellence within the industry. As a major paper merchant we are very keen to show our long term support to the people who represent the future of the printing industry.” YMP National Chairman, Kevin Stallwood added, “Last year’s entries were impressive to say the least and it was great to see such enthusiasm from so many young people in the industry. I hope that employers in the industry will seize this opportunity to work closely with, and encourage, their new recruits - the next generation of print professionals.” For more details of the award, contact Sammie Dell-Ashby at BPIF Training: Tel: 01676 526040, or e-mail [email protected] 24-26th April 2007 – Harrogate Exhibition Centre The UK’s only dedicated, full spectrum print show celebrates 40th anniversary Chairman Writes YMP Contacts YMP North Eastern Region www.ymp.org.uk/northeast Jo Haigh - BPIF North Eastern Business Centre 142 Thornes Lane Wakefield WF2 7XG Tel. 01924 203330 Fax. 01924 290092 [email protected] YMP North Western Region www.ymp.org.uk/northwest Luke Das-Gupta - BPIF North Western 8 Floor Trafford House Chester Road Stretford Manchester M32 0RS Tel. 0161 886 8400 Fax. 0161 8774455 [email protected] YMP Midlands Region www.ymp.org.uk/midland Julie Page - BPIF Midland Business Centre 2 Villier’s Court Meriden Business Park Coventry CV5 9RN Tel. 01676 526030 Fax. 01676526033 [email protected] YMP Eastern Region www.ymp.org.uk/eastern Susan Johnson - BPIF Eastern Region Business Centre The Estate Office Kentford Lodge Herringswell Road Newmarket CB8 7PT Tel 01638 565180 Fax. 01638 751821 [email protected] YMP South Eastern Region www.ymp.org.uk/southeast Bob Davies - BPIF Farringdon Point 29-35 Farringdon Road London. Sunday morning started with Peter Vincent, BPIF Head ofTechnical Services. Peter spoke of the changes in technology and the latest machinery entering the industry and what the future may hold. Ruth Exelby, BPIF Head of BPIF Training, wrapped up the conference by challenging delegates to summarise their thoughts in the form of a heraldic shield – artistic license was taken to the extreme! The fi nal task of the conference was to award Andrew Denny with the prize for Best Delegate, which was sponsored by Danwood. An excellent conference and training event was enjoyed by all, even the sun came out for the weekend.

Special thanks must go to the conference sponsors, Lee James Graphic Equipment, The Flint Group, Blackpool Borough, Karawang, Glatfelter, Canon (UK) Ltd, DPI, Amicus the Union, Trafalgar Club, Saxon Recy-cling, HDP and Danwood.

YMP National Conference 2007 continued

“Planning Change” was the fi rst of 2 Workshops for 2007 held once again in the Directors Box at Blackpool Football Club. 16 delegates attended the Workshop on 7th March, which pro-vided a few hours of lively, interactive debate.

Delivered again by Hilary Wright, a local consultant with many years experience of working with organisations in both UK and Europe, this workshop was designed to show various tools for planning that relate directly to the ever-changing chaotic times in which we live and work.

The exercises that took place during the afternoon were based around forward planning for businesses. The fi rst of the 3 exercises was a Pestle Analysis, which looked at the possibilities of change within a number of key parameters over a period of time. These being Politically driven Agendas, Economical Targets, Social Change, Technological advancements, LegalImplications and Requirements and fi nally Environmentalimpact and change. The delegates where split into 3 groups and given 45 minutes to discuss what impact these could have on a business over a period of time.

The second task was to develop a transport plan for a day’sdelivery for two vehicles. Each team was given a map of the area, a brief, detailing journey and delivery times and 10 deliveries/collections to be planned for the day – the drivers could start at 8.00am but had to be fi nished by 5.00pm. During the tasks the teams where also given further scenarios, which would cause delays, therefore requiring re-planning for each of the vans schedules. Out of the three teams one team claimed to have both vehicles fi nished by 4.45pm – there is still adebate around whether or not this would be possible!

The fi nal exercise was an individual task based on GANTT charts and how to develop them. This was based on job planning and completion of tasks tocreate a simple time sequence for any project.

Overall the day was yet again enjoyable and full participation from all the delegates made for a fun afternoon. The next training will take place on Wed 16th May 2007 – Developing and Leading Highly Motivated Teams – we look forward to seeing you there.

CH CH CH CHANGES........... 7th March 2007 - Northwestern RegionThe graphic arts industry comprises many professionsincluding printing, paper, graphic designer and fountpublishing: all are dependant on each other for success, but sometimes fail to understand the others requirements. Typevents LLP was set up to help bring together the wider graphic arts sector, to assist in the sharing of knowledge and encouraging communication. Typevents does this by providing a comprehensive event, marketing and PR serviceto the graphic arts industries. Over the past 12 months Typevents has organised both large and small-scale events. Amongst the most popular was Plus - an international design expo presenting pioneering work by Birmingham’s leading graphic designers through a fi ve-day showcase in the heart of the city. Over 1800 visitors came to view the national and international work by the most infl uential design agencies in Birmingham, freelancers and rising stars.

Typevents runs regular walking tours that explore the typo-graphic complexions of a number of European cities including London, Birmingham and Rimini. The walks are a great way to see familiar cities from a new perspective and experienced guides who have both local knowledge and typographic understanding conduct the tours which last between one and two hours. The YMP CV

Rob HeighwayGraphic Designer - NB Colour Print Ltd, Lancashire.

Q. How did you become involved in the print industry?I completed an intensive design course at Runshaw college (Lancashire) and saw entering the print industry as an apprentice, the natural progression in my career as a graphic designer within this sector.

Q. What has been the most signifi cant change in your business in the last 2 years?I couldn’t really answer that question because i haven’t been working inthe business for two years. Haha! But then again it would probably haveto be the rapid changes in software development and also the installation of the two brand new 5 and 6 colour B2 litho presses here at NB Colour Print Ltd.

Q. What have been your best and worst moments working in the industry? There have been tons of great moments in my short spell within the industry so far, but probably one of the best moments was completing a really annoying rush job against all odds! Id have to say my worst moment was fi nding out that our company’s chief executive Ken Iddon M.B.E. had died while undergoing a minor operation earlier this year, this was a devastating blow and i am sure that this great man will be sorely missed by all.

Q. How long have you been a YMP member, and what do you like best about the YMP?I have only been a member of the YMP since the beginning of the year, and since then it has been a rollercoaster ride of joy and excitement! Id have to say that the best thing about the YMP are the organised events and it’s members. YMP events are without a doubt some of the best ive been to, extremely informative and the members are the nicest bunch of people that you could ever wish to meet!

Q. What other interests do you have other than YMP involvements?Im a real workaholic and i can often be found doing freelance design outside of work, but apart from that im quite a keen photographer and i also like music and socialising with friends (usually in the pub!).

Q. What would be your dream job?Probably being the creative director of my own design agency, or an F1 driver!?

Q. If you were stuck on a desert island and you could take onebook, one CD, and one item of food, what would they be?Ermmm the book would have to be all three “The Lord of The Rings”, The Ministryof Sound Chillout Sessions album and the food would most likely be a bar of“Turkish Delight”
