He scored 30 or more points six times, including three of the last four SCAC contests. The first-team all-conference selection also averaged 5.5 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game to establish himself as the league’s most versatile all-around player.

Heathscott led the Warriors last year with 16.5 points per-game (2nd in SCAC) and 7.2 rebounds per game (7th in SCAC). His .530 field goal percentage also ranked second in the league. Millsaps forward Quinn Lemieux enters his sophomore season after a breakout freshman campaign, for which he received votes in a tight race for SCAC Newcomer of the Year. As a freshman, Lemieux started 21 games for the Majors. He finished second on the team in rebounds at 121.

New Rhodes head coach Mike DeGeorge welcomes back sophomore Andrew Galow. Galow, who started in 25 of the Lynx’s 26 games, was SCAC Co-Newcomer of the Year last season while averaging 10.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Galow also chipped by averaging 3.2 assists per game.

    PAGE 12 - 2010-11 SCAC MEN’S BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS

When the Austin College men’s basketball team takes the court this season it will be faced with the difficult task of replacing eight departed seniors, including all five starters and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year Kola Alade.

However, head coach Rodney Wecker has a strong group of returning players led by All-Conference junior Scott Straley along with a large contingent of talented newcomers to defend the team’s 2009-2010 title of SCAC West Division champs.

Last season the ’Roos finished the year with a program record 20-7 mark and won their first ever SCAC West title in Wecker’s third season at the helm. Gone are three of the top four scorers from last season but Straley and fellow junior Josh Saunders each finished among the top five in scoring and will look to lead the team going into the 2010-2011 campaign.

Straley, a 6-5 forward, came off the bench in all 27 games and finished as the team’s second leading scorer with an average of 10.0 points-per-game. The athletic swingman knocked down 38.7% of his three pointers and finished among the SCAC leaders with his 87.5% free throw percentage and added 3.0 boards-per-game.

Saunders, a 6-6 forward who can either post up or knock down the long jumper and can even handle point guard duties when needed, averaged 6.1 points and 3.6 rebounds-per-game as a sophomore and handed out 37 assists, good for fifth on the team.

Walter Phillips will be called upon to replace the shot blocking abilities of graduated senior Spencer Burke this season after playing in 24 games, starting six, as a freshman last season. The 6-7 Phillips is a tremendous athlete and shot 53.6% from the field with 11 blocked shots and 12 steals last season.

He’ll be helped up front by Alen Michael, a 6-8 sophomore with superior athleticism, as well as bookends Justin Martin and Brandon Laubach. The 6-6 Martin is another front line player blessed with outstanding athleticism while Laubach is a 6-6, 275 pound sophomore bruiser who also possesses a lethal perimeter jumper. Laubach saw time in 10 games last year, hitting 52.9% of his shots and hit both of his three point attempts on the season.

The ’Roos will also be looking to 6-3 sophomore guard Justin Battley and 6-3 freshman Michael Kelley to provide some strong perimeter shooting in addition to Straley and Saunders, while freshmen guards Tim Darst, Ransom Okapla and David Little will provide strong defensive play for Austin College this season.

The ’Roos were picked to finish 2nd in the SCAC West Division by the league’s coaches, and will be looking to earn a postseason berth for the fourth consecutive year under Wecker.

    2010-11 PREVIEW BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN COLLEGE PANTHERS

The Birmingham Southern Men’s Basketball program enters its fourth season since transitioning from NCAA Division I to Division III in 2007. Coming off a successful 20-5 record and a share of the SCAC East Division title in 2010, head coach Mitch Cole’s Panther basketball team hopes to seize the momentum and continue to see championship level play in 2010-11.

In 2009-10 the Panthers ranked at the top of the SCAC in several statistical categories including scoring offense (77 ppg), scoring margin (+10.7), assists (15.2), steals (9.2) and made three-pointers per game (8.6). With an impressive 14-0 record at home, more and more fans have come to be a part of the fast-paced action in Bill Battle Coliseum. Cole thinks the program is headed in the right direction and hopes to continue its winning ways as the Panthers enter the final “transitional” season before becoming full-fledged Division III members in 2011-12.

“We have definitely made significant strides since starting three years ago,” Cole said. “Each season, our student-athletes gain valuable experience and we are seeing them take more ownership of the program. As leaders emerge and make a positive impact on the younger guys, our hope is that success will breed more success. Our goals are to play at a high level every game as we finish our last year of the transition.”

The 2010-11 season will be as exciting as ever when the Panthers take the floor in November. Losing six seniors to graduation will test the Panthers early, but Cole feels as though his six upperclassmen (four seniors and two juniors) provide a strong nucleus for the coming year.

