Leeton-Whitton Club Notes At the start of the finals series we were probably

looking at Senior premiership success, but four weeks later It is our game Under 1 s·s tnat nave made club history, becoming the first Crows outfit ever lo make the last day of the season.

At Narrandera last Sunday, the Thirds, after giving Wagga Wagga a 3 goal start, played outstanding team football, holding the Tigers goalless for almost 3 quarters to run out 27 point victors.

The •"lin was founded on a d isciplined, attacking backline and a running midfield, while tha forwards although kicking inaccurately worked hard to ensure a winning score was registered.

Best for Leeton/Whitton was Shane Gross who proved unstoppable across half forward, kicking 1 goal and having a hand in many others, while in

Riverina Football League CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

It is with great pleasure that I welcome all players, coaches, team officials, umpires, spectators , supporters and fellow MVAFA Board Members, to the year 2000 Riverina Football League Grand Final.

Well what a great day we have in sto re, with Coolamon, Ganmain Grong Grong Matong, Wagga Tigers, Griffith, Leeton Whitton and Turvey Park all with a team representing their clubs today. Historians are telling me it has been a long time since we have seen a Grand Final day with six different sides playing.

Congratulations to Coolamon Rovers and Ganmain Grong Grong Matong for making their way in the Grand Final, it will be great to see two bush clubs go hammer and tong for the ultimate prize in Football.

As reported early in the week it has taken 60 years for these two sides to meet again in a Grand Final. As we have come to know encounters between these two sides over decades have been some of the most fierce and hotly contested games of football played. And today the game won't be any different. So may the best side win.

To all the other teams playing in Minor Grade Finals today. Best of luck for a successful day.

Congratulations to Coolamon, Turvey Park and Griffith Netball Clubs for having teams in respective Grand Finals, to Leanne Hall croft and her executive for the support and Co-operation throughout the

Our Miss RFL was taken out by Justine Quilty from Wagga Tigers who I also wish to Congratulate.

Wayne Carroll for coaching the RFL Representative side and his selectors, Russell Durnan (under 18 Coach as well), Graham Doswell, Jim Prentice and Kel Stewart, and their support team Zane Frazer, Luke Ryan and Stewart Winrow as well as all players that made them self available to represent the league.Peter Royle for his efforts during the finals, Garry Buchanan.and his team at AFL ( NSW ACT) for their help during the year.

To Greg Verdon and fellow MVAFA members and administration officers, thank you for your support and guidance in my first year. To Wayne Gardner, all the best with your business.

~Eaitorial The culmination of another successful

Mercantile Mutual Riverina Football League Season reaches it's climax today as the Narrandera Sportsground hosts another gala Grand Final Day. The finals series has been exceptional with some many memorable games and the odd sprinkling of upsets.

In the Preliminary Finals last Sunday we witnessed three tremendous contests with some interesting results. The Wagga Tigers were the minor premiers in both the 1 sts and under 18's but both were defeated and have not made it through to the Premiership decider. The Leeton/ Whitton Crows were certainly an excited bunch after disposing of the Tigers In the Under 18's -their teamwork and positional play was great, they used the ground well and thoroughly deserved the win. The Reserve grade game was a very close one with perennial finalists Turvey Park against the minor premiers - Griffith Swans. The Swans have been the form side all year and needed to make up for an indifferent semi-final disaster. The Swans skipped clear in the second quarter and then had to hold on for dear life as the Bulldogs came charging back in the last quarter - the Swans finally prevailed by six points. The main game had the large crowd roaring from the start as the Ganmain Grong Grong Matong Lions and Wagga Tigers were after a spot in the premiership decider. After an even first half the Lions took the ascendancy compliments of some slick teamwork, a forward line that converted more o f the opportunities on offer and more desperation than the Tigers. Wagga rallied in the last quarter but their inaccuracy was costly and the Lions roared into the Grand Final compliments of an 18 point victory and a committed team effort.

