Hi! I have a friend in Hawaii. Her name is Jessica Yamamoto. We sometimes

talk on the Internet. She likes dancing the hula. It’s a traditional Hawaiian

dance. In fact, it’s more popular than any other dance in Hawaii. I want to

visit Jessica some day and learn how to dance the hula.

�動詞の目的語にくる動名詞She likes dancing the hula.「彼女はフラダンスを踊るのが好きだ」likeの目的語の位置に来ている dancingは、動名詞で、「踊ること」という意味です。動

名詞とは、動詞の原形に -ingがついたもので、「－すること」という意味で使われます。動名詞はその名の通り、動詞と名詞の２つの性質をあわせもっており、名詞と同じく、文の主語、補語、動詞や前置詞の目的語の位置に置かれます。今回は動詞の目的語の位置に来ている例に焦点を当てています。

形容詞の比較級を作るには、①形容詞に ---erをつける、②moreをつける、の２通りの方法があります。比較的長めの形容詞（３音節以上）は通例、moreをつけて比較級を作ります。

That’s whyの thatは、前の文の内容「ジェシカの先祖が沖縄から来ていること」を受けています。そして whyの前に reasonが省略されています。補って言うと、That’s the reason why she has a Japanese family nameとなります。つまり、ジェシカの先祖が沖縄から来ているという事実、それが、彼女の苗字が日本の苗字である理由なのです、という意味になります。通例 reasonは、省略され、That’s why--- という形で使われます。

�形容詞の最上級It’s one of the most famous dances in the world. 「それは、世界で最も有名なダンスの１つです。」形容詞の最上級をつくるには、①形容詞に、－ estをつける、②mostをつける、の２通りの方法があります。これで「もっともーな」という意味になります。通例、形容詞の最上級には theをつけます。比較的長めの形容詞（３音節以上）の場合は通例、mostをつけて最上級を作ります。最上級は、Lesson 1-2で学習した , 比較級 + than any other 単数名詞の形で書き換えることができます。