“Our seniors Pat Price (6’0 G), Mark Messenger (6’5 F), Isiah Doaty (5’10 PG), and Phil Rodgers (6’4 C) have been around a while,” Cole said. “They have invested many hours into helping us become contenders in the SCAC and have done so without the hope of post-season play. I know they want to finish strong and go out on top. Each of these young men have earned the respect of their teammates, coaches, and fans as outstanding student-athletes of high character.”

Juniors Caleb Lee and Jasen Jonus (2009-10 SCAC Newcomer of the Year) will also provide leadership and experience to an otherwise young Panther squad. Ten of the 16 players are underclassmen, each with the talent to make an impact this season. The four sophomores will be looked upon to carry the load as Blaise White (5’10 PG), Kevin Kegarise (6’0 G), Zac Richards (6’6 F), and Hart Ahumada (6’4 G) return after promising freshman campaigns. They all earned valuable playing time last year and have worked hard in the off season to improve.

“Our juniors and sophomores are going to have to be difference makers this season,” Cole said. “Each of these players will be called upon to step up on the court and in the locker room to help us achieve our goals as a team.”

Blending the old with the new is oftentimes difficult, but Cole hopes to capture the chemistry with a cast of six freshmen who will compete for minutes. Jason Holland (6’0 G), Nick Murphy (6’3 G), Colin Henry (6’3 G/F), Griffin Schamp (6’3 G/F), Daniel McFadden (6’4 F), and Ricky Shemanski (6’8 F/C) make up the 2010-11 freshman class for the Panthers.

“We have a talented group of freshmen who are on a college campus for the first time,” Cole said. “They have handled the adjustment well and are understanding the effort, intensity and consistency needed to compete at a high level of college basketball. I am really excited about their potential for this season and the next four years.”

The 2010-11 schedule is perhaps one of the most challenging in recent years. University of the Ozarks, Berry College, University of New Orleans, LaGrange and Huntingdon are just a few of the non-conference opponents that will test the Panthers early. In addition, another matchup in December on the road against top SCAC powers Centre and DePauw will have championship implications early in the season. Eastern rivals like Rhodes, Oglethorpe, and Sewanee continue to develop, as well as those contenders in the West like Trinity, Southwestern and Millsaps.

For the first time, the Panthers will play in an Independent Post Season Tournament with five other schools in March. This will give BSC a chance to compete in March and get the feel for Championship Tournament play starting in 2011-12.

  • 2010-11 PREVIEW CENTRE COLLEGE COLONELS

    PAGE 14 - 2010-11 SCAC MEN’S BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS

The 2010-2011 Centre men’s basketball team will have the bar set high following a season where the Colonels made it back to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the fourth consecutive year. Centre ended last season with an overall record of 18-9, an SCAC record of 11-5, and won the SCAC Tournament championship for the third time in four years.

Four starters return this year, including Alex Lloyd, the 2009-2010 SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year and All-SCAC Second Team member Jeff Mullaney.

Lloyd finished last season ranked 36th in the nation in blocked shots per game (2.0) and he was 42nd in rebounds per game (9.7). He led the conference in rebounding, offensive rebounds, and defensive rebounds. Lloyd also finished the season ranked second in the conference in blocked shots. In addition to the SCAC Defensive-Player-of-the-Year honors Lloyd was also named to the 2009-2010 SCAC Honorable Mention Team, and the SCAC All-Tournament Team.

Mullaney was also named to the All-Tournament Team last year where he was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the SCAC Tournament. He finished the season ranked first in the conference in minutes played, fifth in free throw percentage and seventh in assists.

Two other returning starters that will play key roles in the upcoming season will be sophomores Bryon Ellis and Josh Crawford.

“We only have one senior on our roster and we will miss All-South Region member Danny Noll, but I’m excited about our team for this season. We return a number of players who played a key role in our late season surge that helped us get back to the NCAA Tournament for a fourth straight year, so I wouldn’t call us an inexperienced team,” noted head coach, Greg Mason.

The Colonels, as a team, were third in the country in scoring defense, fifth in field-goal percentage defense, and 49th in rebound margin out of 404 Division III schools.

“Last year, we relied primarily on our team defense for our success and we were really good defensively, as we finished the season third in the nation in points per game allowed. Alex Lloyd, the SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year, will once again anchor our defense. This year, I think we will be much better offensively and that offense will be led by our junior point guard, Jeff Mullaney. Hopefully, we will be more balanced this year in our play and get back to scoring in the high seventies as in past years,” stated Mason.

“Depth was a concern last year, but this year we have more options thanks to our younger guys being more experienced, plus a freshman class we are excited about. Already, our practices have seen a different intensity level due to this increased competition,” Mason finished.

Centre will begin regular season play on November 15 against Maryville College at 8 p.m. in Maryville, Tenn.

