The big news this issue is the

launch of CorelDraw X8. Once

again Corel have added new

features to their flagship program.

David Mutch is presenting X8 at

the April meeting. David already

has a pretty vast knowledge on the

new CorelDraw X8, although it is

brand new to the rest of us. David

has been using it for some time as

an official ‘Beta’ tester. Part of that

job is to find the bugs as well as

suggest improvements to the

program prior to its release.

If this is something that interests

anyone else, I suggest having a

talk to David. He can give you

pointers as to how to become a

Beta tester.

Once again Corel Corporation is

supporting our group by making

available copies of the new soft-

ware for our raffle. This is one

meeting you really don’t want to

miss.

In May we will presenting Video

Studio X9 and seeing some of the

new features. This program was

released earlier in the year and it

will be interesting to see from the

experts what can be achieved from

this latest version.

In July we will be having our

Annual General Meeting. We will

be voting for a new committee and

it would really be nice to see some

new faces. New people on the

committee help to bring new ideas

and revitalise the committee and

the group. If this is something that

interests you I would encourage

you to think seriously about nomi-

nating.

It discreetly removesunwanted spots and imperfectionsfrom an image by painting withsampled texture and matching it tothe colour of the area that =yreouretouching. In a few clicks, you canseamlessly repair and blend ablemish or scar into the rest of the

Gaussian Blur effect is now availableas a lens, so you can blur imageswithout overwriting the originalimage. Changes are non-destructive,so any edits are displayed on thescreen through the lens rather thanapplied to the image pixels. The lensis created as a separate object on alayer above the image background soyou can edit the lens and the back-ground image separately, main-

taining the origi=ns al data andquality. TIP: Remember that a Lenswill affect all layers beneath it,including the background. So if youwant to use the Gaussian Blur Lens(or any Lens) on just a single objector just a part of an image, then firstcreate a mask with the shape of theobject / area and then apply theLens. A user asks: “I’m trying to import a filethat was drawn in Autocad. The importlooks good, however, none of theobjects are “complete” objects. Forexample, a square is actually 4 linesegments, and not a completed square.I can’t figure out a way to close theobjects. Any suggestions?”

Jeff: try this:

▪ click virtual segment delete tool.

▪ hold shift.

▪ draw box around the four lines asa test.

▪ fill box with a colour to see if it’sreally a closed box now.

User: “holy *!!* it worked. hours ofsaving as multiple file formats hasended. now, please tell me what justhappened. LOL”

Jeff: It’s a secret power of that tool thatmaybe 20 people on Earth know about.You’re student #21.

User: Thank you very much for sharingthis! Wow, that feature really ranks lowfor “discoverability”.

That will beincredibly useful for someof the stuff that I (and others withwhom I work) need to deal with onoccasion. Specifically, I’m thinkingabout data from scientific instruments,essentially the sort of “trace” that mighthave been produced by a chartrecorder back in the day, e.g., how thevalue of Y varies as a function of X.

Sometimes this stuff comes into Corel-Draw not as many-noded curves, butas a collection of straight line segments(it depends on the nature of thesource).

For example, I have 360 objects inCorelDraw, and that’s content that Iclipped out of something more compli-cated (>1200 objects).

When I simply combine them to makeit easier to handle and to get easyaccess to outline properties, it becomesa curve with 720 nodes on 360 sub-paths.

If I instead use your method – VSD tool+Shift – then it becomes a curve with361 nodes. Much better!

I have included information on these new components of Painter that are in version16 and I have enjoyed exploring them. If your creativity is turned on by playingthen you will enjoy the sound brushes. You do have to select sound track with astrong rhythm to get the best results. I also like the ability to import AdobePhotoshop brushes. There are many available on the web that are worth exploringin your creative moments with Painter 16.

Recently I was working on a flyerfor a client that was to containseveral photos of their products.The client had brought in aphotographer to take pictures.After the pictures were taken, thephotographer removed the back-ground from the photos. Thensomething was done that ruinedthe photos, they were saved toJPG format.

Look at the photo below. Yes, itis a zoomed view of the photo.Look carefully around the metalstand and you will see artifactscreated from saving to JPG format. Inaddition, the “white box” was added.

It was also resampled to a fairly smallsize. What was one of the first things I

needed todo? Removethe whitebox! Iexplainedto the clientthat intrying tomake iteasier, thephotogra-pher hadadded timeto the jobbecause Iwould haveto undowhat hadbeen done.

