LEARNING ABOUT SOCIO-ECONOMIC INEQUALITYCET Brazil students interact with locals from all socio-economic backgrounds, learning firsthand about their lives and challenges. They meet with leaders of grassroots social organizations that work to empower the disenfranchised—Passe Livre, a group that advocates for universal access to public transportation, or the Landless Rural Workers Movement, which has made world headlines with its call for land reforms.

BRAZIL’S AFRICAN HERITAGEThe program takes students on a weeklong traveling seminar to Salvador da Bahia, an entry port for

many of the country’s slaves. This northeastern city maintains its strong African cultural presence to this day, and it is here that students uncover the history, intricacies and social dynamics of Africa’s influence on contemporary Brazil.

GIVING BACK TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITYVolunteering allows students to understand their local community, while giving back to it at the same time. CET students may volunteer at organizations around São Paulo such as Arca do Saber (The Knowledge Ark), a center for at-risk children. They collaborate with staff, assist English language instructors, and take part in activities.

CET Brazil students share living space with a local roommate—university students selected by CET to participate in the program. Students and roommates quickly find friendship.

Together they discover where to get the best cheap eats, cheer for a favorite soccer team, or shop for a pair of havaianas (flip flops) before heading to the beach.

CET Brazil sets the stage for students to experience reality from a local perspective. The program motivates students to go where tourists don’t go, listen to those that are often ignored, and ask questions that probe below the surface. Discovering the real Brazil demands a heavy dose of curiosity and willingness to walk uncharted terrain.