    2010-11 PREVIEW COLORADO COLLEGE TIGERS

Colorado College enters the 2010-11 season with all the tools necessary to continue its climb up the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference ladder. The Tigers have leadership in seniors Nick Rose and Brady Ohlsen. They have experience with four of five starters and eight letter winners returning. And now they have legitimate depth with the addition of five newcomers at key positions. CC turned the corner last season thanks to Rose, who burst onto the national scene when he finished 13th in Division III averaging 21.9 points per game. He scored 30 or more points six times, including three of the last four SCAC contests. The first-team all-conference selection also averaged 5.5 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game to establish himself as the league’s most versatile all-around player. “He has ability to put the team on his shoulders, but now he’s working to make his teammates better as opposed to being the guy who is always going to challenge two or three opposing players and take it to the rim.”

But Rose was only one of the reasons CC improved from a 5-20 overall record during the 2008-09 to a 12-13 mark a year ago. Ohlsen, a third-team all-conference selection, was a force at both ends of the court. He finished third in the league averaging 8.1 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game, and 13th in scoring at 13 points per game. His presence in the paint helped dial up the defensive pressure that saw opponents’ field-goal percentage drop from .460 during the 2008-09 season to .404 last year. “I’m most proud of the team that we were defensively,” Partee said. “Last year we held most opponents to 40 percent or less. We know we can stop people, and that gives us a chance to win when we have a bad-shooting night or someone gets in foul trouble.” The Tigers also are counting on the continued development of senior guard Colin Madden, who averaged 4.3 points per game, and junior forward Jeremiah Waters, who was second on the team in three-point shooting while averaging 7.5 points per contest. Waters started every game last season and 40 of 50 during his first two years. Madden played in all 50 games the last two seasons and earned 11 starts during the 2009-10 campaign. Two other returning players who could see more playing time are junior Jeff Smith and sophomore Ian Rewoldt. “Jeff is more mature physically and could help us at the defensive end and on the boards,” Partee said. “Ian didn’t play much as a freshman, but his skill level has been met with some growth and maturity. He’s a different player now. He could be a 6-foot-6 wing as a sophomore. It’s almost like getting him as a new recruit.” With the addition of five talented newcomers, including a pair of true point guards, the Tigers finally have the skill and depth they need to keep opponents from concentrating too much on Rose and Ohlsen. The newcomers who could be in the starting lineup at the beginning of the season are point guards Ryan Milne and Jake Tramutoto, along with shooting guard Ben Foley. Two guys who will come off the bench, at least early in their careers, are Corey Dyer at guard and Daniel Webb at forward. These five players not only compliment CC’s veterans, but also will provide a foundation for the program in the years to come. “This is the best class that I’ve brought in,” Partee said. “These guys bring a pedigree with them that should make my job easier, but obviously they have to adjust to my system. There’s definitely shooting ability, there’s quickness, there’s athleticism, and there’s basketball IQ.” Colorado College opens the season on Nov. 17 at Division I Air Force, one of three games against upper-division opponents. The Tigers also play non-conference games against Lewis & Clark College, Whitworth University and defending Division III national champion University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. By playing the best opponents possible, the Tigers should be prepared for their conference schedule and the chance to achieve their lofty goals. “This is the best team we’ve had in my tenure,” Partee said. “Our goal, obviously, is the conference tournament. We want to make a push for not just being in the tournament, but for the championship. We want to win 20 games. We want to get into the NCAA Tournament.”

  • 2010-11 PREVIEW DEPAUW UNIVERSITY TIGERS

    PAGE 16 - 2010-11 SCAC MEN’S BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS

DePauw returns nine letterwinners including two starters from last year’s 20-8 team which finished second at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship last year.

An all-SCAC third team selection in 2010, senior guard Steve Lemasters has been sidelined in the preseason due to injury, but returns as the top scorer off of last year’s squad. Lemasters averaged 12.1 points per game, knocked down 78 three-pointers and shot 37.5 percent from beyond the arc.

Also returning as a starter from last year’s squad is junior guard Sean Haseley who was an all-SCAC honorable mention selection last year. Haseley averaged 11.1 points per outing with 52 three-pointers and 37.1 percent three-point shooting.

Other letterwinners returning to the backcourt include seniors Ross Simpson and Drew Wills as well as junior Tommy Weakley and sophomore Kevin Sullivan. Wills averaged 6.6 points per game last year and shot just under 50 percent from the floor, while Weakley averaged 6.5 points, hit 46 three-pointers and shot 43.8 percent from three-point range.

DePauw returns three senior letterwinners to the frontcourt including Ryan Russell, Ryan Sever and Joe Bergfeld.

Bergfeld played in just one game last season after sustaining an injury but averaged 6.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and shot 56 percent from the field as a sophomore. Sever played in all but two games last year and averaged 3.5 points and 3.8 rebounds each game and is the top returning rebounder from last year. Russell started nine games last year, averaging 2.9 points per game and shooting just under 59 percent from the field.

Among the newcomers who could contribute are guards Michael Wilkison, Alex Payne and Jeff Sustarsic as well as guard/forward Pat Haffin and center Camron Burns.

