A six day short term course on "How to teach effectively" was organized by the Centre forAcademic Leadership and Educational Management (CALEM) UGC-HRDC, AMU, Aligarhat AMU Kishanganj Centre from 9t~0 14thMay 2016. The purpose of this short term coursewas to ensure the professional development of the teachers of Muslim Minority ManagedDegree Colleges of this region and to help them broaden their mental horizon and to sensitizethem to the mission of quality and nation building.

The 44 participants of this course represented teachers from 4 degree colleges of kishanganjdistrict Viz. Kishanganj College of Engineering, Azmat Institute of Technology, InsanDegree College and Tauheed Educational Trust and teachers from AMU Centres atkishanganj and Murshidabad.

The Six day long event consisted of 16 training sessions deliberating on the topic rangingfrom the Use of JCT in education to Improving interpersonal relations in the class andacademic writing skills. The participants of this course were fortunate enough to learninnovative teaching techniques and strategies directly from the experts like Prof. D. N.Sansanwal, Prof. Shahid Farooq, Prof. Sajid Jamal, Dr. Raashid Nehal and Dr.vFaiza Abbasi.Out of total 16 training sessions, Prof. Shahid Farooq conducted 05 training sessions, Prof.Sajid Jamal conducted 06 training sessions, Prof. D.N. Sansanwal conducted 02 sessions, Dr.Raashid Nehal and Dr. Faiza Abbasi conducted 02 and 01 sessions respectively.

Day One (09 May 2016): Inaugural and Two Training Sessions by Prof. Shah id Farooq

Mr. Pankaj Dixit (IAS), D.M. Kishanganj inaugurated the event. In his address he highlightedthe role of teachers in nation building and put emphasis on providing need based training tothe teachers to make them capable of drawing out the inner potential of each and everystudent.

The Key note speech was delivered by Prof. Shahid Farooq, Department of Geology AMUAligarh. He placed emphasis on the need of using latest technology in the teaching learningprocess. He advised the young teachers not to stuck with the traditional way of teaching butrather bring variety in style of teaching by making use of latest technology.

Dr.Raashid Nehal, Director AMU Kishanganj Centre proposed a vote of thanks. Theprogramme was compered by Mr. Mohd. Asjad Ansari.

The training session began with an introductory session by Prof. Shahid Farooq in which hediscussed basic pedagogical concept like concept of teaching, ways to become an effectiveteacher and general classroom management skills. He also provided participants with realclassroom examples to make the concept more clear and understandable.

After the short tea break Prof. Shahid Farooq conducted a session on the use of JCT inEducation. The basic purpose of this session was to acquaint participants with the latesttechnology available and how it can be used to enhance the learning outcome of students. Healso provided participants with valuable information pertaining to the different authenticweb-resources and how relevant and authentic information can be accessed.

Following the two training sessions the event was closed for the day.

Day Two (10 May, 2016): Three Training sessions by Prof. Shahid Farooq

Day two began with a session on how to teach effectively using technology by Prof. ShahidFarooq. The focus of his presentation was to give participants with some useful practical tipsso that participants can use technology to motivate students to become self-regulated learners.He also advised participants to make their classroom presentations less text heavy andfocuses on creating classroom more engaging and interesting.

The next session of the day discussed the use of virtual globe for effective teaching. In thissession Prof. Farooq expatiated the use of Computer applications such as Google Earth,Google Map and GPS to provide students with vivid life experiences. Participants were alsoprovided with practical hands on exercises so that they can understand how thesetechnologies can be used in the classroom situations.

The last session of day consisted of hands-on exercises related to the use of varioustechnology in the real classroom situations. The pros and cons of the use of varioustechnologies were also discussed in this session.

With the Vote of thanks by Ms. Farha Rashid the event was closed for the day.

Day Three (11 May, 2016): Three Training sessions by Prof. Sajid Jarnal

On day three, Prof. Sajid Jamal, Department of Education AMU Aligarh conducted twosessions on teaching techniques and one session on planning & managing for effectiveteaching. He discussed with the participants various teaching techniques such as brainstorming, role playing etc. and their use and implementation at different levels. Further heelaborated techniques to make classroom an enjoyable place to learn where every child feelsrespected and cared. He also emphasized the role of humour in teaching learning process. Hesuggested the laughter might work as a devise to get back the attention of the students in theteaching learning process.

In the last session of the day Prof. Sajid Jamal discussed the planning and managementaspects of the teaching. He suggested lessons cannot be delivered effectively without soundplanning. He provided participants with various methods for planning effective lessons. Heemphasized that the classroom situations are extremely unpredictable and thisunpredictability doubles the role of the teacher.

Following the three sessions the event was closed for the day.

Day Four (12 May, 2016): Three Training sessions by Prof. Sajid Jamal

The day four comprised of 03 training sessions by Prof. Sajid Jamal covering the topicranging from building interpersonal relations to motivating the students for learning. Heelaborated the concept of classroom dynamics and discussed the role of teachers in promotinghealthy and nurturing interpersonal relationships in the classroom. He suggested that byunderstanding the forces operating in the classroom, teachers can solve the problem ofclassroom discipline and promote togetherness in the classroom.

