2017 Business Opportunity Conference & Expo
Special Welcome
Dear 2017 GNEMSDC Expo Attendees :
The GNEMSDC Business Opportunity Conference and Expo is again the seminal event on our annual calendar. The GNEMSDC Board of Directors, administrative leadership and staff are extremely grateful for your kind participation and attendance as well as the support of the Gillette Stadium team in this undertaking.
The theme of this year’s Conference and Expo is “Fueling Economic Growth for Minority Business Development.” In this regard, we will facilitate two panels:
1) the use by MBEs of “Inorganic Growth” strategies (also known as mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic partnerships) to minimize the time period required to achieve the scale critically necessary to meet the needs of corporate partners – this panel will feature MBEs who have implemented these strategies, the examination of the thought process of an MBE who is actively exploring inorganic pathways to growth, and sharing of perspectives of some professionals required to consummate these transactions; and
2) a joint corporate and MBE panel featuring “Best Practices” and “Success Stories” in connection with significant minority business development. In addition, we will feature the usual Match Maker session with a slightly modified approach in which our matching software will be used to pre-screen and thereby enhance the opportunity to make substantive connections between MBE suppliers and corporate buyers for the purchase of goods and services. The highpoint of this event is our Expo, which provides corporations and MBEs with an opportunity to showcase their products and services, as well as a platform for smaller MBEs to sell to larger MBEs. The highlight of the Conference and Expo will be a keynote address by Quincy Miller, the President of Eastern Bank.
Eastern Bank, through its creation and leadership of the “Business Equity Initiative” (the “BEI”), is truly a catalyst and innovator in the areas of economic inclusion and minority business development. Through the BEI, Eastern Bank is funding the provision of strategic advisory services to ten MBEs, and seven of them are certified by GNEMSDC. And GNEMSDC is honored to serve as one of the strategic advisors. Eastern Bank has also created a growth capital fund that will be a source of equity and/or mezzanine capital that is sorely needed by many MBEs. Further, Eastern Bank and the Boston Chamber of Commerce are jointly leading the “Pacesetter” initiative where other corporations will be asked to join Eastern and the Chamber in agreeing to increase their spend with MBEs and to disclose that increased spend. GNEMSDC’s central role will be to find MBEs who can meet the needs of the participating corporations.
We conclude with the Shining Star reception. Our honorees this year have made numerous contributions to GNEMSDC and include: Glynn Lloyd, of Eastern Bank, and Bill Witcher of Minuteman Trucks.
We anticipate the 2017 GNEMSDC Expo’s success because of the continued support and engagement of our Board of Directors, and the heroic leadership of the Chairman of the Board, Tom Davis of Cartus. GNEMSDC also is grateful for the financial support of our Annual Sponsors and our Expo Sponsors. Their support provides GNEMSDC with the financial resources to produce the Expo and to serve GNEMSDC’s stakeholders. I also want to thank our volunteers and the GNEMSDC staff for their hard work and dedication to our mission in addition to the planning committee, panelists, speakers and moderators for providing all of us with their knowledge, experience and insights.
Best,
Peter F. Hurst, Jr.

2017 Business Opportunity Conference & Expo
Our Business Conference and Expo is an opportunity for renewed focus on making new connections and building on old relationships. The energy emanates during exhibit set-up and builds throughout the day. This year promises to transform that energy into opportunity, even more than last year.
None of the success of the event occurs without the thoughtful planning and tireless organization of many individuals.
I would like to express my appreciation to the sponsors, attending MBEs and corporations and, of course, the GNEMSDC staff and MBEIC for the work they’ve done to make this year’s Expo a success. They have invested many, many hours executing the plan and checking every detail.
The leadership and support of our president, Peter Hurst, are keys to bringing new ideas to life and enhancing winning concepts from the past.
I invite you to enjoy the Expo and be determined to leave with new business prospects.