Today we have a classic confrontation to finish the season. The two closest communities in the Riverina Football league will pit their skills against one another In an effort to raise the Premiership Cup aloft at 5.00 pm and savour the moment as the top team for the year 2000 season. The Ganmain Grong Grong Matong Lions and Coolamon Hoppers have not met in a Grand Final since 1940 when the two neighbours clashed in a premiership decider In the old South West League before Ganmain amalgamated. Both clubs are to be commended on their efforts of assembling very competitive teams consisting of mainly local players. The Coolamon side has been a consistent performer all season and under coach Wayne Weidemann have gradually lifted their intensity to peak at the right time. The tremendous tenacity and teamwork displayed in their semi-final blitz against Wagga Tigers will no doubt have them primed for another top-shelf performance today

as they strive to take the premiership cup to Hopperland. The team contains many stars and if they click they will certainly be hard to contain. Lew Roberts and Brendan McKelvie have been in fine form up forward while their defence led by Rod O'Brien and Jarrod Skidmore has been more than adequate in stopping the opposition posting a winning score. They also boast a strong on-ball brigade with Wayne Weidemann leading the charge and capably backed up by Luke Maloney, Matt Hard, Craig Drum, Greg McKelvie and Brett Notte.

The Ganmain Grong Grong Matong Lions have also peaked at the right time and were impressive with the way they out-played the Wagga Tigers last week. Coach Luke Pumpa has been an Integral part of the premiership push and if the Lions roar like last week anything is possible. Scott Hamblin is a key forward who marks and kick accurately, Scott Crozier was back to his brilliant best last woek and Brett Sanson is dangerous up forward. Shaun Rava, Nick Carroll, Doug Bruckner and Chris Kelly lead a fast and skilled following division capable of matching it with anyone in the League and with Luke Pumpa, Christen & Nathan McPherson in dofonce the Lions are worthy grand finalists . The matchups and team tactics, particularly early in the game will be intriguing and the contest right till the final siren is sure to be action packed. Selecting a potential winner is certainly difficult but maybe the Hoppers can win narrowly and make up for the disappointment of last year.

The Reserve grade game is certain to be a tot closer than the contest of a fortnight ago when the Wagga Tigers dominated against the Griffith Swans. Tigers with Gerald Pieper calling the shots on the ground have had a good year and with the Wadley boys Nick Louis and Greg Dea firing are in with a big show of making up for many fruitless attempt at a flag in recent seasons. The Swans bounced back last week and with Michael Duncan, Chris Conlan, Danny Berriman and Simon Speirs showing the way - the Swans are certain to be right in it.

The Under 18 game will kick-start the day on a high note as two very talented young teams play off for the flag. Turvey Park finished the season well and played some top footy to reach the grand final. They have a sprinkling of players back who have played In the senior grades and Grant Bourne, David Clout, Travis Richards, Rod Shaw and Adrian Dowdle have the ability to lead the Bulldogs to another flag. The Leeton/Whitton Crows will contest their first grand final and if they can repeat the excellent efforts of last week they are sure to be well in it. Dallas Stott, Toby Conroy, Shane Gross and Craig Purtill are in top form and the Crows are set to fly high today.

Best of luck to all the teams contesting the Grand Finals today in both football and netball. Well done to the MVAFA Board on another great season of entertainment - I hope everyone has an enjoyable day at the Narrandera Sportsground

# Grand Final Day again - and a tremendous spread of clubs represented. Good Luck to all the footballers and netballers involved in the various games. Merk reckons we are in for some tremendous entertainment - enjoy your day!!!

# Merk reckons the Farrer League season was an absolute pearler for an eight club competition. The only 'dampener on the whole year was the weather and ground conditions on Grand Final day. We certainly cannot influence '01 Huey but it really rammed home the obvious fact that WAGGA WAGGA THE CITY OF GOOD SPORTS HAS NOT GOT A DECENT GROUND TO CATER FOR THE NEEDS OF AN MAJOR AUSSIE RULES FIXTURE. Merk reckons that you can have as may surveys & talk fests & buck passing etc as you like but Merk will be pushing up daisies before anything eventuates. It's not use complaining - lord knows no one listens - just hop in the car and slip over to Narrandera and enjoy the ambience of the Sportsground. Besides there are no more bikkies left in the Council's Tin - end of story - or is it? Maybe Wagga Wagga had more rain than Narrandera last week but the d ifference in ground conditions was akin to being in another State.

