At CDEC, we’re hugely excited to be delivering services and support to schools as part of this initiative, because it represents a strong message from the Department for International Development. For the first time, nationally, the Government is advocating that learning about the wider world, how we’re connected to other people and places, learning about social justice and inclusive sustainability, are all crucial for our children if they are to successfully address the challenges of the future. Not only that, they are ‘putting their money where their mouth is’, and funding this learning for up to 50% of schools. However, the same cannot be said for the Department for Education. Let me reassure you that this isn’t just another article condemning the new curriculum, decrying the senseless narrowing of this country’s take on ‘education’, expressing outrage at the backward step that has been taken in the ‘traditional’ approach to teaching History, and lamenting the fact that what teachers know is good practice in involving children in their own learning and making it real and relevant to their own lives seems to be sidelined! Amongst Cumbrian teachers and school leaders, there is a spectrum of opinions on the new curriculum, from “Well, teachers will just carry on doing what they’re doing and ignore it. There’s likely to be a new government soon anyway” to “People don’t realise it, but this curriculum is a huge opportunity for schools to redefine what they’re doing.” CDEC has recently worked with the Local Authority to deliver training for Geography teachers, and for NQTs, around ways in which you can use global learning as a vehicle to underpin and bring to life other curriculum learning. We have developed a number of topic and cross-curriculum planning tools to help use global learning as a basis for reviewing and reviving your curriculum, and meeting the new 2014 requirements. Call us to find out about CPD we can tailor to meet your own schools’ needs in making a new curriculum that’s inspiring, progressive, challenging, creative, and will support your pupils to face the challenges of the future. Ghana comes to Cumbria Over 30 participating schools from across C

umbria signed up last September to take part in the final

phase of CDEC's 3 year 'Global Literacy for a Fairer World' project. The project, which

is funded by

the European Union, is supporting schools to explore global learning issues using the e

xcellent

Challenge and Enquiry Pack developed in the first 2 years, helping pupils take their own action for a

fairer world.

The 'Global Literacy for a Fairer World' project is working directly with partners from P

oland, the

Czech republic and Ghana in addition to Cumbria schools, and we were delighted to w

elcome

colleagues from Ghana on a visit to Cumbria in October. Our two Ghanaian teachers

, Agnes

and Ebenezer, touched everyone with their warmth,

openness and irrepressible enthusiasm for global learning.

During a non-stop week of school visits across the county, Agnes and Ebenezer talked wit

h

Cumbrian children and teachers, sharing their culture through story, song and dance. They

shared

their proud social and economic history since achieving independence in 1957, and talked

about

their experience as teachers in present day Ghana. Class sizes reaching over 80 and teachin

g days

that start by 7am captured everyone's interest, but above all their visit underlined a sense

of

shared humanity that connects everyone:

'We are all one people' Agnes said when interviewed on Radio Cumbria, 'irrespective of our colour.

There are so many things we have in common; we are not different in any way.'

As well as giving time to answering child led questions, (such as 'what do

you do about the tooth fairy in Ghana?') Agnes and Ebenezer were keen

to learn something about Cumbrian culture and traditions before

departing for home at the end of a busy and mutually enriching week.

The Ghanaian visit gave a special impetus to start the 'Global Literacy for a Fairer Worl

d'

project, which is supporting children to find their voice and take their own action for a

fairer

world. The project culminates with a celebration event in March where pupils will shar

e

creative outputs from the different 'actions' they have been inspired to take.

And we’re really excited to introduce a new character to CDEC – Fairtrade Thea, a teddy bear who will takechildren on an adventure to Belize to discover where Fairtrade chocolate comes from! Our new big storybookis part of the World from our Doorstep project, and has been written by Jeanette Milbourn, an aspiring writer currently studying for an MA in creative writing at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. As with our storybook Meet Zogg there will be resources to help bring the story to life, and Fairtrade Thea, designed and created locally by Sarah Preston (who made our wonderful Zogg soft toys). Look out for the book and resources in the autumn term.
