This year’s competition featured eight marching bands from all around the state. The competition was divided into three classes based on band size, and bands were awarded first, second, and third place trophies as well as awards for the best winds, percussion, and color guard in each class. Class winners this year were Watseka in Class 1A, East Peoria in Class 2A, and Morton in Class 3A. Morton also won the Grand Champion award with the overall high score for the day re- gardless of class. The Marching Rockets would like to thank the numerous parents, friends of the band, and Limestone employees who volunteered their time and talents to help make this event a success for the sixth year in a row! Aside from hosting their home competition, the Limestone Marching Rockets have also attended several competitions throughout the state already this season. They opened their season with the Washington Pan- ther Marching Invitational on September 10, where they not only placed first in class 7A but also won awards for best drum majors and best percussion. On September 24, they competed at the Normal West Marching Band Invitational held at Illinois Wesleyan University. They placed first in class 2A and won awards for best winds, percussion, and color guard, and they also won the Grand Champion award for the highest overall score in the 1A and 2A classes. Most recently, the band traveled to Downer’s Grove for the Marching Mus- tang Music Bowl on October 8. The Marching Rockets won the awards for best music, visual, general effect, percussion, and color guard and took first place in class 2A in preliminary competition. Ten bands including Limestone were then chosen to perform again that evening in a finals competition, where Limestone scored 3rd place overall. The band will continue their sea- son throughout October and into November this year with performances at the Illinois State Marching Band Championships in Normal on October 22, the Western Illinois Uni- versity Marching Band Classic in Macomb on October 29, and Bands of America Grand National Championships in Indianapolis on November 11. Preparing Today’s Students For Tomorrow’s Challenges

On October 1, the Limestone band program hosted its annual Limestone Marching Rockets Field Competi-tion. This event has been held every year since 2011, serving as a fundraiser for the band and bringing hun-dreds of band students and parents to our community each year. Speech Season Kicks off

We are really excited for the 2016/2017 speech season. Our team this year consists of 40 talented young men and women who will compete in fourteen different events. Our team hosted a Speech-A-Thon fundraiser on October 15, 2016. The season kicked off with our Look-Heisel Early Bird Invitation-al on October 29, 2016. We will compete in fourteen different tournaments throughout our season with the pinnacle being our state series in February.

We have many returning members as well as many new fac-es. Returning senior, Katie Haage, will be reprising her role as cap-tain along with Mara Meismer and Katelynn Koeppel. Our coaching staff this season consists of head coaches Mrs. Kelly Nehls, Mrs. Cathy Largent, assistant coaches Miss Debra Hasselbacher, and Miss Hannah Bruce.

We look forward to a very successful season.

Wrestling season is around the corner and the

Rocket Grapplers’ season begins November 7

and the wrestlers are ready to get to “The

Dome” and wrestle in the state wrestling tour-

nament. Senior Blake Delgadillo is ready to

make another run at the state tournament and

bring home a medal. Some other seniors ready

to make a run at the state wrestling tournament

are Noah Trollope, Jhai Turner and Payton

Callear. Juniors Hunter Jarvis, Spencer Walk-

er, Taylor Fickes and Dennis Karl all earned

varsity letters and gained valuable varsity ex-

perience last year as sophomores and are

ready to make a run at the state wrestling tour-

nament. Sophomores Dustin George, Mason

Hess, Josh McBride, Marcus Linwood and

freshman Jose Blanco-Nunez look to break into

the varsity line-up this season.

Looking Forward to Wrestling Season Precautions for Winter

With colder weather just around the corner,

car windows and lights will often be frosted,

snow-packed and icy. Consequently, students

will need to get their daily routines started 5 to

10 minutes earlier to clear them. So get pre-

pared now by equipping yourself with a sharp

scraper and good brush.

As any driver should know, roads can be

treacherous and sneaky slick with any kind of

precipitation, especially when the tempera-

tures drop.

A few reminders to get to your destination

safely:

Slow down significantly

Increase your following distance

Allow more time and increased space

to slow and/or stop

Do not use your cruise control

Credit Recovery

Credit Recovery is an option that is available for your student several times throughout the school

year. Because every class counts towards graduation in high school, Limestone Community High

School offers the Apex Program to assist your student to recover failed classes. It is important for

your student to recover these classes as quickly as possible so he/she can stay on track for gradua-

tion. The goal of Credit Recovery is to give high school students the opportunity to graduate in a

timely manner. This program has policies and procedures that allow students who have failed core

courses an opportunity to make-up non-mastered standards without repeating the entire course.

Any student failing one or more courses in grade 9-12 may visit their counselor to apply for the

Credit Recovery program. Courses are self-paced with no direct in-

struction from a teacher. A certified teacher will be in the classroom to

monitor the progress of the students and offer assistance with technol-

ogy issues. Each course (.5 credit) is $150.00. Students may only take

one course per session. The next Credit Recovery session will begin

on October 17th with additional sessions being held in February and

June. Please contact your student’s Guidance Counselor with any

questions.

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has announced that it will provide the College Board’s SAT exam, including a writing component, at no cost to all public high school juniors during the 2016-17 school year. The SAT will replace the Part-nership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment as the high school accountability exam in Illinois. The date for the SAT will be Wednesday, April 5, 2017.