# THANKYOU to all the club scribes and businesses who advertised in the "Footy Record" and to Gary and the staff at the Oxford Printery. Thanks also to The Daily Advertiser and Rebecca Rudd for the constant supply of photos which were used in the various issues.

# Vale to Association Secretary Wayne Gardner and good luck with the "Burgers on Kincaid" eat up joint. Merk reckons he'll do O K if he only samples the burgers and leaves the chips and sangers alone!!!

# Things have been "Rockin" at The Rock since Saturday night - well done to Steve Woods and both teams • they missed out last year and made up for it with a double dose of premiership celebration which will, no doubt, last for a few more days yet. Well done also to Steve Carroll and the Marrar boys who battled hard In the finals and deserved their spot in the decider.

# All clubs are reminded that they have been issued with survey paper concerning relevant football matters and are asked to consider the various issues carefully. The survey MUST be returned by October 4th and a further meeting will be convened to discuss the issues on October 22nd.

# The "Kick For Cash" is definitely a goer! ! The competition will run at the half-time interval on Grand Final day today. The Kick for Cash is open to anyone who fancies their chances of kicking the Sherrin into a 44 gallon drum from 40 metres. To enter all you have to do is fill in an official entry form from the 'Footy Record' and place it in the barrel at the Secretary's Office by halftime in the reserve grade game. The prize for the first person to kick it into the tin is $1000 so hop to it!!!!!!

Leeton-Whitton Notes (cont. from page 5)

defence James Douglas was outstanding, showing fantastic judgement and discipline throughout.

In the midfield Toby Conroy, Joel Heaslip and Dallas Stott were the architects of the victory, giving the Crows first use of the football out of the centre, while in the forward line Matt Lang worked hard under trying conditions, and Jason Wells bobbed up to kick three important goals.

So now to today and perhaps the most exciting day of our players young careers. Four more quarters of dedicated football to be played before the ecstasy of premiership success. I'm sure a huge Crows contingent will be on hand to cheer on the boys.

Congratulations to Peter Sheehan and his dedicated band of helpers who have helped to get the team this far. It is indeed the most taxing job in the club when you consider the hours U 18's team play at, often leaving Leeton at 7 .30 am. and not returning before the evening equivalent for away games. You definitely deserve any accolades that come your way.

Don't forget the Club has the job of all catering today, so please slip around to one of the outlets and inquire as to how you can help.

The Club's Presentation Night will be held on Friday September 22nd. Bookings to Lena Henman by Wednesday 20th. All players and supporters are urged to attend and help celebrate a reasonably successful season.

Great to see six different teams in Grand Finals today, should be a huge crowd .. .. may the best teams win.

See you all back at the Wade Sports Club this evening for hopefully a celebratory drink. Go the Under 1B's.

Wagga Club Notes Well that day in September has arrived - today

we are represented by our Seconds - they have worked hard for this opportunity so let"s get right behind them in support and encourage and urge them on to victory. Congratulations to all the players in the Two's - including those guys who have missed out on selection today - the Club and supporters are very proud of your efforts this year!

Unfortunately last week the 18's and Firsts bowed out of Premiership contention. Well done to all the boys in both teams - we know you all gave it your best shot on the dayl

Congratulations to Stephen Priest on his 200th game with the club last week. Steve has been a huge contributor to Wagga Tigers - a real stalwart - a 110% clubperson - a role model to the younger Tigers coming through the ranks. Well done Priesty!

the C Grade netballers went down in a thriller last week as well. Congratulations to the Under 14's - Premiers for 2000. The 10"s went down in the Consolation final.

Thank you to all Tiger Sponsors for this year -to all the supporters, President Gerry and his committee, all helpers and Football and Netball Coaches .. .. for being a part of a great club.

