Dear Lanakila Senior Center Ohana:

May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii nei. Please join the City and County of Honolulu, our senior center and others, by sewing alei and placing it on your house door or fence (someplace visible to the public) to say thank you to our first respondersand essential workers who continue to give of themselves to serve and protect our community.

May is also a time when we celebrate Mother’s Day. Please thank those who have been “mom” to you in your lives. Wehope you enjoy our tribute to all the mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers, sisters, friends, daughters, granddaughters, and others who are moms and wish them a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 9th.

We also remember our dear friends and family members who have passed away. We cherish them and will hold themclose in our hearts always. This year, Memorial Day is on Monday, May 31, 2021. Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Centeris still not able to have our annual Memorial Program to honor our center members. When the State and Countypolicies permit larger events, we will hold a special memorial to remember and express our gratitude for the privilege ofknowing them.

A special letter will be mailed to all center members with details about the reopening of Lanakila Multi-Purpose SeniorCenter, so please look out for it in the mail delivered by the U.S. Postal Service in the next two weeks.

Finally, April was not only Volunteer AppreciationMonth, but also Staff Appreciation Day. I want tothank Custodian Lodi Tapawan, MembershipSpecialist Iris Hiramoto, Program Specialist RivaTorno, and Program Support Assistant CookieIrvine or their unwavering commitment to ourMembers and our senior center. Their commit-ment, dedicated service and hard work truly makesour senior center a special place!!

JAPANESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE

By Clarice Kumura

Fuji Shibazakura Festival in JapanYou may not know what shibazakura is, but you definitely want to see it.The shibazakura, or moss phlox, is a flower that can be enjoyed in Japan after the cherry blossoms have come and gone. Compared to the country’s iconic Sakura (cherry blossoms), these flowers blossom slightly later, between April to May, and bloom into tiny flowers. Since these colorful five-petaled flowers resemble cherry blossoms and blanket the entire ground like a lawn (shiba) in Japanese, they have been named “shibazakura”. The Fuji Shibazakura Festival is a fantastic event where you can enjoy these multi-colored moss. The festival is held in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture.

Celebrating Mothers

Near & Far, and

Close to Our Hearts

Tsuruko Asato was a member of LMPSC for over 20 years. She was in the Okinawan Club where she learned Okinawan dance. Sometimes she would perform at different places (functions). She was not very good but enjoyed it very much. She likes to “talk story” with other members and loved going to Vegas with families and friends. We will always miss her for being a loving mother and grandma.-Nobuko “Nobu” Oshiro

Linda Oka and Eileen Clarke share their mother, Shizue Ishihara, celebrating her 100th birthday drive by style!

Beverly Mau wishes a Happy Mother’s Day to Dorothy Mau, 2010 USC Chinese Model Mother of the Year!

Here’s a very special photo of my mom, Patsy Gomez, with a 100 watt, beaming smile! She’s sitting with her son, firstborn Denny, on her 99th birthday. She had a strong spirit and an energetic mind. She passed on only a week after her birthday, with many of her family members at her side. I, for one, miss her insightful opinions that she would state plainly, even if they would challenge me into formulating an opposite idea which I then needed to defend. Mom remained hungry for knowledge her entire life until the day she died. -Joan Wylie (baby of the family)

Corinne Chan shares a picture of her mom, Stella Young Chan.

Jane Higa shares a photo of her mom with sister, Sally Joyce, sharing “My Mother has done so many things unselfishly and lovingly, always putting others before herself. She hasgiven our family beautiful

memories with comfort and support where laughter flowed easily. The things we learn from her, we carry with us wherever

we go.“

“This is a picture of my mom Sally Nakata on her 97th birthday, May 15, 2020. Happy Mother’s Day and Happy 98th

Birthday to a special, sweet and kind mother. Stay safe and healthy.” –Dora Kitabata

Experiencing Homelessness can get Econoimic Impact PaymentThe Internal Revenue Service (IRS) continues to remind people who don’t have a permanent address or a bank account that they may still qualify for Economic Impact Payments, also known as stimulus payments. The IRS needs information from people who don’t usually file, and for the agency to have that information is for people to file a basic 2020 tax return with the IRS. The fastest and easiest way is to file a return electronically using IRS Free File. For more information, check out the outreach material, available on Internal Revenue Service | An official website of the United States government (irs.gov).
