We at Career Development Services believethat in order to be successful in careerplanning, students must invest in their owncareer development. Our role is to preparestudents to manage a lifetime of careerdecisions. We achieve this by offeringexperiential learning opportunities andworkplace educational programming such as:

• EXCEL Program (Experiences ChallengingEmerging Leaders)

• PREP Program (Practical Resources for Employment Preparation)

• V.I.P. (Volunteer Internship Program)

EXCEL is a new leadership program createdthrough the Volunteer Internship Program(V.I.P.) which allows students to take part in acommunity service project and enhance theirleadership skills within a group. EXCEL is ayear-long program.

EXCEL student benefits

Students will have the opportunity to gain:

• Knowledge that can be applied to theirfuture career

• Recognition on their academic transcript

• A Certificate of Achievement

This integrated program provides a team-based, experiential learning opportunity forstudents. Students can expect to developtheir:

• Leadership skills

• Project planning skills

• Time management skills

• Communication skills

How does it work?

Students are assigned to groups of four andare placed with a non-profit or not-for-profitagency to complete a large project over thecourse of two semesters. Teams will managethe project with the assistance of an on-sitesupervisor and a Campus Co-ordinator. Teamswill be asked to develop a plan of action andhave regular progress meetings and submitregular progress reports.

Fees

There is a $50 administrative fee charged forthe program. Funds will be used for materialsand supplies.

PRACTICAL RESOURCES FOREMPLOYMENT PREPARATION (PREP)

The PREP program is a series of 20 workplace-related workshops which provideundergraduate students with the opportunityto obtain the applied professional skillsneeded to make a successful transition from academic studies to the workforce.

Participating students will be required tocomplete 12 of the 20 units offered over the course of two years to obtain the PREPProgram Certificate.

The PREP Program is useful for all students,but will be especially beneficial to second-and third-year students currently enrolled in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences.

PREP student benefits

• Development of a meaningful connectionbetween academic major and work(career) experiences

• Enhanced awareness, employment skills,competencies and perspectives

• Improved career preparation andprofessional development, leading to arecognition of future opportunities andenhanced job search strategies.

• Ability to effectively life-plan and makedecisions with respect to practical issuesincluding career development, post-graduate studies, financial planning and community involvement

• Certificate upon completion of 12 units for your portfolio.

Fees

A one-time fee of $120 is applied andincludes all 20 units of instruction andactivities, class notes and materials, aportfolio gift, and the PREP ProgramCertificate.

The Volunteer Internship Program (V.I.P.) wasthe first program of its kind in Canada. We’recelebrating more than 10 successful years ofplacing more than 3,000 students in career-related positions within the Windsorcommunity.

V.I.P. offers students valuable, career-relatedwork experience while providing localemployers with top-notch volunteers who canmake a meaningful contribution.

The Centre for Career Education introducedthe Volunteer Internship Program (V.I.P.) in1994. Every semester since, we have placedmore than 150 students in non-profit andnot-for-profit organizations throughoutWindsor-Essex County.

V.I.P. lets students explore their area ofinterest while developing networking skillsand community involvement.

More than 100 non-profit organizations inthe Windsor-Essex County area are involved,ensuring students have a wide variety ofopportunities from which to choose.

V.I.P. advantages

• build a support network of professionals

• participate in professional developmentworkshops

• contribute to the community

• receive recognition on your academictranscript as well as a Certificate ofAchievement

• you can participate in V.I.P. twice while at the University of Windsor, helping youdevelop your career path

Placement process

• Applications for V.I.P. are available at theCentre for Career Education and onlineat www.cce.uwindsor.ca

• Students in good academic standing willbe selected based on their applicationand formal interview. During theinterview, students are required toindicate their areas of interest andcommunicate how V.I.P. will help themachieve their career goals.

• The Centre for Career Education willplace students with non-profit or not-for-profit organizations the third week of each semester.

• Students selected for V.I.P. must attendan orientation session to discuss programrequirements before they begin theirvolunteer placement.

How does it work?

Volunteer placements run for a 10-weekperiod during the Fall, Winter andIntersession/Summer session semesters.

• students are required to volunteer for a total of 40 hours per semester.

• the V.I.P. co-ordinator is responsible for all aspects of the program, includingstudent selection.

• we suggest that students work fourhours per week to balance theirstudy/academic schedules.

Co-operative Education offers a well-roundededucation incorporating academic theory andreal world application. By combiningsemesters of study with semesters of full-time, paid employment in career-relatedpositions, you will be able to:

Co-op at the University of Windsor is apartnership between students, employersand the university. The Centre for CareerEducation will help you develop your jobsearch skills, assist you in your search forappropriate placements and define yourcareer goals. Faculty members will evaluateyour work and help you integrate yourexperience from the workplace into theclassroom.

Employers provide challenging workexperiences that help you developtransferable job skills.

Our programs provide a diverse range ofopportunities yet are structured to offerstudents individual attention. We are proud

to offer placement opportunities far beyondWindsor and Essex County.

Students who are interested may seek aplacement anywhere in Ontario, Canada, andmany other countries around the globe. In thelast year, we have had students working insuch diverse settings as Switzerland andGermany.