He further elaborated the role of Goal orientation in motivating the students for learning. Headvised the teachers to create a mastery oriented learning environment in the classroom.Mastery oriented learning environment focused on learning not performance. He suggestedthat mastery focused learners undertake learning activities as a means to improve theirabilities and not as a means to get good grades.

Prof. Sajid reiterated that teachers should never equate the worth of the students with themarks he/she gets in the examination. The tendency of assessing students on the basis ofexams score creates a kind of vicious cycle affecting their mental and physical health.

The day four ended with vote ofthanks by Mr. Mohd. Asjad Ansari.

Day Five (13 May, 2016): Two Training sessions by Prof. D. N. Sansanwal & One Sessionby Dr. Raashid Nehal

We were fortunate enough to have Prof. Sansanwal as a resource person on the day five ofthe course. Prof. Sansanwal's training sessions focused on the role of evaluation andfeedback for enhancing learning. He remarked that today's teachers use evaluation as ameans to ridicule students. The true purpose of evaluation has lost and now people uses it as ameans to create unhealthy and unjustifiable hierarchal system with in the classroom. Headvised the teachers to use evaluation as means to diagnose the problem areas of the child.He further suggested that this shift might help students better cope with any examinationrelated stress.

The next session of the day by Dr. Raashid Nehal Director AMU Kishanganj centre focusedon academic writing skills. He discussed with the participants ways of writing for academicjournals. He also discussed with the participants the nitty-gritty of academic writing. He alsoprovided participants with hands-on experiences and exercises on how to write effectively foracademic purposes.

Following the three training sessions the event was closed for the day

Day Six (14 May, 2016): One Training sessions each by Dr. Raashid Nehal & Dr. FaizaAbbasi and Valedictory session.

The last day of the course began with the session by Dr. Raashid Nehal. He discussed indetail the impediments to effective academic writing. Again this session was drifted moretowards practical activities so as to identify the problem areas and help them overcome their

problems. He further elaborated that the only mantra to write effectively is to read goodacademic journals and practiced writing skills daily.

The last session of this course was conducted by Dr. Faiza Abbasi. This session was focusedon evaluation and feedback. She discussed with the participants the effective ways of usingevaluation and students feedback. She urged the participants to always use feedback as ameans to improve the academic outcomes of students and for the professional development ofthemselves. Being the assistant director of the course she also interacted with the participantsand asked them for their feedback so that the next programme could be conducted by keepingin mind the needs of the participants.

The six day long event ended with the valedictory session. Mr. Rajeev Mishra (IPS) SPKishanganj was the chief guest of the valedictory session. He remarked that in Indian culturethe place of teacher is higher than the God. He urged the teachers to perform their dutiessincerely and honestly as the future of our nation is dependent on the quality of school andschooling.

The event was compered by Mr. Mohd. Asjad Ansari. All the participants have shown theirsatisfaction in respect of the content, delivery and presentation of all the topic covered duringthe programme. Participants also appreciated the hospitality aspect of the event. Thecertificates to all the participants were presented by the chief guest and guest of honour.

The team of six day short term course on how to teach effectively wishes to thank allparticipants who have actively joined in the course to make it a grand success. We would alsolike to express our gratitude to CALEM UGC-HRDC, AMU Aligarh for their role in ensuringthe success of this event.

Valedictory function of CALEM short term course on "How to teach Effectively"

The short term course of 6 days duration on "how to teach effectively" ( 9th to 14th May) organizedby CALEM UGC-HROC AMU Aligarh at AMU Kishanganj centre concluded with the valedictoryfunction on 14th May at 6:00 PM in the academic block. A total no. of 43 participants from differentcolleges of Kishanganj district viz. Azmat institute of technology, Kishanganj College ofengineering, Insan Degree College, Tauheed education trust, AMU Centres at Murshidabad andKishanganj have attended the programme.

Mr. Rajeev Mishra (IPS) SP Kishanganj was the chief guest of the occasion. In his welcome addressDr. Raashid Nehal, Director AMU Kishanganj Centre highlighted the mission and vision of CALEMscheme of MHRDC Govt of India. He has also presented the brief overview of the event.

While appreciating the effort of the centre in organizing such a wonderful event for the localteachers Chief Guest Mr. Rajeev Ranjan emphasized that there is huge need of organizing such anevent on a regular basis as such type of training programme is very essential for the professionaldevelopment of the teachers and it is considered as one of the noblest profession. He urged theteachers to perform their duties sincerely and honestly as the future of our nation is dependent on thequality of teaching and learning process.

Speaking on the occasion Guest of honour Dr. Faiza Abbasi, Assistant Director UGC-HROC AMUAligarh reiterated that teaching is the noblest profession and teachers are entrusted with theresponsibility of keeping their students positively motivated and meaningfully engaged in theteaching learning process. She further stressed that the quality education promotes peace,togetherness and equality in the society. Highlighting the mission and vision of CALEM she saidthat this scheme is aimed at promoting academic leadership in teachers and to engage them in theleadership process. She further stressed that teaching is a state of mind and such type of trainingprogrammes focused on expediting the process of nation building by helping teachers putting theirstudents on right places.

All the participants have shown their satisfaction in respect of the content, delivery and presentationof all the topic covered during the programme. Participants also appreciated the hospitality aspect ofthe event. The certificates to all the particpants were presented by the chief guest and guest ofhonour.
