The very first newsletter was published in March of 2011 by former President Judith Hansen. It was only a page long, spoke of the work being done by those responsible for CCQ’s first year in development, and concluded with the words “Thank you for your continued passion and leadership.” Those were CCQ’s toughest months, but it wasn’t until after Dr. Ibrahim Al-Naimi became President of CCQ, that Foreign Language Department Chair Edward Feighny created the first issue of Vantage Point as Editor-in-Chief. Later he enlisted Gregory Twidal to write and design the next issues and Dr. Abdulnasser Tamimi joined as a second editor. From 2011 until 2013, the three worked together and almost every month an issue was published. Then in 2013, BJ Jumnadass accepted the role of Editor-in- Chief, and now an issue is printed every month; still written and designed by Gregory Twidal and many other contributors. In short, every issue focuses on the development and growth of CCQ. From student success stories, to promoting faculty work, Vantage Point newsletter has continued to support the college and we look forward to reporting all that 2014 has to offer. We have also began a quarterly newspaper Al-Mujtama’a, which means “Community” in Arabic. We are currently look- ing for assistance and if you are interested, please e- mail us. وجهة نظر CONTENTS Vantage Point is the Community College of Qatar’s longest running publication, but it was not the

first newsletter. The very first newsletter was published in March of 2011 by former President

Judith Hansen. It was only a page long, spoke of the work being done by those responsible for

CCQ’s first year in development, and concluded with the words “Thank you for your continued

passion and leadership.” Those were CCQ’s toughest months, but it wasn’t until after Dr. Ibrahim

Al-Naimi became President of CCQ, that Foreign Language Department Chair Edward Feighny

created the first issue of Vantage Point as Editor-in-Chief. Later he enlisted Gregory Twidal to

write and design the next issues and Dr. Abdulnasser Tamimi joined as a second editor. From

2011 until 2013, the three worked together and almost every month an issue was published. Then

in 2013, BJ Jumnadass accepted the role of Editor-in-

Chief, and now an issue is printed every month; still

written and designed by Gregory Twidal and many

other contributors.

In short, every issue focuses on the development and

growth of CCQ. From student success stories, to

promoting faculty work, Vantage Point newsletter has

continued to support the college and we look forward

to reporting all that 2014 has to offer. We have also

began a quarterly newspaper Al-Mujtama’a, which

means “Community” in Arabic. We are currently look-

ing for assistance and if you are interested, please e-

mail us. [email protected]

Recently the Math and Science Department awarded certificates of recognition to Faculty Members Dr. Sahar Saleh (Mathematics) and Dr. Gazi Demir (Science) in honor of their outstanding performance and dedication. Both faculty members began their tenure last fall and have worked tirelessly to advance and support CCQ’s multiplying student body. Additionally, Noor Al-Suwaidi, a CCQ student was also recognized for receiving the highest scores attainable in her class. Taking part in a Distance Education online Math course, Math 1314, presented by education partner the Houston Community College System, she did the best in the class and earned a resounding “A.” Dr. Gholam Pahlavan, Department Chair for the Math and Science Department served as her mentor and tutor.

“We are proud of all of our students and

INTRODUCING THE NEW IT CORNER

I n appreciation of the hard

work of so many different

individuals invested in the

success of CCQ, Vantage Point is

happy to recognize the Instructional

Technology Department (INST) and

their recent efforts to improve

accessibility and convenience for the

Community College of Qatar. Their

efforts (as listed below) constitute

some of the recent work being done

by the many members of the INST

Department. The INST Department is

working with Faculty, Staff, and

Students of CCQ to help promote

awareness for effective teaching

using instructional technologies and

methods that they have implemented

and many major projects, including:

The implementation of Adobe

Creative Suite 6 (Master) enabling

students and faculty to design and

develop amazing artwork, collabo-

rate effectively with others, and

deliver their work virtually to all.

The implementation of Turnitin

Software, which allows faculty to

check students' work for improper

citation or potential plagiarism by

comparing it against continuously

updated databases.

The induction of Interactive

Languages Labs, a software that

allows faculty to manage their

reading and writing assignments,

discussions, lessons, activities,

and feedback.

The INST department will facilitate

the training of staff and faculty in

the areas of Interactive labs, smart

boards, MS Office, Adobe, Email,

and many other applications.

The addition of a specialist

laboratory for the need to educate

and train to help in instructional

technology and interactive

learning.

Supporting students by forming

the Instructional Technology Club,

where students can participate in

training courses, earning them

certificates upon completion. The

club will also organize events and

educational trips for students to

benefit from.

Recently, the Instructional

Technology Club at C-Ring campus

celebrated Qatar’s National Day with

educational activities and awarded

winners with gifts in the presence of

the Dr. Ibrahim Al-Naimi, CCQ’s

President.

It’s that time again. The ELC Second Quarter is almost at an end and that means final exams will be coming soon. Now is the best time for CCQ ELC students to re-assess what they need to do to succeed and begin studying every day. For many of you, it’s not too late to pass your classes. If you study hard enough and take responsibility for yourself, it is possible you can succeed.

The Learning Center, which can be found at both campuses, is available to help. Faculty Tutors, scheduled every day from Sunday to Thursday (primarily from 2p.m. to 4p.m.) are available to assist students on a case-by-case basis. These tutors can help assist you under-stand material that you are struggling with. If you are having a problem in class accepting a difficult subject, consider coming to the Learn-ing Center for assistance. As we are limited to the amount of openings available, it is advisable to request a tutor in advance. This can be done either by sending an e-mail to [email protected] or by visiting the Learning Center. Gregory Twidal, the Learning Center Coordinator, will schedule you an appointment at the earliest convenience.

Gregory is available: Sun/Tues/Thursday @ C-Ring 7:30-3:30pm Mon and Wed @ West Bay 7:30-3:30pm

Visit your campus Learning Center today.

It’s Not Too Late.