CREATING VALUE FOR CERTIFIED MBESIn a hypercompetitive marketplace, certifying your business with GNEMSDC provides you with valuable resources to help your business grow and succeed. Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) benefit from private events and programs where you can learn about state and local opportunities, expand your professional network and meet with corporate buyers who are interested in working with qualified MBEs. Your GNEMSDC certification is honored nationwide and recognized by major U.S. corporations, public agencies and non-profit organizations.
COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS CERTIFICATIONThe Commonwealth of Massachusetts recently chose GNEMSDC as the certifying entity for MBEs. An MBE that is certified by GNEMSDC will no longer be required to complete the Commonwealth’s MBE Certification application. As a result, qualified MBEs will receive a dual certification from GNEMSDC and the Commonwealth. For details, please contact Denise Massingale-Lamb at [email protected] or call 203-288-9744.
CREATING VALUE FOR CORPORATE MEMBERSIn today’s global marketplace, supplier diversity is a business necessity and a tool to improve the economy. Criminal Justice MentoringTHROUGH THE TIERED COMMUNITY MENTORING PROGRAM
UPDATES AND NEWS
» Teaming practicing attorneys of color with diverse students in high school, college, and law school, the Tiered Community Mentoring Program, made possible through the Mass Bar Association, seeks to offer guidance and resources for students to make informed decisions regard-ing their futures and careers. The collaboration between the Bar Association and local schools and universities was implemented in order to give inner-city students an opportunity to learn about the legal field through hands-on experiences. “For anyone interested in law, it is a great start,” says Kerby Forges, who graduated from RCC in May and will begin studying law at UMass Boston this Fall. Forges credits the program with providing RCC students with resources regarding the law school admission process and an inside view of the practice of law through their attorney mentors. As a member, he recalls sitting in on the appeal for a criminal case, shadowing attorneys in the court room, and touring the State House and the Senate Chambers as well, all experi-ences he might not have had if not for RCC and Mass Bar. RCC has participated in the program since its inception in 2009, providing our Criminal Justice students like Forges with access to legal professionals who can help to educate them on many of the career opportunities available to them. The program’s focus on building a diverse mentor-ing network for its participants provides students with a
comfortable atmosphere to cultivate relationships with successful criminal justice professionals. “Our student’s first contact with a judge shouldn’t be as a defendant,” says Professor Nunotte Zama, one of the program’s academic advisors at RCC. Through the Tiered Community Mentoring Program, students have had the opportunity to sit in on real cases and interact with immigration attorneys, the Governor’s legal counsel, FBI, ATF, Superior Court Judges, and CORI professionals, among other professionals. Alumni of the program at RCC have gone on to study law at Northeastern University, Newbury College, and other institutions.

RCC ATHLETICS UPDATE» For athletes at RCC, the educational experiences in the class-room are complemented by those in athletics that promote discipline, teamwork, leadership, and good sportsmanship.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALLThis season was tremendous for the Lady Tigers, who became the 2017 Regional Champions after defeating the Gateway Lions. Players Ana Marcelin and Gianni “Gigi” Hill were both named to the Regional All-Tournament Team, and Gigi was named Tournament MVP. After securing the region-al championship, the Lady Tigers finished their season second in the nation, at the 2017 NJCAA DIII National Championship Tournament. Ana Marcelin and Gigi Hill were again named to the All-Tournament Team.
MEN’S BASKETBALLThe RCC Tigers powered through a rebuilding season, which ended in February 2017.
Freshman guard Laurence Chery ranked #7 in the conference in scor-ing, averaging 18.2 points per game, and was ranked #6 in the conference in assists, aver-aging 4.9 assists per game. Jared Mosley averaged 6.4 points per game and 8 rebounds per game. Jabril Hassan showed improvement throughout the year, and we expect to see him contribute more next season. Pedro Ramos is one of the rare two-sport student-ath-letes — he also plays soccer for RCC.Freshman Guard Imer Ortiz, who led the conference in scoring with 22.6 points per game, was also named a 2016-2017 NJCAA Region 21 All-Star.
TRACK AND FIELD The RCC Track and Field teams were also strong competitors this year. RCC’s Track and Field teams were incredibly successful during the sea-son and at nationals! During the season, Andriana Higgins was ranked
first in the 100-meter hurdles, sixth in the 100-meters and sixth in the 400-meter hurdles. At nationals, Adriana won the 100-meter hurdles (breaking the national record in the process) and the 400-meter hurdles. During the regular season, Brian Donna was ranked second in 400-meter hurdles and javelin, and third in the 110-meter hurdles and pole vault. He also ranked sixth in the high jump and 10th in the long jump. Brian won the 400-meters at nationals. Ed Barretto was ranked
sixth in the 400-meter and 13th in the 200-meter. At nationals, Ed finished eighth in the 100-meter dash. Congratulations on a successful academic and athletic year to these students and their supporters. For additional athletics cover-age, please visit our website or follow us via social media.