The Application Process

Students who are in secondary school canapply to most co-op programs at theUniversity of Windsor on the “OntarioUniversity Application Form.” No separateapplication form is necessary and admissionwill be based on academic achievement.

For secondary school students interested inEngineering, Kinesiology, and Earth Sciences,the process is slightly different. Studentsadmitted to Engineering with an average of 80percent or higher in their final year ofsecondary school are automatically eligible toapply to participate in the Engineering co-opactivities beginning in the fall of their first yearof study. Formal admission into the Engineeringco-op program does not occur until thefollowing year. Kinesiology students will havethe opportunity to apply for the co-op programduring the winter semester of their first year.Earth Sciences students apply during the fallsemester of their second year.

Students not admitted directly out of highschool may apply to most programs early inSeptember during their first or second year.Applications are available online atwww.cce.uwindsor.ca. Admission duringthese entry points will be based on

academic achievement, an assessment of the student’s resumé, previous work andvolunteer experience and, in some cases, an admission interview.

Co-op Fees

In addition to your tuition, co-op students are subject to an additional fee which isdistributed over eight consecutive semesters.These fees are necessary in order to

administer the co-op program and provide co-op students with essential job developmentresources. For most programs, fee paymentwill begin in the fall semester of your firstyear in the co-op curriculum.

Program Information

Earth Science is the study of the Earth, past,present, and future. Earth scientists use theirskills in mathematics, chemistry, physics andbiology to interpret events that have shapedthe Earth.

They apply their knowledge of Earth’s systemsin the search for and management of naturalresources (water, minerals, hydrocarbons), tothe assessment, protection and remediationof the environment, and to assess anddevelop better land-use information. Fourdegree programs are available:

Program Information

The Environmental Biology Co-op Programleads to the honours degree of Bachelor ofScience (Environmental Biology) Co-op. Thecurriculum consists of a balance of courses inbiology (mainly ecological), chemistry(general, organic, analytical) and resourcemanagement. The biology courses include acore in biology (physiology, genetics, ecology)plus others in ecology (population biology,community ecology, Great Lakes field biology,aquatic ecology, fisheries ecology,invertebrate, experimental design,conservation biology and ecotoxicology).

The Bachelor of Operational Research(Honours) Co-op will provide you withcompetencies in mathematics and statisticsalong with relevant courses in business,computer science, economics and industrialengineering. For most co-op students, preparing

for their first work term placement

is an intimidating experience.

They are unsure of their surroundings and their

employer’s expectations. Add moving to a foreign

country and not knowing the language to the mix

and you have what Dane Bertram experienced. Dane,

fourth-year Computer Science with Software

Engineering Co-op program, is thrilled that he took

the chance on an international placement with ABB

Switzerland Ltd. in their corporate research facility.

Dane condensed his first three work terms into a

year-long placement during which he worked on a

number of cutting-edge projects in software systems

and processes.

My experience of working overseas wasgreat. It gave me a chance to try living on myown before I graduate. It opened my eyes towhat leading-edge research in my field is like.And, it exposed me to a number of varyingcultures and allowed me to meet with a greatgroup of people from all over the world.

Not to mention, there is also the amazingtraveling opportunities due to living in acentrally located country. If you’re

intimidated by the language barrier or beingso far away from home, then you’ve got noexcuse. Dive in head-first and get ‘er done!

If I could give future international co-opstudents any advice it would be this: find acontact or another intern working in thesame country that you will be going to and e-mail them! Unfortunately, when I hoppedon a plane headed for Switzerland, I didn’tknow a whole lot more than the name of thecity I was staying in and which bus to take toget to my apartment complex. Once I got towork and met some of the other interns, Ilearned a ton of useful things that saved mea lot of stress and money.

One of the nice things about ABB in Baden isthat the interns have developed an e-mailmailing list “the praktikants” (praktikant isGerman for intern). It’s a great resource fororganizing events and trips with fellowinterns in the area or to get answers to anyquestions you may have. Plus, when internsfinish their stay, this list became more of abulletin board for selling off old items to thenext batch of interns.

When it comes to getting practical experiencefor a Computer Science degree I don’t think Icould have found a better position.

The technologies we worked with werecutting-edge and our supervisors encouragedus to research and experiment with alternateapproaches to any given problem. I workedwith amazing people and was given a lot ofresponsibility for how things were done forthe projects in which I was involved.

The part I liked best about my particularposition was my freedom of design andindependence. I was given a task and allowed

to complete it however I saw fit. Of course,my supervisors and co-workers were alwaysthere to bounce ideas off of and to offer anyguidance, but it was refreshing to not betreated as merely an intern, but rather as acolleague and co-worker. The equality andrespect the employees in Corporate Researchhave for each other is truly remarkable.

Of course, this kind of experience is not foreveryone, but if you’re sociable and want toget a taste for how the rest of the worldlives, works, and plays, you’ll have anamazing time. If you have the choice, Irecommend going for a full-year internshipover a six-month stay. Mine worked outperfectly: a one-year internship with a two-week trip home for the holidays. It may seemlike a year is a long time to be away fromyour family and friends, but let me tell youfrom experience just how fast the time flies.I’ve been to 16 countries on three differentcontinents now and I’m just gettingstarted…If you don’t have the traveling bugwhen you leave, you’ll definitely have itwhen you return.”