    PAGE 17 - 2010-11 SCAC MEN’S BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS

    2010-11 PREVIEW HENDRIX COLLEGE WARRIORS

The Hendrix College men’s basketball team tips off its 2010-11 campaign with an exhibition game on Saturday evening against former AIC rival and cross-town foe University of Central Arkansas. First year head coach Thad McCracken has been preaching discipline as the Warriors prepare for another arduous season.

McCracken takes over for a program that posted just seven wins in 2009-10 and will look to turn his team’s mindset into that of a winner. He knows what it takes to win as he is the pedigree of a winning tradition at Hanover College. McCracken was a member of four HCAC Championship and two NCAA D-III National Tournament teams during his playing career.

“I played for a winning program at Hanover and losing was never something we talked about,” said McCracken. “We need to change the mindset here at Hendrix after a tough season last year and get the team to believe in themselves and look at the schedule without thinking there is anyone we can not beat. I think they are ready to win and prove to people that they have the talent and are a team to be reckoned with in the SCAC.”

“I expect our upperclassmen to bring back the winning mentality like we had in years past. I think they need to accept nothing less than their best, continue to work hard every day, bring out the best in their teammates and lead by example. I hope to see a lot of discipline out of my team. I hope fans will see a defensive minded team that pays attention to details and plays with a lot of discipline.”

Seniors Ryan Rizos, James Ewing and Dane Nielsen will be called upon for leadership on the court at game-time and during practice. Rizos is coming off a solid season last year after averaging 8.7 points and 5.1 rebounds. He will likely be the senior leader on the perimeter. Ewing returns after missing half the season last year as he studied abroad and Nielsen returns to the court after taking the season off to concentrate on his studies.

Hendrix will look towards its leading scorer from a year ago, junior forward Nick Heathscott, to carry the team. Heathscott led the Warriors last year with 16.5 points per-game (2nd in SCAC) and 7.2 rebounds per game (7th in SCAC). His .530 field goal percentage also ranked second in the league. Also look for junior forwards Scott Sherrill and Josh Graham to come off the bench and pick up solid minutes inside the paint.

“Nick will carry the bulk of the load for us. He hit the gym hard during the off-season and comes back bigger, stronger and in better shape. Ryan is a match-up problem for a lot of teams. He has carried the bulk of our leadership role in the off-season and here in the preseason. We bring a lot of guys back that got solid minutes last year. I think we have a lot of young guys that are ready to step up and fill their roles.”

Junior guards Chris Goodman and Ammon Martin will compliment each other on the perimeter this season. Goodman is a sharp-shooter behind the arc, while Martin’s ability to attack the rim will cause problems for opponents and earn him trips to the charity stripe.

Sophomore Jaren Riley will bring the ball up the court and is a multiple tool kind of player. He can shoot from long range, while his speed and dribble ability allow him to get to the rim and the free throw line. Sophomore guard Chase Pemberton is coming off a preseason injury and sophomore forward Dayton Sheridan came back from the off-season as a bigger and stronger force inside the paint.

Second-year assistant coach Drew Gaeng brought in another talented class of newcomers. Jordan Baker, Alex Baker, Cody Smith, John Zimmerman and Colton Primm will all compete for playing time and push the upperclassmen during practice. Hendrix also welcomes junior guard Josh Stramiello to the squad as a walk-on.

The Warriors open their regular season with a five-game road trip, beginning at University of the Ozarks on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. CT. Hendrix will then travel to Greenville, Ill. to compete in the Tip-Off Classic against Greenville College and Westminster College (Mo.) on Nov. 19 and 20, respectively. The team will hit the road three days later to take on LeTourneau University and finally wrap up the stretch at Rust College on Nov. 30.

Hendrix’s home-opener is against SCAC West Division foe Colorado College on Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. in Grove Gymnasium. Austin College also comes to town the same weekend on Dec. 5 for a 3 p.m. affair.

    2010-11 PREVIEW MILLSAPSCOLLEGE MAJORS

Millsaps is looking to improve upon their success late at the end of last season’s 12-13 effort with another appearance in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. It will be challenging, however, with the loss of graduated seniors Blake Martinez, a second team All-SCAC selection, and Cameron Varnado and Chris Ingle. The trio was responsible for a full 58-percent of the Majors’ offensive output in 2009-10 with 840 points among them.

With that much scoring to make up the Majors will have to look to a large core of sophomores and freshman to step up and fill the void. Forward Quinn Lemieux enters his sophomore season after a breakout freshman campaign, for which he received votes in a tight race for SCAC Newcomer of the Year. As a freshman, Lemieux started 21 games for the Majors. He finished second on the team in rebounds at 121, just one board behind senior Cameron Varnado, and he scored 116 points for an average of five rebounds and 4.8 points per game. He has a good eye for the ball, leading the team with 14 blocked shots and adding 14 steals for his efforts.

