QUIÉNES SOMOSABOUT US

CARLOS MADRIDDIRECTOR

In this month of May we will wrap-up the summer training cycle of the teachers of the Department of Education of the Philippines, who have been perfecting their Spanish with us, as part of the existing training program in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID) and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain. The hard work of these teachers will result in a language instruction that is even more versatile and eloquent. Thank you all for your efforts!

Those of you who want to take it easy after the DELE exams this May, and want to read in our library, can take note that this year we commemorate the 75th Death Anniversary of the poet Miguel Hernández. This has a very special significance to our center since our library carries his name. If you manage to get one of his books at the Pop-up Library at the Ayala Triangle Gardens, don’t forget to leave another book in exchange, which is the idea behind the Book Stop Project initiative of the WTA Architecture and Design Studio.

The El Prado en la calle exhibit, which was brought to the Philippines by the Embassy of Spain, will be on display in Makati until May 22 and then in Intramuros starting June 9. A one-of-a-kind opportunity to delight in the masterpieces of the Flemish, Italian, and Spanish masters, and among them, a hardly known painting of Juan Luna.

If you enjoy live music, you will have another meeting point at this year’s Silent Film Festival of Manila. Music, exhibits, literature and film await you at the Instituto Cervantes de Manila. See you!

El Museo del Prado en Filipinas is an exhibit aimed at acquainting the Filipinos with Spain's national museum and the art treasures in its safekeeping by offering 53 life-size high-definition photographic reproductions of artworks of some of the great masters, giving the locals the full experience of viewing these masterpieces almost as if they were at The Prado Museum. The sheer scale of these replicas to be displayed on the streets provides details of each work of art that will surely kindle the interest of passers-by. A Filipino touch is added to this Philippine edition of the travelling project El Museo del Prado en las calles. In celebration of the 160th birth anniversary of Juan Luna, the exhibit features his Cleopatra, which garnered the silver medal in the 1881 Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Exposition of Fine Arts) in Madrid and has since then been under the guardianship of The Prado along with other works of his. Unbeknown to most of us, The Prado is the custodian of several artworks of another local artist, Felix Resurrección Hidalgo, as well as those of lesser-known but equally talented Filipino painters, most of whom took part in the Exposición General de las Islas Filipinas held in 1887 at the Palacio Cristal in Madrid whose goal was to illustrate the way of life of Philippine society in all its aspects so that the exhibited artworks represented the culture, technology, development, the arts and history of the Filipino people. The Philippines is the last stop of the travelling project El Museo del Prado en las calles which already made the rounds of important cities around the world.

Posporo(s) is a musical project under the framework of cultural cooperation between Spain and the Philippines. The key players of Posporo(s) are the independent music scene of both countries, represented by Spanish bands and the same number of Philippine bands, with different styles and artistic approaches but are all an indication of what is happening in the contemporary music scene in Spain and the Philippines despite a 12,000 km-distance separating the two countries. The main objective is to facilitate the exchange and meeting between Spanish and Filipino musicians on stage and promote alternative Spanish music and introduce to Spanish media and audience some of the most intriguing Philippine bands.

Presented by Instituto Cervantes and the Embassy of Spain, in cooperation with the Office of Senator Angara, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), NCCA, and Local government units of Baler, Province of Aurora.

By virtue of the Republic Act No. 9187, which was initiated by Senator Edgardo Angara, the Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day was established on July 22, 2002. It commerates the strong links between the Philippines and Spain. Since 2003, it is celebrated every June 30, commemorating the date of 1899 when Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, then president of the Malolos Republic, issued a decree to treat as friends the last Spanish soldiers who had resisted inside the Baler’s church for almost one year, and that they be provided all the necessary assistance for their return to Spain.

Today, it is the symbol of the friendship between both countries.

On April 26, 1937, the German aviation bombarded the Basque town of Guernica. Moved by the tragic event that caused many civilian casualties, Picasso, who had been commissioned by the government of the Republic to produce a painting for the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 Paris International Exposition, decided to name his work after the Basque town. A masterpiece of 20th century painting, Guernica was shown for the first time to the public on July 12, 1937.

In the wake of the 80th anniversary of the event, this cycle aims to offer a cinematic vision of the turbulent Spain of that decade.