Our Presentation Night is on Friday 13th

Griffith Club Notes Well it's that one day in September that we all

want to take part in , the Grand Final. After a very long week leading up to the Preliminary Final, the Reserves came out and showed their true colours, over a very determined Turvey side. II was a tough battle and a very exciting finish having our supporters on edge right to the last minute. On the field it was a splash of old & new, with Chris Conlan, Shane Ruyg and Greg Dreyer leading the old erigade, while David Dunn, Rodney & Michael Duncan got the youngsters fired up.

Peter "B 1" Hunt and Luke "82" Irons never stopped tackling all day, while Trent "Grumpy· Bradley ran all day. Everyone worked hard and this week they will all have to work even harder again to overcome the Tigers, who no doubt will have the weight of Wagga on them after GGGM eliminating their First Grade. Goodluck to Adrian and his team, let's bring that cup home!II

Also don't forget our A Grade netballer's will be in for a real "ding dong" of a game against Coolamon. Goodluck girls let's win and enjoy the celebrations.

Congratulations to Philip Rowston on winning the Jim Quinn Medal against some much fancied opponents, well done Rowd.

Everyone is invited back to the Exies for a drink. GOODLUCK ALL, Let's bring it home!!! GO

COOLAMON f, ll1ISS II f) ,, ,, I~ IlS Hoppers' Club Notes

The pumping heart of country towns is the football team

The game provides a pressure valve, a chance to yell and scream

The golden gifts it grants our youth can set them up for life

An outlet for their youthful zest, that keeps them free from strife

And crucial too for older folk. for there they can unwind

And join the battle on the field , (if only in the mind)

It is our one uniting link, our common sense of worth

And epic victories make us feel like Emperors of the earth

But finals are our special days, and if the flag is won

The memories last forever as our one day in the sun

A premiership decider is a huge, demanding test

So grit the teeth and fight like hell and play like men possessed

And remember who you're playing for as you take the field

Your coach and family and your mates, so fight and never yield

And also, as you face the foe for glory and renown

You're playing too for Coolamon, our place, our home, our town

Yes , it's a great day for the town of Coolamon. The Junior and B Grade netballers joined the A's and C's in the Grand Final with resounding wins last week. It's a mighty effort to have all four teams In the Grand Finals and we wish them all the best.

Commiserations to the Under t O's who were pipped by Turvey Park last week and hearty congratulations to Moonie and his talented bunch of unbeaten Under 12's who sealed the town's first premiership this century on Sunday.

To Weed and his boys who represent the town today: It's the one we've been waiting for - not just for twelve months but for seventeen unfulfilled years.

It's time to fill the pages with your glorious youth.

It's time for a Coolamon PREMIERSHIP

President's Message Congratulations to the all the teams

representing Coolamon in both netball and football today. The netballers have certainly had a great year and will contest each of the four divisions to be decided on this Grand Final day.

Thankyou to the Ladies Auxiliary and the Committee for once again making the season 2000 another successful one. Special thanks to Tom Goss, Peter Bartholomew, Pam Parr, Robbie and Colleen Garrett for services rendered throughout the year.

Well done to Wayne Weidemann on another excellent coaching job and achieving the goal of playing in a Grand Final. Last year we were in the same position and came home empty handed - Good Luck to all the players today -we must go t n and take the next step - go out and make it happen! Go the Mighty Hoppers!II

Lions' Club Notes

After a slow start we gradually put it together to have a good win over the Wagga Tigers. In a great team effort, Scott Crozier had a top game to win the Sports Club Award, Troy Lenon did likewise to win the Webbers Baker Towel Award, with David Logan winning the Wagga First Aird Mug and Christen McPherson earning himself the Wagga Mutual Credit Union award. Miltons Gear Voting 3 Scott Crozier, 2 Troy Lenon and 1 David Logan. The hard work done by Nathan McPherson, Nick Carroll , Ben Sullivan and Chris Kelly is worthy of a mention.

Congratulations to Scott Hamblin and Scott Crozier for polling well in the Quinn Medal Count and also to Sue Hatty for being Runnerup in the Miss RFL. Congratulations to Jason and Usa Linsell on the arrival of a little footballer.

