The Great Lakes Center for Energy Smart Communities (“GLC”) is the nation’s first carbon neutral All‐Digital Community out‐reach program founded by Richard Dent, the 1985 Super Bowl MVP and 2011 NFL Hall of Fame Inductee. Research and Education contributions go back into the community through projects developed at the GLC’s various technology Laboratories. The Lab, a 501c3 organization, funded, in part,through The Make a Dent Foundation, with a focus on Smart Grid, Smart Homes, Renewable Energy Platforms, and other issues facing our “All Digital” way of life. The Lab has the Who’s Who of industry as Platinum members participating in joint ventures. Selected Universities and Department of Energy (“DOE”) agencies will be members sharing IP and technology.

GLC’s mission is to commercialize and create distribution channels for the lab’s research and development. GLC will target builders that are planning green community projects and city economic development agencies that are working with state and local non‐profit groups like CEDA (www.CEDA.com) to help facilitate and support community economic development planning. GLC will provide energy assessment audits, business‐case retrofit solutions, project management oversight on construction, post‐construction end‐user training and service monitoring and reporting. The key technology differentiation will be the implementation of a smart grid managed‐area network (“MAN”) using both WIMAX Mesh and Broadband of Power Lines. GLC’s MAN will integrate smart homes using a “gateway cloud” that will provide services to smart appliances and other devices with network‐centric sensors that GLC or its partners install and maintain. The lab will also serve as a data center hub for community command and control operations ‐ functioning to provision, monitor and report service requests; providing a 360o view of all customer interactions across all touch‐points within and across the All‐Digital Community™ resident and commercial properties. GLC is engaged in community development projects and have organized a first class management team that will be based in Park Forest, Illinois. GLC has the support of the Village of Park Forest, Illinois to build a sustainable green community – using Smart MicroGrid technology to connect and configure smart homes that will be part of an All‐Digital “Green” Community based on GLC’s design; the initial Pilot Phase targets the 10,000 residents offering multi‐smart home retrofit configurations. GLC is currently vetting engineering specifications and will start deployment in the community by Q4 of 2011. The project will represent and showcase GLC’s end‐state vision of the first All‐Digital “Green” Community program of its kind in the United States. This $11 million, 18‐month project will be funded by a combination of equity; debt, charitable contributions, and federal/state grant financing. GLC is currently negotiating with several Sources of Funds to underwrite its cost projections. This project illustrates a unique All‐Digital Green Echo System ‐ at its foundation is a four‐tiered Carbon Neutral Smart MicroGrid utilizing Renewable Power Plants; Waste Gasification Digester (“WGD”)1, Anaerobic Digesters/Bio‐Methane (AD)2, Combined Heat and Power (CHP)3 through a DOE awarded contract, and Zenith Solar Concentrated Photovoltaic Array4 all of which are planned to power GLC’s facilities which include corporate headquarters and energy consulting services, R & D laboratories with excess capacity to deliver power to the residents of the Village of Park Forest, and learning center services for job creation, retaining and placement. A joint‐venture effort is being planned with ComEd and other utility companies for redistribution of alternative “green” power sources to the community. GLC’s strategic mission is to expand its WGD and AD technologies to other communities for developing alternative energy solutions that are byproducts that deal with municipal solid waste and other biomass; as landfill permitting is no longer echo‐compliant and communities are demanding more sustainable energy solutions for waste management.
Great Lakes Center for Energy Smart Communities™ GLC’s facilities will be a state‐of‐the‐art building automation that will support three operations:
1. Advance R&D Laboratories to vet renewable energy technologies planned as possible products/services for community retrofit projects, and new master plan community developments;
2. Energy assessment and conservation consultancy practice; 3. Class‐room and e‐learning center that will provide instruction and online courseware for
suppliers, installers, energy consultants, and community residents. GLC’s operations has, as one of its primary objectives, creating new jobs that will leverage these green sustainable technologies and lessons‐learned as it implements them in the community and throughout the state. The three interdependent operations will incorporate both university and government renewable energy programs to remain complementary and compatible with industry energy technology standards for “plug & play” integration. The lab and training services are Not‐for‐Profit elections that are partially funded by foundations who’s charters include community economic development programs such as GLC will offer. The consulting practice is a For‐profit election. The lab seeks notable participating partners such as AT&T, Verizon, PeoplesGas, Siemens, HP, Oracle, and GE as Platinum members. GLC’s sustainable engine illustrated below represents a unique business model that encourages proactive engagement with local communities, state, and federal agencies such as the DOE.