The new SAT focuses on the skills and knowledge that colleges want most. It covers vocabulary and math that are widely used in college and career and it features an essay to assess students’ ability to write coherently and analytically. The College Board has teamed up with Khan Academy to provide world class, personalized, online practice tools for students for FREE. This is a great way for stu-dents to practice their skills for success on the test and beyond high school. Students can use Khan Academy at their own pace, anytime, anywhere.

For more information go to: https://www.khanacademy.org/sat or contact the LCHS Guidance Office.

Peoria County School Facility Sales Tax - Nov. 8

Limestone Community High School does not, and cannot, take a position on the school

facility sales tax. To serve our taxpayers, however, we are offering the following infor-

mation purely for educational purposes and presents this information so that citizens

will cast informed votes, whether for or against the school facility sales tax. More infor-

mation about the sales tax is available on our website: www.limestone.k12.il.us.

The County School Facility Sales Tax represents the first shift away from relying on

property taxes for local school district funding in Illinois. The law went into effect in

2007 (based on a similar law in Iowa) allowing voters to approve a sales tax to fund

school facility needs.

Sales Tax Dollars CANNOT be used for:

Salaries

Benefits

Instructional Costs

Textbooks and Computers

Moveable Equipment

School Buses

Operating Costs

Sales Tax Revenues CAN be used for:

New School Facilities

Additions & Renovations

Land Acquisition

Safety and Security Improvements

Energy Efficiency

Paying Off Building Bonds

Architectural Planning/Engineering

Why is this Needed Now?

Many school districts in Peoria County are facing serious facility needs. Safety and security improvements to

buildings designed in a different era require expensive updating to support learning into the future. Sales tax

revenues can address facility needs over time while using competitive local contractors. The county sales tax for

schools addresses facility funding in a manner that shifts away from property taxes.

How Much More Would I Actually be Paying if this Passed?

$100.00 of grocery food = no increase

$50.00 of gas = 25 cents

$15,000 car/truck = no increase

$7.00 of fast food = 3.5 cents

$450.00 TV = $2.25

$40.00 of medicine = no increase

$70.00 pair of shoes = 35 cents

LCHS 2016 Homecoming: Welcome to the Jungle

Spirit dress-up days, variety show,

bonfire, parade, athletic hall of

fame, tailgating, football game, and

dance see large turnout!

Several months in the making, LCHS student council can finally breathe easy after planning and hosting another successful LCHS homecoming. The festivities started with spirit dress-up days: USA-red/white/blue Monday, Tie Dye Tuesday, College Shirt Wednesday, Tacky Tourist Thursday, and Blue/White Friday.

Wednesday night was the annual variety show with a wide-range of performances. The Senior class won the variety show skit competition. Eden Conner took 1st and Tempest Ritter took 2nd Place in the filler acts. The homecoming court was an-nounced with five girls and five boys having been nominated by their re-spective class members. Homecom-ing royalty was then announced with one girl and one boy being ultimately selected from each class as well as the overall Homecoming King and Queen who are members of the sen-ior class. See picture below for the students selected for the court.

The Bartonville Fire De-partment was on hand to control the bonfire during the pep rally. The LCHS March-ing Rockets performed the school song and athletic team captains spoke to the crowd.

Festivities continued Friday afternoon with the annual parade, organized by Key Club. A wide variety of clubs

and organizations participated in the parade along with some of the area Limestone grade schools. Tailgating kicked off after the parade with food, volleyball, and face painting. Even though the game was postponed due to lightening, homecoming week was enjoyed by all.

Published in 1925, The Great Gatsby is set in New York City and Long Island during the Prohibition era. Flappers? It’s got them. Parties? You bet. Great cars? Absolutely. The problem is author F. Scott Fitzgerald didn’t see the Jazz Age as all about hip music and sparkly clothes. He associated the entire period with ma-terialism and immorality. Our narrator, Nick Carraway (Creighton Peacock), begins the book by giving us some advice about not criticizing others. Now it’s time to meet our cast of characters: Nick’s second cousin once removed, Daisy Buchanan (Serenity Day); her aggressive husband, Tom Buchanan (Zach Johnson). Then there’s Miss Jordan Baker (Adyson Termatt), who quickly becomes a romantic interest for our narrator. Tom takes Nick to the city to show off his mistress, a woman named Myrtle Wilson (Megan Giddens) who is, of course, married. Myrtle’s husband, George (Nathan Graham), is a passive, working class man who owns an auto garage and is oblivious to his wife’s affair. Back on West Egg, Jay Gatsby (Michael Lewellyn) has been throwing great parties, where everyone can attend, celebrate, and try to figure out just how Gatsby has gotten so rich. Rounding out the cast of characters is Katie Haage as Mrs. McKee, Cameron Jackson as Mr. McKee, Nolan Browder as Meyer Wolfsheim, Katelynn Koeppel as Mrs. Michaels, and Doniven Hill-Bush as the policeman. The evening will also include several dance numbers as well as the wonderful music of the Roaring 20’s. Show Dates are November 4 & 5 at 7:00 PM in the H. Dean Briggs Auditorium at LCHS. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Tickets are $5.00 and may be purchased in advance during all lunch hours beginning October 24 and at the door. Seating is General Admission. What do you say Old Sport? Come enjoy this year’s Fall Play!

“It was much nicer a long time ago when we had each other and the space about the world was warm – can’t we get it back someway – even by imagining?”