The Clubs' Best & Fairest Count is on next Friday night at the Sports Club at 7.30 p.m. The DA's editorial last Monday was spot on and a pat on the back for a top article.

Today is the big one we have been waiting for all the year and we all know what second prize is. Best of luck to all teams competing in the football and netball Grand Finals.

RFL LADIES NETBALL REPORTS AFL NETBALL PRESIDENT

The 2000 season is almost over. We have had a very successful season both on and off the netball couns. A huge thankyou must go to the other executives, without the help and suppon of these ladies my job would not have been nearly as easy to deal with. So to Angela Drum, Kate Carroll, Belinda McKinley and Sheree Rudd I thank you very much.

Congratulations to Griffith and EWK for their huge effons to become a pan of our league once again. To all the girls who took out our respective Best & Fairest awards, well done. Special thanks and congratulations to Michelle Burden and the 12 girls who represented the RFL in the State League competition. Excellent work by all involved, the girls took out the series in Division 2 defeating Hume League in quite convincing form. RFL was also successful in defeating Farrer League in both Under 17's and Seniors in the annual Gala Day which was hosted by the MVAFA.

Good luck to a ll teams, both football and netball who are playing in the Grand Finals this week and we look forward to seeing you all next year.

Leanne Hallcroft RFL Netball President

COOL.AMON NETBALL

What a year! Every person associated with the Coolamon Netball Club would have to be proud of themselves, wilh the Club having its mots successful year since it began in the RFL.

Finishing minor premiers in C Grade was definitely a highlight, as well as the other three grades, A, B and Juniors all being placed second on the ladder at the conclusion of the season.

The Hoppers have gone from strength to strength over the past two years and at the serious end of the season (finals) everything seems to be shaping up well. Congratulations to the club's Best and Fairest winners, Rebecca Rudd (A Grade). Alex Moses (B Grade, Lycinda Dean (C Grade) and Jess Roberts (Juniors).

Cootamon always has a strong representation at the annual League Netball Vote count night and this year the club was rewarded with three best and fairest winners. First ii was Kristen McKenzie taking out the junior title. followed by Kylie Parr in C Grade and Alex Moses in B Grade, Amanda Donohue was also a stand out in A Grade finishing with the Runner-up Trophy.

Also a special mention to Sarah Roberts. Amanda Donohue and Rebecca Rudd on representing Coolamon in the RFL netball State League team which took out the division two title.

The trio played imponant roles in the State League team and should be congratulated on their efforts. Now ij is time to take out the prize in every grade, and no doubt all netballers tied up in the grand finals will endeavour to put in 1 00 percent to see the Green and White flags flying high.

EAST WAGGA NETBALL

Firstly I would like to congratulate all the teams that made the finals in both football and netball. Well we made it back into the competition after going into remission late last year. I would sincerely like to thank all the girls who pulled together and made two teams that took the court every week, losing isn't much fun but we hung in there right up to the completion of the season. so thank you very much girls and a big pat on the back.

Thanks also goes to the people who help make the game go ahead, that is scorers and umpires, my heartfelt thanks goes to Karen Wild, Naomi Louttit and Debbie Hillier. Our President of both the football and netball, Mark "Mully" Mullen deserves a big thanks also.

Not much else can be said except that every girl who stepped on the coun was sure to have a good time and confidently saying it happened more times than not.

Congratulations on hanging in there and let's look to a bigger brighter season in 2001 .

Cheers Nicole McPherson EWK Football/Netball Club

A Grade finished just out of the five, but improved significantly on their pertormance from the previous year to notch up six wins for the season.

The Club also had two girls involved in the successful State League side. Congr ats to Rachael Hamblin and Tania Lennon.

Another positive for the C lub was the incorporation of Notta under the GGGM banner. With over 40 young netballers registered, the future looks promising for the club.

Off the field. saw a number of changes in the club executive and coaching staff. With last years three members of the executive standing down. Kyhe Lander, Kerrilee Logan and Wendy Wood took up the vacant positions. A fourth positiOn on

the executive was also created and successfully filled by Tracey Steele to help share the workload.

