Community Report 2006
Celebrate the Spirit of Giving
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO & CHAIRMANOur annual report to the community offers
an opportunity to share valuable information
about our accomplishments, goals, and
priorities, as well as about the people,
services, and facilities that set Health First
apart as more than a leading hospital
system and health plan.
The theme of this year’s report, Celebrate the Spirit
of Giving, reflects our record of giving back to the
Space Coast – our shared community – because,
after all, we believe good health is itself a gift.
More than a decade ago, in creating Health
First, we set out to ensure that our community’s
residents have access to the resources required
for good health. Transforming this mission into
a reality required community support, team-
work, and most importantly, a clear vision. As
part of this vision, we understand that good
health requires modern facilities equipped with
state of-the-art technologies, skilled healthcare
professionals delivering quality care, and a
network of support services that provides
necessary assistance and encouragement in
times of need.
As we work to deliver these ingredients for
good health, our community’s needs are
changing. And as a not-for-profit organization
accountable to all members of our community,
we change too, always striving to meet new
demands and developing programs that enable
us to give back.
This report is designed to provide you with
a better understanding of the Health First
philosophy, as well as offer information about
the many resources we’re proud to share with
the residents of Brevard County. As we continue
to lead the way for health care on Florida’s
Space Coast, we celebrate the spirit of giving –
to you, our community.

Health First Community Report 20066
On any given day, you’ll find members of
our team contributing to this mission
through a number of Health First initiatives.
On-call physicians make home visits to
elderly patients through our special Care
Level Management program offered by
Health First Health Plans; our sponsorship of
Operation NOW helps prevent teen driving
deaths by instructing young drivers about
road safety; and the Brevard Health
Alliance – supported by Health First –
delivers quality health care to patients who
require financial assistance.
At Health First, our parallel goals to 1) improve
health and 2) give back to our community
guide everything we do. Reflected in all of our
programs and services – and accepted as
essential to the delivery of quality care by each
member of our team – these goals are woven
into the very fabric of Health First.
“Providing health care through our
hospitals, physicians, and health plans
barely scratches the surface of Health
First’s role in supporting Brevard
County’s good health. Beyond our
doors…through dozens of free programs
and affiliations with partners in
charitable care…we’re giving hope
and help that keep us all healthier.”

The loss of a parent or loved one can be a life-changingevent, especially for a child. For many of these children, the best gift is a simple one – a shoulder to lean on during this time of great need.
Recognizing the value and necessity of a support systemfor grieving children, Health First developed BrightStar, an innovative program located in Melbourne thatprovides support for kids ages three to 18 as they facethe loss of a loved one.
The Bright Star program’s team of professionals, counselors and volunteers facilitates support groupsand workshops, and operates a special camp designedjust for grieving children.

LENDING SUPPORT IN TIMES OF NEEDQuality care requires more than exceptional
treatment for sick or injured patients. That’s
why Health First also offers support – support
for healthier bodies, support for healthier
minds, and support for healthier spirits – to
all members of our community. Through
unique programs, we provide assistance to
patients and families in need. In addition, we
educate and increase awareness about specific
diseases and health issues.
No matter the goals, the Health First mission
drives every program we offer. Some services
are geared to a particular audience, like the
Infant Developmental Clinic that provides
assessment and treatment to enhance the
development of newborn babies through
two years of age in a warm and nurturing
environment. Health First Leeza’s Place
is a resource center offering programs that
educate, empower, and energize both
caregivers and patients diagnosed with
memory disorders. Other services are available
to all members of our community, such as the
after-hours Nurse Advice Line, a free resource
set up to provide medical advice during
non-business hours.
We encourage you to take advantage of these
valuable resources. Doing so may lead to
your own good health.
“When I first decided to volunteer my time
to Bright Star, I was hopeful my efforts
would make a difference to these kids who
really needed extra emotional support.
After a few months, however, I realized
these kids had profound insights to share.
Yes, I was helping them, but they were
helping me, too. All children who are
hurting should attend Bright Star.”

“With the the state’s number one ranked
heart program, the region’s only trauma
center, and state of-the-art technology,
Holmes is the epicenter of the Space Coast’s
healthcare community. As such, we
recognize we have a responsibility to
keep pace with the changing needs of our
community, and this expansion does just
that – and more!”
Delivering high-quality care requires identifying and meetingthe dynamic needs of our growing community, includingthe improvement and expansion of our Health First services and facilities.
Currently, a $131 million expansion is underway at HolmesRegional Medical Center. Slated for completion in October2006, the new facilities will include a brand newEmergency Department and Trauma Center, an increasednumber of private rooms, and the new Heart Center.
The Heart Center will double the size of Holmes whileserving as home base for the Health First Heart Institute,a system-wide initiative that boasts the latest inpatient andoutpatient technology to be found anywhere in the region.
Holmes’ new 43,000-square-foot Emergency Departmentwill improve access to emergency care for the more than60,000 patients who pass through its doors each year. And, because more than half of Holmes’ emergencycases are heart-related, we’re situating the new
Emergency Department near our nationally-recognizedcardiac care center. By locating these services in closeproximity to each other, we will enhance the experiencefor patients and their families and visitors.
The Holmes expansion reflects Health First’s commitmentto ensuring Brevard County’s healthcare needs aremet…and exceeded.

