1 ~~PRINCIPAL’S REPORT~~ Principal: Mrs M Crelley Issue No: 20 Term: 4 Monday 11 th December, 2017 Leeton High School honoured its award winners at our annual Presentation Night held last Thursday evening. The presentations and performances showcased during the evening represented much of what makes Leeton High School such a wonderful and exciting place to be. I would like to congratulate again, all our students who received academic, sporting, cultural or citizenship awards and for their contributions to our school and community. I feel it also fair to acknowledge the students who did not receive a particular award on Thursday evening but who regularly make fantastic, positive additions to our school. Our achievements are the products of the collaborative efforts between staff, students, parents and carers and our community and I take the opportunity in this year’s final newsletter, to acknowledge and thank individuals, families, employers, mentors and organisations who have supported our school during the year allowing us to experience success across many areas. I thank all of our teaching, support and office staff who have invested so much of themselves and their great expertise to fulfil our vision for the benefit of our school community. The success of our Careers Department with the Western Riverina Expo, WIN program, Get Set mentoring program and You Go Girl! initiative, especially designed for our Year 9 and 10 girls, has put Leeton High School in the spotlight in a very favourable way and testifies to the strong relationships and support our talented and driven staff have fostered within the community, across the Riverina and in some cases across NSW. Likewise, I would also like to applaud our stellar Creative and Performing Arts team who continue to lift the bar at every turn. The unbelievable energy and effort this crew puts into our students, in conjunction with the families who support us in return, is really awe inspiring and the results are seen in the amount of interest and talent exhibited by our students in tremendous productions such as Legally Blonde Junior and MADD Night. Thank you to our wonderful P&C who have tirelessly supported our school with their honest feedback, generous donations and fundraising. The support we receive from this dedicated group of parents is invaluable and much appreciated. Their financial support this year amongst other things has included an investment in the new sprinkler system on our oval and a significant contribution to the installation of a covered walkway linking the old building to the main block which will commence next year. Again, thank you to the P&C for their enormous contribution to improving our learning environment. Parents and caregivers, I thank you for your support and for giving us the opportunity to work with you to educate your children. We appreciate your faith in us to develop your boys and girls into outstanding young men and women. I extend to all members of our school community and the Leeton Community of Public Schools my very best wishes for a wonderful Christmas and a safe holiday. I look forward to working with you all in 2018. Years 7, 11 and 12 return to school on Tuesday 30 th January 2018 and Years 8, 9 and 10 on Wednesday 31 st January 2018. MADD Night 2017 MADD Night was an incredible success with 27 acts lighting up the stage last Friday Night. The talent that pours out of our school is amazing. There is nothing our students cannot do! The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and thank you to all the individual and group performers who made the evening such a mammoth success. Thank you to Mrs Van den Heuvel, Mrs Goman, Miss Phillips, Mr DiSalvia and the backstage and lighting crews for the exceptional efforts in organising and running such a great evening. Thanks to the community for supporting this event and we look forward to MADD Night 2018. Secondary Learning Strategy (2LS) We continue our whole school literacy focus through 2LS to equip all students with powerful learning skills. 2LS helps our students better their reading and comprehension of texts by developing skills in Summarising, Visualising, Predicting, Questioning, Making-Connection, Self-Monitoring and Inferring (known as the Super 7). Alongside Summarising as a key Super 7 reading and comprehension strategy we add Visualising as a focus skill that is extremely useful across all learning areas. When authors write, they use words to describe what they are trying to share with the audience. The words make a picture in the mind. Creating a picture in our mind or drawing the picture on paper can help us understand what we are reading, viewing or hearing. This strategy is called visualising.

Leeton High School recognises and values the importance of communication between home and school. If you have any questions on any issue, please do not hesitate to call us on 69532122. A message from Careers Coordinator Tania Speer I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Leeton High School for providing me with

some of the best days of my working life over the past two years. It has been a privilege and an

absolute delight to work along the students at Leeton High School. My particular focus has been on

Year 10, providing them with opportunities that will assist them with career choices and preparing

them for the world of work. It has been very humbling to see them grow, focus, re-engage at school

and set goals for their future and I look forward to following their journeys.

Careers Central is blessed to have Ms Brittany Becker leading Leeton High Careers into the future, she

is a dedicated, supportive, enthusiastic and motivated Careers Advisor.