Season 2000 also saw new coaches for each grade. Natasha Hare and Emma Carroll took on the A Grade, whilst Lisa Linsell and Natasha Hare took on B Grade. Other A Grades to take up the coaching challenge were Carlie Wood and Shanna Brill in C Grade and Rachael Hamblin in Juniors. It seems ii you wanted to coach A or B Grade you had to be pregnant!

In July we had 16 netballers take part in an un:ipiring clinic. It was encouraging to see the level of interest on the night and in the weeks following. The evening served to clarify numerous rules and boost everyone's confidence.

lf'.!e finished the season on a successful note, hosting the l eague Vote Count.

LEETON NETBALL

Firstly, a huge thank you to the new RFL Netball Executive for their efforts throughout the season 2000. The AV Jennings netball competition was once again a huge success . It was also very p lea~ing to see that Griffith and East Wagga Koonngal re-entered the competition.

The 2000 season has once again been a successful one for both the Netball and Football clubs. In netball, C Grade and Juniors made the finals, whilst the football Club was well represented by all grades.

This season a new committee was elected and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them personally for all their hard work during the season. A special mention must go to Angela Wakeman for her tireless fundraising efforts and Rachal Harrison for once again publicising our results in the local paper. All o f the committee's help throughout the season was greatly appreciated by myself.

1'.d also like to tha~k the girls who were will ing to give up thetr own time and expertise to coach and train our netballers. B Grade Kim Brown C Grade Amy Connellan and Juniors Rachal Harrison. These teams were very competitive during the season and learnt a lot from their respective coaches.

Our new all weather netball court was in use for the first time and proved to be a success. I'm sure all teams enjoyed playing on this surface and will continue to do so for many years to come.

To our generous sponsors, thank you for your support throughout the year. Sponsorship included our major sponsors and the sponsors of our weekly

awards. Without your generosity our netball club would find it hard to operate from week to week.

Finally to all those teams that are playing in the finals congratulations and good luck for the rest of the season. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the year and next year can be just as successful.

NARRANDERA NETBALL

This season has proven a difficult one for our Club as_we struggled for numbers to fill our A,B,C and Junior teams. However we made it only having to forfeit one game in C Grade.

Whilst we were competitive in all grades only our Juniors were successful in being Minor Premiers. Unfortunately we were eliminated in the Preliminary Final by Coolamon in a well deserved win. We wish all clubs in the Grand Final great games and look forward to a high standard of competition next season.

TIGERS NETBALL

Congratulations to all people involved in our club for a wonderful season of netball.

This year we managed to field 3 teams In the finals which is a great effort. Although we didn't manage to make it to the Grand Final we did put 1n a huge effort. at this time special thanks must go to our team coaches for their dedication and commitment. Nothing would be achieved without their hard work, so thank you to Bernadette Priest, Justine Quilty, Karen Oke and Melissa Kelhear.

Another thankyou must go to all the people who support our netball club throughout the year. You know who you are, and we say thanks. Thankyou also to the Pankhurst family and Cashies for their kind donation to Wagga Tigers Netball.

Congratulations must go to our own Miss RFL 2000, Justine Quilty. Well done Justine, you have done our whole club proud.

Congratulations to all our Best and Fairest winners, especially Karen Oke, who was awarded joint runner up B Grade B&F in the League. Well done to all the girls on a great year. See you all again in 2001 !

TURVEY PARK NETBALL

It's been another successful year at the Turvey Park Netball Club. We've once again had fantastic numbers all year which is what keeps a club as successful as ours.

For the fifth consecutive we have taken out the Club Championship which shows the strength and depth of all four Grades. We have all four teams in finals once again so let's hope we can bring home as many Premierships to the Club.

Thanks again to Debbie Flanigan for taking on the coaching role for both A and B Grade this year, with both teams finishing on top to show what a great job she has done. A great job also was done by Michelle Kelly and Kylie & Courtney O'Connor for coaching C Grade and Juniors respectively.

Good luck to all teams in finals this year and let's hope for another strong and successful competition in 2001 .