Joining Lemieux in the front court will be junior Jeff Brown, a forward out of Marist High School in Atlanta. The absence of Ingle in the starting lineup should make more room for upperclassmen, like Brown, who saw an average of just seven minutes per game last year. In that time, however, he had a .632 shooting percentage and .750 from the free throw line. Major fans will have to wait and see if Brown can step up and make the most of his opportunities on the freshman and sophomore heavy roster. Aaron Caldwell, a forward from across the Pond in London, should also compete for minutes right away with Brown. The British sophomore averaged nine minutes a game last season in limited opportunities, scoring 35 points on the year.

Coach Wise has added five new freshmen to the mix at the forward position in the off-season to supplement his returners. Jeremy McLemore, Kyle Kinnear, Ryan Berger, Jayson Montgomery, and Brandon Allison will all look to contribute in their first collegiate season.

Brian Merkel, a junior out of St. Michael the Archangel in Baton Rouge, La., is the only other returning player on the roster with significant starting experience. Merkle averaged 29 minutes a game last season, scoring 102 points and pulling in 71 rebounds. Merkle also adds solid defensive play into the lineup with 21 steals and two blocks last season. Brian was the teams’ leading assist-dealer last season with 70. He also went 62-of-79 from the foul line for a solid .785 percentage from the stripe, a driving factor in the Majors’ leading that category last season in the SCAC with a team percentage of .730.

The Majors’ lone senior this season is L.V. Sumler out of Flora, Miss and Hinds Community College. In his first season as a Major, Sumler saw action in all 25 games, but did not break into the starting lineup. He did score 109 points, however, and pulled down 106 rebounds off the bench. His 65 defensive boards helped the Majors to finish second in the SCAC last season in scoring defense. The Majors allowed their opponents and average of just 60 points per game last season, and with so much of the offensive power a question mark this season, the defensive prowess will have to continue this year if the Majors hope to find success in conference.

Returning to the paint this season will be Ben Cooper, a junior out of Guntersville, Ala. Cooper averaged 11 minutes per game in the point last season and started five. He scored 110 points in his sophomore season playing behind Ingle. Other returners include sophomores Nick Cortese, Drew Guidice, Taylor Meades, and Tim White, all of whom averaged single-digit playing minutes last season.

Add freshmen Murray Kastner, Bruce Pears, Alex Meyer, and Ryan McKay to the mix of guards and the Majors will have plenty of competition for playing time this season. After leaning so heavily on Martinez and Varnado last season, the chance for any one of these guards to have breakout years is there for the taking.

The Majors’ 25-game regular season schedule (14 home, 11 away) is marked by three back-to-back home games to open the regular season against Dillard University, Pensacola Christian, and soon-to-be SCAC-rival in the University of Dallas all in the opening two weeks of the season before they head out to Montgomery to take on the always talented Huntingdon College Hawks. But, of course, all that serves as mere preamble to the brutal SCAC schedule which opens this year at home on December 3 as the Majors host the Austin College Kangaroos at 8:00 p.m. Major fans will remember that last year’s 60-56 win over Austin in the final game of the regular season punched the Majors’ ticket to the SCAC tournament.

The Hangar Dome will once again serve as host for the SCAC Basketball Tournaments as the league’s top programs will battle it out for the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The eight team tournament will begin February 25 and continue through the 27th when both the men’s and women’s champions will be crowned. This will be the second year in a row that Millsaps has hosted the tournament in Jackson.

2010-11 PREVIEW OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY STORMY PETRELS

    PAGE 19 - 2010-11 SCAC MEN’S BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS

After three consecutive seasons with at least of 15 wins, the 2010-2011 Oglethorpe men’s basketball team appears on the brink of breaking through with a conference championship and a return trip to the NCAA Tournament. The prospects for the upcoming season are bright: the team is returning seven of its top nine players which accounted for 73 percent of the scoring and 78 percent of the rebounding from last season’s 15-11 squad.

Factor in the healthy return of All-SCAC performer Todd Ward and the fact that the Stormy Petrels have finished in the top three in the conference in scoring in each of the past seven seasons, and the recipe for success in 2010-2011 is evident.

One of only four SCAC teams to qualify for the conference tournament in each of the past seven years, the 2010-2011roster is loaded with battle-tested players ready to fight for the conference crown.

Ward leads the way. Ward’s impact on the league was immediate after earning conference Newcomer-of-the-Year honors following his freshman campaign and collecting First Team status in each of the past two seasons.

Joining Ward on the floor will be backcourt mates senior Alex Richey and junior Joe Kennedy. Richey, an All-SCAC Third Team selection last year, was 10th in the league in scoring at 13.6 points per game to lead all Oglethorpe players. Kennedy, an All-SCAC Third Team selection as a sophomore who battled an ankle injury in his junior campaign, was 10th in the league in steals with 34 and 11th overall in assists with 74.

