IL ETAIT UNE FOIS (ONCE UPON A TIME)A little background about Anne Salluzzo:-born Oct. 20, 1985-attended Hartwick College-In the fall of her junior year the opportunity presented

itself for her to study abroad in Paris, France through the Central College Program.

-Her mother gave her a small piece of advice from her own personal study abroad experience in France, “c’est l’experience qui compte,” or “it is the experience that counts.” What her mother said kind of stuck with her.

WHAT’S THE MISSION?The mission of the Anne Salluzzo Collection of Paris, France is to document the study abroad experiences of Anne Salluzzo for her own personal use. The materials entrusted to the archive will be protected from potential external dangers. It will also serve as a means of preserving the memory of the time spent abroad by Anne Salluzzo even beyond the life of its creator in hopes of encouraging others much as Anne Salluzzo was to take advantage of such opportunities.

DECISIONSMaterials for this collection were limited

based on the following dilemmas:

What Anne Salluzzo could fit into her luggage upon her return to the United States. There were materials such as documents, periodicals, and other personal items that were left behind in Paris, France.

It was decided early on in the collection project that the materials would focus on Paris, France rather than all the sites she was able to see in the semester.

AREAS OF GROWTHAnne Salluzzo returned from

studying abroad in late December 2006, and there is no anticipated growth in the collection. However, the collection only has items that belong to Anne Salluzzo. One way the collection might expand is by the inclusion of other items such as trinkets, postcards, journals, magazines, etc. The addition of personal accounts would be an invaluable addition to the collection.

VALUE ASSESSMENT The collection is of primarily

sentimental value to Anne Salluzzo Interested parties might include:

-Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY-Central College, Pella, IA-the study abroad offices at Hartwick College and Central College-Individuals or Groups interested in study abroad experiences of college students in Paris, France.

Taking photographs played an important role in documenting her experiences while studying abroad in Paris, France. The photographs chosen represent the variety of experiences that Anne Salluzzo had the opportunity to take part in during her time overseas.

Fontainebleau 11-02-2006 (Box 1, File 9)This photograph represents the sheer awe that Anne Salluzzo felt upon arriving at the castle after reading and learning about its history in her studies. Anne Salluzzo had previously tried to visit the castle but on previous occasions the castle was closed or the staff was on strike. The photograph of Fontainebleau and other sites that Anne Salluzzo took photographs of allows people looking at the collection that were not present in France with her to share in her experiences.

The main focus of Anne Salluzzo’s time spent in Paris, France was to continue her studies in French language and culture. The collection seeks to highlight the educational experiences Anne Salluzzo had during her time at the Institut de Touraine and Institute Catholique.

The classes offered her many opportunities such as having her art history class meet at the Louvre Museum. She also was given the opportunity to present her research at the Louvre Museum at an event especially designed for students.

As a student in the Central College Study Abroad Program, Anne Salluzzo was encouraged to visit and explore the many things Paris, France had to offer. This series is reflective of the materials Anne Salluzzo used to gain access to these sites.

This object is reflective of materials Anne Salluzzo used to gain access to the many sites that Paris, France has to offer visitors. As a student of an art history class at the Institute Catholique, Anne Salluzzo was granted free admission to the Louvre Museum. She would present the card upon arriving at the museum.

CONSERVATIONThings to watch for on the materials within

and planned for inclusion in the collection: Brittle paper Discoloration Mold Pest damage Odor Soil Stains Tears

CURRENT CONDITIONS Collection housed in Johnstown, NY, at

the foothills of the Adirondack Moutains. Old home with poor insulation, potential

rodents and leaky roof. The home has fire detectors, but no

sprinklers. The home has central air conditioning. Collection stored in archival qualities

boxes in a closet. Family members unaware of

preservation practices.

IDEAL CONDITIONS Ideal temperature for such a collection

would be between sixty-eight and seventy degrees Fahrenheit with a relative humidity of forty-five percent.

Control the humidity. The box in which the collection is housed

should be of archival quality and be in a flame resistance repository such as a filing cabinet.

Sprinklers should also be installed in the home.

the collection should never be located in the attic.

DISASTER PLANShould a disaster or emergency occur, an effort will be made by the family to take the collection with them if it possible. A digital copy of the collection will be stored in the apartment of Anne Salluzzo 100 miles away from the current location of the collection. If materials are able to be saved work to repair and preserve the materials will be outsourced immediately. The family will have been informed how to do basic conservation such as drying techniques in the event of water damage to prevent further damage before more extensive conservation occurs. Every two years the disaster contingency plan should be reevaluated.

SECURITY Privacy is a big deal! Visitors are expected to use special

gloves when handling materials. Representative of collection needs to be

present when visitor is viewing the collection.

Personal Items need to be kept in the visitors vehicle.

Location of collection is a private residence and an accounting practice, in order to coexist, certain rooms will be off limits.

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT CONTINUED-Reaching out to the Hartwick College

and Central College study abroad offices.

-In the future there is potential for adding the following record groups:Pre-Departure, Post-Paris Life and European Excursions.

-Materials coming into the collection will come by financial transaction.

-Materials entering will come by means of transfer of title, bequest or gift.

-Priority in further acquisitions will be given to obtaining personal accounts from Anne Salluzzo such as correspondence and journals.
