A WORLDOF

OPPORTUNITYIf you were to sit in a classroom at Century College, you may be amazed at what you would find. You may know Century as a place where students come from all walks of life to empower themselves through education, whether they are adult learners returning to school for a second career, local high school students taking advantage of the Post-Secondary Enrollment Option or transfer students taking general education credits for a four-year degree.

But what you may find surprising is that Century attracts students from across the United States and all over the world. Century is one of the most diverse colleges in Minnesota, providing students with an enriched educational experience and preparing them for achanging workforce.

Multicultural Lessons At Century College, students are represented by 44 countries and 43 US states, from California to Costa Rica to Ethiopia to the Ukraine, and the Multicultural Center is a hub of activity where students gather together.

“Century’s Multicultural Center is like travelling around the world while standing in one place – students come to network, connect with peers, and work on school projects,” said Herbert King, Multicultural Center Director. “The reason why the Multicultural Center is transformative is that it makes the student experience more enriching. Students build relationships on their curiosity about each other.”

Hannah, a Century student from Gibbon, Minnesota, agrees, “I’ve met people from all different cultures. We learn about other worldviews at Century – and the cultural celebrations down in the Nest (student center) are fun!”

For other students, such as Anthony, Century’s many educational and

cultural activities were a delightful surprise and an opportunity for personal growth. “It’s my first semester, and it’s been fun. I thought community colleges were just about taking classes and then going home. I’ve been surprised by the variety of student activities on campus.”

Preparation for the Workplace According to a 2010 Rand study for the U.S. Department of Labor, economic globalization will be more extensive than ever before, and workplaces will continue to grow in racial and ethnic diversity. Students exposed to a real-world environment early on in their careers will be better able to negotiate and stand out in a new work setting.

Cristiano Mazzei, a Century faculty member from Brazil, teaches in the Translating and Interpreting (TRIN) program. He understands the need to educate students on the value of understanding and embracing cultural differences, especially in the workplace. “Our students know that our communities are changing. The world is shrinking, and we’re becoming a global economy. Students who are prepared for that reality will excel in their careers.”

In addition, Mazzei feels that preparing students for the new work-place enhances their critical thinking skills. “You’ll be better able to compete if you have sharpened your ability to problem solve and think critically, as well as relate to people outside your social circle.”

Recent graduate and Century’s Exemplary Student award recipient for 2011-12, Toby Lillibridge from White Bear Lake, feels that his experiences at Century have prepared him well for the workplace. “I pushed myself to get involved because I know employers are looking for people with wide-ranging experience who can work with all kinds of people in all kinds of situations.”

Jose Campos PaniaguaMusic brought Jose Campos Paniagua to Century a few years ago when his high school band played a concert on campus. When it was time to think about college, Jose remembered his visit to Century. He’s currently majoring in Computer Science, and finds his experiences have been even better than he expected. “It’s easy to get to know people—and it’s easy to get involved in student activities,” he says.

Pa Ku PhuPa Ku Phu is a Century Student Ambassador. Getting involved in student activities such as Spanish Club and the Planning Activities Committee was her key to a successful start at Century. This future dental hygienist likes serving as a role model to improve herself and to help others. “You must seek out opportunities and get involved,” she says.

Toby LillibridgeToby Lillibridge was Century’s Exemplary Student for 2011-12. An Information and Telecommunications Technologies graduate, Toby spoke at the Spring 2012 commencement ceremony. “Century has so many opportunities for people to branch out from their major and meet people from all over the world who are doing some really interesting things,” he says.

Noemi Ramos SaicoPre-Nursing student Noemi Ramos Saico, likes the wide variety of student clubs and activities on campus. “There are many opportunities to interact with people and to meet new friends,” she says. Century’s diverse student population also makes her feel welcome on campus, knowing she’s one of many international students.

Business

Juan Vazquez, business owner and consultant, knows what it’s like to be in charge of his own destiny. After graduating from Century with an Associate in Arts degree in 1999, he transferred to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and received a degree in Business Administration. Juan took his education and training, and focused on the emerging Hispanic market. “The beauty of education is that you get a degree but it doesn’t dictate what you do—it’s a stepping stone to doing what you want to do,” Juan says. “I wanted to do something I really enjoyed.” This busy entrepreneur now owns two businesses, Intelvision, a Hispanic marketing company, and Lacochera (“the garage”), a rapidly-expanding Spanish-language website for those who want to buy and sell cars. “When you have teachers and mentors who have faith in you, you then have a greater responsibility to carry that faith forward. Century was the place where I learned to believe in myself.”

Rosemary Merrill, president and co-owner of Casa Verde Designs in Minneapolis has always looked at houses and seen the possibilities. While redesigning her own kitchen, her enthusiasm and renewed energy gave her the impetus to change her career.

Ten years ago, Rosemary came to Century College as an adult learner, joining the Kitchen and Bath Design program in its first year. The one-year program suited her career goals perfectly, and the classes were conveniently located in International Market Square in downtown Minneapolis. Juggling work, studies, and family responsibilities wasn’t easy, but Rosemary’s gamble paid off. Century’s program helped open doors . “You need credentials, and you need to belong to professional associations.” she says. “Century’s Kitchen and Bath Design program made it all come to life.” Fast forward a decade and this multi award- winning designer and business owner now supports local artists and sustainable designers in her work. She also supports Century’s design students by offering tours of her studio, as well as serving on Century’s Advisory Committee for the Kitchen and Bath Design program.
