ProgramThis event was intended to provide an introduction of the project to members of the community association and begin to build familiarity and trust between myself (the facilitator) and participants prior to introducing external stakeholders to the workshops. As residents you provide valuable on the ground insight into the day to day life of the community so I selected my questions and exercises to further my understanding of the area.

Warm Upwhat makes the ideal neighbourhood?

Asimplewarmuptogetattendeescreativejuicesflowing, eachKCAmembercreated their own collage using a series of pictures representing housing typology, public space, green space, infrastructure and community.

5 collages were produced that I was then able to use to determine which visuals were utilized the most. Using the reappearance of these images as a measurement I was able to synthesize the collective ideal neighbourhood (pictured on pg 2-3). The larger the photo the more collages the image appeared in,

Neighbourhood Feelings (Brand)

howwouldyoudescribetheKingslandofthefuture?

Using index cards I asked each attendee to write down the adverbs they would use to describe how they wanted the community to feel in the future.

Through documentation and analysis I was able to determine the amount of times an adverb was used this was then transcribedtoawordcloudsoftwareforfinalvisualsummary.Thelargerthewordappearsinthecloudthemoreoccurrences of it’s use.

ProcessEach workshop is intended to build on the next with scenario exercises giving us valuable insight into the possibilities of growth and clarifying the needs and wants of community members. This will culminate in a series of reports summarizing our findingswhichwillallowtheKCAtodevelopaclearvisionfromwhichitengagethe City and outside stakeholders on.

OutcomeHands on experience for the community association in design thinking and collaboration to facilitate the creation of a cohesive vision as well as a working networkofcontactstheKCAcanutilizeforideagenerationandtechnicalexpertise.

Outside StakeholdersMany people play a role in the day to day interests and activity of a community. These outside stakeholders can provide valuable information on unfamiliar situations and viewpoints which can be used going forward to develop strategies and relationships that will help the community thrive.

As a facilitator I view my role as one that provides the framework to create a strong discussion with varying opinions and to stimulate conversation. My hope is that these workshops will be engaging and produce not only useful information fortheKingslandCommunityAssociation, butallowanequitableplatformforallattendees producing useful connections for the future.