THE NEW ROXBURYCOMMUNITY COLLEGECOMING IN FALL 2017» In April 2016, Roxbury Community College formally cel-
ebrated the start of our $72.5 million campus construction
project, funded by the Division of Capital Asset Manage-ment and Maintenance (DCAMM). Our renovations started
in August 2016 and will end in Summer 2018, with many of
our renovated buildings re-opening in Fall 2017! The reno-vations planned for our campus will address the infrastruc-
ture updates required for the College's long-term success.
The Renewable Energy Project — Now CompleteOn Friday, April 28, 2017, Roxbury Community College hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to formally celebrate the completion of our Renewable Energy Project, which commenced in August 2016. The Renewable Energy Proj-ect includes 115 geothermal wells, 500 feet deep beneath parking lot #1, to function as a heating and cooling source. On the surface, there is parking for 320 cars, in addition to electric charging stations for up to six cars. Above the lot, there is a solar canopy with approximately 3,000 solar panels representing nearly a megawatt of power. Additionally, there is efficient LED lighting under the PV canopy deck to help increase security for students.
The Renewable Energy Project is part of the larger $20.1 million Energy Savings Performance Project, which comprises 23 energy conservation measures, in-cluding campus-wide interior and exterior LED lighting enhancement and a complete upgrade of the College’s Energy Management System. The project is expected to save RCC approximately $860,000 annually.
Special thanks To DCAMM and Ameresco for their outstanding work on this project.
Thanks to DCAMM, NBBJ and the W.T. Rich Company for their continued excellence in overseeing our campus renovations.
Government officials, community members, faculty, staff, and
students joined the RCC administration to formally celebrate the
completion of the Renewable Energy Project on April 28, 2017.
Students in RCC’s nursing program receive hands-on instruction using simulation equipment purchased with the Massachusetts Skill Capital
Grant, awarded by the Baker Administration. This top-of-the-line equipment will be moved to the new Allied Health Suite and augmented by
addtional new simulation equipment.
Opening in Sept. 2017 — RCC’s Allied Health SuiteOur Allied Health programs have always been a source of pride for RCC. Beginning in September 2017, all of our Allied Health programs, both credit-granting and non-cred-
it, will have a home that’s reflective of their long-standing
academic excellence. The new Allied Health Suite in Building #4 includes three fully-equipped simulation rooms for maternity, trauma, and general care. The suite also includes a surgical technician operating room, a radiology lab, a full nursing skills lab with seven bays, a CNA training room, a phlebotomy training room, a new lecture hall, the CVS Pharmacy Training Center,
a student lounge, and a nursing meeting room.
“ RCC’s Nursing Program is excited to move into our new space for fall 2017! We will have a state-of-the-art simulated hospital which includes: a labor & delivery suite, pediatric & adult patient rooms, OR, trauma room, radiology, exam room, general simulation and skills room. RCC nursing will also have a new classroom, computer lab,
and lounge! Our current students say ‘please give us more simulations’ and moving forward we will be able to do that and