Hope for Those WhoNeed it MostEnsuring medical care to all members of our communityis at the core of our commitment as a not-for-profithealthcare system. In 1991, Holmes Regional MedicalCenter provided the leadership and financial resourcesto establish H.O.P.E., a system of free clinics and mobilehealth teams providing critical medical care, medications, and access to 110 volunteer specialty physicians forthose who would otherwise go without. The individualsserved by H.O.P.E. through the last 15 years are notonly the homeless, but are also our neighbors andfriends who have fallen on hard times.
Our commitment to our community’s health furthermotivated Health First to explore model programs forexpanding critical health services and creating accessfor 70,000 uninsured individuals. The creation of theBrevard Health Alliance, our county’s only FederallyQualified Health Center, provides these members of
our community with a “medical home.” This entity isthe direct result of leadership, commitment, and thefinancial support of Health First. With our ongoing contribution of $3 million in cash and in-kind services, this newly created not-for-profit will ensure the availability of these critical services for years to come.
Since the creation of Brevard Health Alliance, 6,000patients have accessed more than $1 million in discounted medical care and $2 million in free wholesale-priced medications. Further, our network of specialtyphysicians has treated 2,000 patients free of charge.
Thanks to Brevard Health Alliance, everyone in our community has access to the care they need.
“The patients I treat at the Brevard Health
Alliance could not be more appreciative. I’m
proud I have chosen this program – and the
people it serves – as a
priority in my life.”

The 6,000-plus associates, 1,000-plus medical
staff and board members, and 2,000-plus
volunteers who make up the Health First team
stand on the front lines of our commitment to
give back. Generously caring for patients and
reaching out to our neighbors, their efforts
reveal the very heart of Health First’s mission.
In an effort to create opportunities for our
team members to give back, we’ve developed
a series of initiatives that encourage charitable
giving on the part of our employees.
Through these programs our associates
donate their time, professional skills, and in
some cases, their money – all in the name of
improving our community’s health.
Perhaps one of the best examples of our
employees’ generosity is the EAGLES program,
which stands for “Every Associate’s Gift
Leaves Everlasting Spirit.” This initiative,
which has helped raise $600,000 since its
inception, encourages associates from all
areas of Health First to contribute to
educational and fundraising efforts.

“The generosity of our associates is inspiring.
Every day at work, they demonstrate deep
compassion and true excellence with their
patients and customers. Even more telling
are the substantial contributions to our
community they make on their own time.
They consistently go above and beyond by
generously sharing their time, their money,
and their hearts with those in need. All of
us in Brevard County are blessed by their
ability to positively transform lives, both
at work and throughout our community.”
Other giving initiatives arise as the needs of
our community change…and as our world
changes. Early last year, Health First associates
donated more than $32,000 in the name of
tsunami relief. Months later, several Health
First employees donated their time and
money to the relief efforts following
Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma. In the end,
our associates contributed more than $60,000
to storm relief.
These examples highlight how our associates
give back. However, our employees do their
part 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It’s the
very nature of their profession. From laboratory
technicians in our hospitals and nurses at
our William Childs Hospice House, to
exercise specialists in our fitness centers, to
physicians who volunteer their time through
the Brevard Health Alliance, the people of
Health First give back every day.

Keeping a Watchful Eye on Our Patients
For critical care patients in our hospitals, a life-savinggift is around-the-clock medical attention. To add anextra level of patient care, Health First implementedthe VitalWatch electronic intensive care unit (eICU®)program for each of our three hospitals in 2004.
Combining state of-the-art “telemedicine” technology, computer software, and 24/7 electronic monitoring, our board-certified critical care physicians and specialized nurses monitor up to 62 patients in theintensive care units (ICUs) from a central locationoutside the hospitals. By adding VitalWatch’s additional layer of care, patients receive critical medical attention when they need it.
Currently, all three of Health First’s intensive careunits – located at Cape Canaveral Hospital, HolmesRegional Medical Center, and Palm Bay CommunityHospital – utilize VitalWatch technology.
Since its opening in 2004, the VitalWatch program has resulted in a 30 percent reduction in ICU mortality.

For more than a decade, Health First has
focused on setting the standard for quality
health care on Florida’s Space Coast. In fact,
delivering the best care possible – to all
members of our community – is our
top priority.
In this pursuit, we equip our hospitals with
state of-the-art medical technology; we recruit
healthcare professionals who are among the
top leaders in their fields; and we work to
ensure our facilities are comfortable and
accessible to all members of our community.
Our ability to give quality care requires ongoing
investment in both our physical resources and
our human resources such as the VitalWatch

In addition to programs like VitalWatch, during
the past year we invested millions of dollars
into a range of initiatives to improve Brevard
County’s healthcare infrastructure. From a
dramatic renovation and expansion of Holmes
Regional Medical Center, to the ongoing
improvement of our medical technology, our
dedication to meeting Brevard’s healthcare
needs – no matter how complex – sets us
apart as our community’s healthcare leader.
We are also working with other area
hospitals and the Brevard County Health
Department to form a Health Information
Network to support privacy-protected data
sharing. This initiative, which was made
possible by a grant from the Agency for
Health Care Administration, focuses on the
development of a web-based system that
will provide physicians and other healthcare
practitioners 24-hour electronic access to
a patient’s current medical information.
“Compassion is the basis for everything
we do. We are leaders in clinical
excellence, but we are people first – people
with a heart for serving others. There is
not a more personal, more intimate
service than health care. Our patients are
not diagnoses; they are mothers, fathers,
sons and daughters who we treat as if
they were our own. Our relationship with
our patients and the trust they place in
us is everything.”