The Petrels will also benefit from the return of junior post Erik Strong, who earned 15 starts last season and finished 13th in the league in rebounding by grabbing 5.4 boards per contest.

Other key returnees are guards Alec Pitts, Christian Molinet and Tyler Cerone. The speedy Pitts will handle much of the point guard duties for head coach Phil Ponder while Molinet will log most of his action as a shooting guard with an explosive first step. Cerone, a deadly outside shooter, was second on the team in three-point shooting percentage (minimum of 30 attempts) last year by connecting on 37 percent of his shots from downtown.

In addition to the seven core players from last season, Ponder believes that three or four players among the returners and new recruits could make a serious impact with playing time. Returning candidates for valuable minutes are juniors Andrew Steioff and Sam Purdy and sophomores Branden Jovaag, Steven Davis and Price Hamilton. Two freshmen will also compete to get on the floor: Tyler Courson and Alex Vital.

“I’m excited about the year. We bring back most of our top guys and have guys ready to step in for the players that we lost,” said Coach Ponder. “I like our depth and feel like we have a good balance of size, athleticism and shooting. Some years we’ve been lacking in one area or another, but this may be our most balanced team. We have the option this year of playing big or playing small. We’ll continue to do some of the things we’ve done in the past, but we’ll definitely be doing some new things both on offense and defense this year that I think is going to help us.”

    2010-11 PREVIEW RHODES COLLEGE LYNX

There will be a new look to the Rhodes College men’s basketball team this season. The Lynx faithful welcome an entire new coaching staff and a roster of young players this season.

New head coach Mike DeGeorge hired assistant coaches Ron DuBois and Griffin LaDew this summer. DeGeorge has high hopes for the new, well-rounded coaching staff:

“I am thrilled with the staff we have been able to bring together to start a new era of Lynx Basketball. Coach LaDew brings knowledge of my expectations and an understanding of what it takes to excel as a student athlete within a national liberal arts NCAA Division III setting. Coach DuBois brings an incredible basketball background that includes playing and coaching experience at all levels of the game which has taken him all over the globe. Both coaches will be tremendous assets in every aspects of our program.”

The Lynx will look to lone Senior Josh Arant to lead the team this season. “In order for the team to have success, Josh will need to provide great leadership, play incredibly hard defensively and rebound the basketball,” DeGeorge said.

In addition to the Lynx Senior, sophomore Andrew Galow brings talent and experience to the backcourt. “Andrew has put on 10-15 pounds of muscle and his game fits our system perfectly. His performance at both ends will be key to the team’s success this season,” DeGeorge said.

Besides Galow, the team will look to four sophomores working to make an impact on the floor after freshmen campaigns where they saw limited action. Jonathan Smith and Joey Miller have made great strides in the weight room and provide the flexibility to play inside and out. Theo Hartwell looks to contribute upfront while Reid Cates will add depth to the back court.

The Lynx welcome five new members to the program who all have the potential to contribute immediately. Johnny Dunavant, Michael Gallagher and Patrick McGrail bring tremendous perimeter shooting, while Shane Watson adds athleticism unique to this level and Luke Gorman adds much needed size and length inside.

DeGeorge is excited to work with this group. “We face some tremendous challenges of implementing an entirely new system, lacking game experience and being small, but the focus of our players on implementing our system and culture has been outstanding. If we can sustain this focus, we will show constant improvement which will always be the goal to build a championship-caliber program.”

The Men’s basketball team looks forward to when they tip off on their home court against Howard Payne University on November 15 at 7 p.m.

2010-11 PREVIEW SEWANEE: UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH TIGERS

    PAGE 21 - 2010-11 SCAC MEN’S BASKETBALLPROSPECTUS

With just one senior and two juniors on the roster, the Sewanee men’s basketball team is looking towards a season of growth and promise. The three upperclassmen bring a wealth of experience and skills to the court and will be looked upon to lead the eleven freshmen and sophomores, all of who will be expected to take on impact roles in the 2010-2011 season.

The Tigers are coming off a 2009-10 campaign that featured a young squad and produced a 4-21 overall record and a 1-15 record in the SCAC. Head coach Bubba Smith started a line-up for most the season that came into the year with combined total of just 14 collegiate starts.

Despite their inexperience, the Tigers led the SCAC in offensive rebounding and eight of the team’s losses were by ten points or less. The returnees from last year’s team were forced to learn SCAC basketball the hardest way and their on-the-job training has left them hungry for the year ahead. Combined with a bevy of talented newcomers, the Sewanee Tigers look poised to take the team to the next level in 2010-11.

Team captain Tony Marelle, the Tigers’ lone senior and an Honorable Mention All-SCAC performer last year, returns to lead the squad in 2010-11. Marelle returned to the team last fall after taking a year off and quickly became the team’s go-to leader. Marelle battled through early-season injuries to finish second in the SCAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6) and fifth in the league in assists (4.0).