Before I spent too much time on theproject, I asked if the photographercould provide the originals in a fileformat that maintained the transpar-ency. I was sent PNG files and thatsolved the problems.

At right is a zoomed out view (50%) ofthe legs. You’ll notice the artifacts aregone. If anything, the new flaw is thatthere is transparency on the metal ofthe legs. Thankfully that was a minorissue.

I’ve tried to explain for years that JPGis almost always the touse. But many users are so used toJPG, they find it easy. If you arereceiving graphics for a project, makesure to ask for high quality originalfiles as it will make the job easier andit will look far better in the end.

Researchers develop a semiconductorchip made almost entirely of wood

(Nanowerk News) Portable electronics —typically made of non-renewable, non-biodegradable and potentially toxicmaterials — are discarded at analarming rate in consumers’ pursuit ofthe next best electronic gadget.

In an effort to alleviate the environ-mental burden of electronic devices, ateam of University of Wisconsin-Mad-ison researchers has collaborated withresearchers in theMadison-basedU.S. Department ofAgriculture ForestProducts Labora-tory (FPL) to developa surprising solu-tion: a semicon-ductor chip madealmost entirely ofwood.

The research team,led by UW-Madisonelectrical andcomputer engi-neering professorZhenqiang “Jack” Ma, described thenew device in a paper published today(May 26, 2015) by the journal NatureCommunications (“High-performancegreen flexible electronics based on

biodegradable cellulose nanofibrilpaper”). The paper demonstrates thefeasibility of replacing the substrate, orsupport layer, of a computer chip, withcellulose nanofibril (CNF), a flexible,biodegradable material made from wood.

“The majority of material in a chip issupport. We only use less than a coupleof micrometers for everything else,” Masays. “Now the chips are so safe you can

put them in theforest and funguswill degrade it. Theybecome as safe asfertilizer.”

Zhiyong Cai, projectleader for an engi-neering compositescience researchgroup at FPL, hasbeen developingsustainable nano-materials since

2009.

“If you take a bigtree and cut it down to the individualfiber, the most common product ispaper. The dimension of the fiber is inthe micron stage,” Cai says. “But what ifwe could break it down further to the

nano scale? At that scale you can makethis material, very strong and trans-parent CNF paper.”

Working with Shaoqin “Sarah” Gong, aUW-Madison professor of biomedicalengineering, Cai’s group addressed twokey barriers to using wood-derivedmaterials in an electronics setting:surface smoothness and thermal expan-sion.

“You don't want it to expand or shrinktoo much. Wood is a natural hydro-scopic material and could attract mois-ture from the air and expand,” Cai says.“With an epoxy coating on the surface ofthe CNF, we solved both the surfacesmoothness and the moisture barrier.”

Gong and her students also have beenstudying bio-based polymers for morethan a decade. CNF offers many benefitsover current chip substrates, she says.

“The advantage of CNF over other poly-mers is that it’s a bio-based materialand most other polymers are petroleum-based polymers. Bio-based materialsare sustainable, bio-compatible andbiodegradable,” Gong says. “And,compared to other polymers, CNF actu-ally has a relatively low thermal expan-sion coefficient.”

The group’s work also demonstrates amore environmentally friendly processthat showed performance similar toexisting chips. The majority of today’swireless devices use gallium arsenide-based microwave chips due to theirsuperior high-frequency operation and

power handling capabilities. However,gallium arsenide can be environmen-tally toxic, particularly in the massivequantities of discarded wireless elec-tronics.

Yei Hwan Jung, a graduate student inelectrical and computer engineering anda co-author of the paper, says the newprocess greatly reduces the use of suchexpensive and potentially toxic material.

“I’ve made 1,500 gallium arsenide tran-sistors in a 5-by-6 millimeter chip. Typi-cally for a microwave chip that size,there are only eight to 40 transistors.The rest of the area is just wasted,” hesays. “We take our design and put it onCNF using deterministic assembly tech-nique, then we can put it wherever wewant and make a completely functionalcircuit with performance comparable toexisting chips.”

While the biodegradability of thesematerials will have a positive impact onthe environment, Ma says the flexibilityof the technology can lead to widespreadadoption of these electronic chips.

“Mass-producing current semicon-ductor chips is so cheap, and it maytake time for the industry to adapt toour design,” he says. “But flexible elec-tronics are the future, and we thinkwe're going to be well ahead of the curve.”
