Size of Project: 1,000 + cubic yards; 8,600 square feet building footprint with slab-on-grade and 2 floors of slab-on-metal-deck, accented by exterior courtyard.

Concrete Strength Requirements: 4,000 – 5,000 psi

Water/Cement Ratio: 0.43 – 0.49

Placement Challenges or Unique Techniques: Access to the job site was one of the more difficult aspects of this project. A large portion of the project took place while school was in session, with a single project entrance crossing through a main pedestrian traffic area used during school classroom breaks. Concrete delivery and traffic control coordination were of utmost importance. Due to job site logistics, the courtyard was also formed and placed after the main building expansion had been erected offering no access for a forklift or concrete boom pump truck. Materials were hand packed and many of the courtyard concrete placements were done utilizing concrete buggies in tight areas on significantly sloped grades.

renovation including a two-story addition, new classrooms, counseling center and new

commons area.


Boora Architects set their sights on maximizing the potential of Central Catholic High School’s constrained urban setting and modernizing the existing building. The new and renovated spaces create an optimal learning environment through improved

access to natural light, larger classrooms, break out areas, and technology upgrades.


Space-conscious expansion strategies included a new 3-story building wing that encloses the underutilized east side of a central courtyard. All design solutions

supported the school’s goals of being responsible stewards of the earth’s resources. The design focused on sustainable landscaping and stormwater management,

superior indoor air quality and efficient mechanical systems.


Project logistics demanded for in-time deliveries and creative scheduling to limit impact to the students as well as overcome the new addition’s tight corridors.


After the building’s basement walls and slab-on-grade were completed, two floors of slab on metal deck were placed and tied into the existing building corridors

thus completing the new structure’s concrete scope.


A focal point of the project was an eye catching addition to the school’s central courtyard.


The courtyard build was highlighted by complex tiered planter walls, radius steps, and a new stairway leading up to the new Monsignor

Tim Murphy Center.


The Central Catholic addition offered a variety of schedule and logistical challenges that were met head on with creative thinking and coordination providing new space for

anticipated growth over the next 25 years.