Sam Martin and Trent Williams return as the squads’ only two juniors and the two are talented athletes whose off-season motivation should translate into exceptional performances throughout the season. Martin, who’s a game-changer on defense, finished the 209-10 season ranked tenth in the SCAC in blocked shots and third on the team in rebounding. Williams, who battled injuries on and off throughout the entire 2009-10 season, scored a career-high 19 points against Rhodes last year and pulled down a personal-best seven rebounds on three separate occasions during the season.

The Tigers return a five-man sophomore class in 2010-11 that gained invaluable experience as freshmen last season. Lewis Affronti is arguably the most versatile player on the Tiger roster. He started 21 games as a freshman and finished among the team leaders in every statistical category. Brett Bouldin returns to the team with the potential to be one of the best shooters in the conference. He shot 36% from three-point range as a freshman, the second-best total on the team.

Tyler Brown finished tenth in the SCAC in rebounds as a freshman. He is the emotional leader of the team, and no one plays harder or attacks the rim with more energy. Matt Cowan joined the team during the second semester after transferring from the University of Kentucky. He is one of the best shooters in the league and led the Tigers in three-point percentage, shooting a robust 47% as a freshman. Derrick Duncan is quick and athletic guard who presents a match-up problem for most of the conference. A two-sport athlete who also plays football at Sewanee, he will bring toughness and intensity to the team.

Sewanee welcomes the addition of six true freshmen to the team for the 2010-11 campaign. Bryan Beviacqua is a skilled and quick point guard with a nice outside touch. He averaged 13 points and seven assists as a senior. Valentino Bryant is a versatile combo guard who can do a bit of everything. He averaged 12 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds.

Hudson Duncan is a crafty lefty with a smooth stroke from the outside. He loves to do the little things to help his team win, and was known for his shooting, work ethic, and hustle on back-to-back 20-win teams.

Todd Kirkpatrick is a versatile and athletic forward with good size and a knack for scoring. Will Merrell is a balanced player with a smooth jumper. Anvil Nelson is a bruising post player with the ability to score with his back to the basket or facing up. Also a dynamic rebounder, Anvil was the only player to finish among the metro Nashville leaders in both scoring and rebounding.

The 2010-11 campaign begins for the Tigers at home against Covenant College (who the Tigers beat 57-50 to open the season in 2009-10). The team will then travel to St. Louis to take on two tough opponents from the SLIAC, Webster University and Principia College (defeated 73-63 by Sewanee last season) in the Webster Classic. November concludes for the Tigers with a home game against regional foe Johnson Bible College.

In December, Sewanee begins with two tough road contests, traveling to Nashville to play Free Will Baptist and then to Atlanta for their first SCAC tilt against Oglethorpe University. The non-conference portion of the season concludes with home games against Webster University and Berry College in the annual Lon Varnell classic, followed by two February contests at Covenant College and at home against Free Will Baptist before the Tigers begin their SCAC conference schedule and their quest to return to the conference tournament.

  • 2010-11 PREVIEW SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY PIRATES

    PAGE 22 - 2010-11 SCAC MEN’S BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS

After one of their best seasons ever the Southwestern men’s basketball team hits the court once again to kick off the 2010-11 season on November. 15. Three seniors highlight this dynamic team and will be the catalysts for an exciting season.

“We are going to be as good as our seniors and the leadership they provide,” said head coach Bill Raleigh about his senior class comprised of Jonathan Brown, Nick Caputo and Robbie Hanley. “With their leadership we are going to go as far as they can carry us.”

Brown and Caputo were All-SCAC selections last season. Brown led the team averaging 13.7 points per game and was also tops in shooting percentage at 54.5%, blocked shots with .8 per game and rebounds, pulling down 5.2 per game.

Caputo’s outside threat kept teams from collapsing down on Brown. Caputo shot 27% from three point range last season and averaged 12 points per game, second most on the team. He also had a commanding presence on the boards averaging 4.7 per game, third most on the team last season.

Hanley was a solid player off the bench for the Pirates last season shooting 51.1% from the floor and 46.2% from long range. He averaged 2.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game last year.

Beyond the senior class the Pirates return five additional players that will be vying for playing time along with the 11 newcomers on the roster.

“We have a lot of questions to answer and we have some good, talented young players,” Raleigh said. “I am interested to see who is going to step up for us this season. Versatility will be the key to our season as we have a lot of interchangeable parts and once those cogs begin to move in sync with one another we have a chance to make some waves in the conference; it will just take some time to get to that point.”

Raleigh anticipates this team continuing to play an up-tempo style but will also be focusing on the defensive side of the ball, forcing teams into mistakes and capitalizing on those in transition.

“We need to play solid defense in order to get out and run,” said Raleigh.