Minuteman Ford Truck Sales (MFTS) was incorporated on October 10, 1990 and today is equally owned by brothers William and Richard Witcher. At the time of its incorporation, MFTS was a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company and included in the Ford Motor Company Dealer Development Program. The Dealer Development Program originated to give under-capitalized and minority origin candidates an opportunity to completely acquire and own an automotive dealership business. At the completion of the acquisition process the dealership is no longer part of Ford Motor Company and becomes a stand alone business entirely owned by the acquiring candidates.
Now Minuteman Trucks, based in Walpole, Massachusetts, continues operating as a private Capital Company equally owned by both brothers. The business employs approximately 100 people; sells approximately 450 commercial trucks and 21 million dollars of parts and service repairs per year. In addition, the brothers are invested in the dealership’s real estate and other related business, like truck leasing and renting.
The Minuteman mission is to:
• be America’s best run, most profitable commercial, fire and rescue truck retailer; be the best in the eyes of our customers and employees;
• become the most progressive dealer; one who strives to pro-actively and aggressively incorporate operational improvements and organizational cohesion, efficiency and customer responsiveness;
• provide commercial and rescue owners with vehicle products and knowledge which fulfill their wants and needs at the right price; and
• problem solve, educate and inspire our customers with helpful, friendly knowledgeable and professional staff.

Shining Star
Glynn Lloyd has been a pioneer in the field of transformative urban economic development for over 25 years. He is the President and Founder of City Fresh Foods and is currently the Executive Director of the Business Equity Initiative (BEI), a new Initiative originating out of the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation. BEI is focused on growing enterprises of color and catalyzing community transformative development as means of addressing wealth and income disparities in Eastern MA.
In 1990, after graduating from Boston University, he became one of the inaugural members of Teach for America, teaching 5th grade in Louisiana. Upon returning to Boston, he decided to pursue an innovative approach to community economic development by creating community owned and operated enterprises. Glynn founded City Fresh Foods Inc., a nationally-renowned food service business, and over 20 years grew it on average 15% annually to $9M in revenue.
City Fresh Foods pioneers ethnic meals to homebound elders and healthier meals to school age children, and was one of the first companies to receive Social Venture Capital, eventually returning a healthy multiple to its investors. Under Glynn’s leadership, City Fresh raised hundreds of thousands of investment capital, twice expanded its production capability to larger facilities, practiced open book management, and introduced fresh local ingredients from area farms into its supply chain.
Glynn played a pioneering role in the local foods systems movement by catalyzing Article 89, a recently passed Boston zoning law amendment that allows urban farmers to grow for the market as a right. To help institutionalize these practices, Glynn founded the Urban Farming institute, a community-led nonprofit supporting the development of the new urban farming industry in Massachusetts.
Glynn has extensive experience assisting some of region’s prominent nonprofits, including the transition of Commonwealth Kitchen to new leadership. Additionally, he continues to counsel many incubator businesses in the Commonwealth Kitchen on their capital and growth strategies, while also advising the leadership of their value-added commissary strategy. As previous board chair of Sportsmen’s Tennis Club, Glynn assisted in the transition of leadership at both the board and management level, at a critical time of this African-American led community institution’s life cycle. He was also selected and appointed by Governor Deval Patrick to serve as a Trustee for Roxbury Community College, as part of the college’s pivot into its best possible future. Most recently, he helped found the Black Economic Council of Massachusetts, a coalition of black business, community, religious and labor leaders working together to improve economic indicators in the Black community.
Glynn currently resides in Roxbury with his partner Sara and two daughters Grace and Ayana.

GNEMSDC is pleased to announce our partnership with the Eastern Bank Business Equity Initiative (BEI).
The BEI was launched in July with participation from 10 MBEs and with support from GNEMSDC in the role of strategic advisor for two of those companies. Seven of the 10 MBEs selected by Eastern Bank to receive advisory services are GNEMSDC certified companies.
Other elements of the BEI include the establishment of a growth capital fund, and of the Pacesetter Initiative which will seek to increase spending by corporate members of the Boston Chamber of Commerce with diverse businesses.
The BEI was developed to help accelerate the growth of local enterprises of color and to directly impact the increase of job opportunities and wealth creation in the neighborhoods of Greater Boston. BEI is initially focusing on Black and Latino businesses because that is where the wealth disparity is greatest.
Critical to the success of the BEI is to ensure that all of the qualified Black and Latino owned businesses in Eastern Massachusetts are aware of this unique opportunity.