Last season Southwestern was fourth in scoring defense, holding teams to 61.3 points per game and third in field goal defense keeping teams shooting 39% from the floor.

The Pirates are predicted to finish fourth in West in 2010-11 according to the SCAC pre-season poll, just three votes behind Austin College and Colorado College who tied for second.

To open the season Raleigh returns to the University of Dallas, where he coached for three seasons before coming to Southwestern, for SU’s first game on November 15th. The Pirates have never lost to the Crusaders and tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. SU hosts their first home contest on Friday, November 26th, taking on Wisconsin-River Falls at 3:00 p.m. before opening up SCAC league play against Trinity at home on December 3rd at 8:00 p.m.

    2010-11 PREVIEW TRINITY UNIVERSITY TIGERS

The forte of Trinity Tigers men’s basketball has been defense for a number of years. Last season, the Tigers were ranked third in scoring defense in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, allowing 62.5 points per game. An enhancement to the Tigers defensive efforts during the 2010-11 campaign is that seven players – including five newcomers – stand at 6-foot-6 and taller.

“Every year, we try to establish ourselves defensively,” said head coach Pat Cunningham, in his 12th year at the Tigers helm. “There is no question we have more height than in recent years. Height can give you some abilities to be more effective defensively.”

The Tigers start the campaign on Nov. 15 in the friendly confines of Sams Gym, taking on the Schreiner University Mountaineers. Nine returnees, including two starters, will lead the charge as Trinity strives to regain a conference title and NCAA berth. Last season, the Tigers recorded an overall record of 14-13, and were 9-7 in the SCAC. Trinity beat Oglethorpe 61-52 in the SCAC Championship Tournament at Jackson, Miss. (Millsaps College), and lost 62-44 to eventual champion Centre in the semifinals.

The top returner will once again provide offensive firepower for the Tigers. Senior Luke Caldarera, a 6-foot-4 forward, was elected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division III All-South District Team. Caldarera also made the SCAC First Team, earning accolades from both organizations for the second consecutive time. Caldarera is ranked among the top 25 all-time Tiger scorers, while reaching the 1,000-points plateau. He became the 23rd Trinity player to achieve the mark. Caldarera was ranked fifth in SCAC scoring (15.0 points per game) and rebounding (7.9 per game).

Ryan Beal, a 6-foot-4 junior guard, scored 6.8 points per contest, and led the team in assists, with 100. He also grabbed 4.6 rebounds per game. Beall was the Tigers leading scorer, with 14 points, in the opening game with Midwestern State.Heath Hopson, a 6-foot-4 sophomore forward, averaged 4.5 points per game. Hopson led the Tigers with 15 points and nine rebounds against Concordia (Texas). Gil Melchior, a 6-foot-6 junior forward, accounted for 4.4 points per contest. Melchior scored a Tigers-best 15 points against Dominican (Ill.)

Sam Dworkin, a 6-foot-4 senior, averaged 3.1 points per game. Dworkin led the Tigers with 17 points against Hendrix in a home SCAC tilt. Also returning is Sam Harris, a 6-foot-1 junior guard. Three other sophomores have a year of playing experience under their belts: Joel Van Essen, a 6-foot guard; John Boxberger, a 6-foot-6 forward; and Chase Blakeley, a 6-foot guard.

“I think we have a talented group, and they have a chance to be good,” Cunningham said. “I think some of the returnees will be challenged by the new group. We are going to be young, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be successful.”

The addition of height with the first-year players definitely will help the Tigers. Clarke Allan, a 6-foot-8 post from Austin, Texas, was a two-year letter winner. Robert Kitzinger, a 6-foot-7 forward from Carmel, Ind., was twice named to the Academic All-State Team.

Jacob Cukjati of San Antonio, a 6-foot-7 post, helped lead the Apaches to the TAPPS 5A state semifinals and a top-10 ranking. Cukjati was elected to the All-State Second Team. He averaged 10 points and eight rebounds his senior year.

Jonathan Wilt, a 6-foot-6 forward from Chandler, Ariz., averaged 10.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists as a senior. He was named to the Fiesta All-Region First Team. John LaVanway, a 6-foot-6 forward from Chandler, Ariz., helped spark his team to a top-15 5A Division I state ranking. Zach Lambert, a 6-foot-4 forward from Frisco, Texas, holds school records for points (1,082), rebounds (620), steals (144), and blocks (95).

Matt Feldman, a 5-foot-10 guard from Honolulu, was a key member of the team which won the Hawaii state championship his sophomore year, and finish third during his senior year. Joe Shotland, a 6-foot-1 guard from Dallas, and Matt Selling, a 6-foot-3 guard from Phoenix, Ariz., were both successful multi-sport athletes at the high school level.

The SCAC Championship Tournament is slated for Feb. 25-27 2011, and again will be played in Jackson. At stake is an automatic berth in the NCAA playoffs.
