I have been looking into the Ethanol in petrol issue that seems to be of great concernfor people like us that run classic vehicles

Petrol suppliers in the UK Esso BP Total Jet Shell etc use Ethanol in 95 octanefuel but not in 98 octane fuel At the moment I donrsquot know about the other countriesbut I would guess that since these companies are in nearly every country in theworld the same would apply

So check with your petrol companies and see if the 98 octane has ethanol in themix if it does not then that should be the fuel to use in classic vehicles such as theCavalcade

Did anyone spot the error in the last publication

Look at the date it should have read March 2015 not January 2015

EZS Kompakt Sidecar Installation ToCavalcade 1986 - Episode 2

Paint jobPaint job of the sidecar was apain Literally My painterthought that as the surface was insuch good condition it may beenough just to use some finesanding to prepare the surfaceand then paint the final colorUnfortunately the poly carbonateplastic contains some oils whichthe paint solvent surfaced Youcan see the cracking results on thepicture

There was no option than redothe sanding and paint the bodywith epoxy primer which closesthe surface so that no greasybreathing could happen anymoreThat was good and Iacutem reallyhappy with the results

After the paint job was done Iwanted to attach some tapes tofool the audience to think thatthis sidecar would be originalequipment of my Cade Tapeswere designed by Hart-Tapes(wwwhart-tapescom) whohas now vector-graphic files ofCavalcade text and the rideremblem if anyone of youwould feel a need

The bracketsSidecar installation requiredfour brackets to be made andone steering damper installa-tion I had to create those bymyself as the EZS sidecar com-pany had never installed one toa Cade As I visited the factory

during last yearrsquos EuropeanCade Raid in Holland I prom-ised to provide drawings forthem to use Here Iacutell sharethree first with you The restwill follow in the final episodeof this sidecar-trilogy

I managed to create those in away that I did not damage anyof the original fairing Only re-quired thing was to removefront right fairing side ventila-tion chrome As mine was dou-ble height I have alreadyrequested the top part from Al-len King I believe I can fit it innicely here

Test driveSetting the toe in was a bit tricky andI believe I need to adjust it whendoing test drives There should beabout 2 degrees toe in (about 15 cmto 4 cm in) for the sidecar wheelassignment I did not have any fancytools for the setting so I arranged afollowing setup To level the sidecarwhile driver on the bike I added apair of magnetic water levelers (tinyyellow ones on the picture) One tothe sidecar and one to the bike It hasbeen said that the sidecar should belevel on normal driving conditionswhich to me means only driver onboard

First test drive was not a pleasure Ihad way too much toe in and the bikeacted like driving in very slipperyconditions

After some adjustment I managed toget it ride pretty nicely and straightAt the test drive I had not yet gotnew steering shock absorber so therewas none installed Driving about 30

kmh I lightened my grip not com-pletely letting go and the front wheelstarted wobbling very badly immedi-ately Now I know why the shockabsorber is required

After all Iacutem quite happy for the re-sult but I canceled our family trip toECR Norway due to lack of experi-ence how to drive with a sidecar Ithought that it is better to take shorttrips in Finland to get the hang of itMaybe next year into LuxembourgOn the last episode hopefully in thenext issue of Cavalier youacutell hearabout the fourth bracket and final in-stallations

As the old saying goes ldquoif you canrsquotbeat em ndash copy em then beat em soHarley-Davidson incorporated theengine forks and shaft drive designexactly from the BMW designresulting in the XA - a superiormachine to any American motorcyclesmanufactured at the time

Astonishingly similar looking to theBMW R71 its sealed shaft drive andtelescoping forks were well-suited tocondition in the North African theatrewhere the Army demanded a bike thatcould withstand the dust and grit thatconstantly invaded vehiclecomponents However by the time oftheir release the Jeep had become thequick transport vehicle of choice by themilitary and the XArsquos were never evendeployed

So what happened to all thoseawesome war Harleyrsquos The storygoes that huge numbers ofdemobilized troops enamoured withthe bikes they saw in theatre boughtcheap military surplus WLAs afterreturning home Of course all thoseawkward looking racks bags andwindshields were no longer necessaryand were chopped off the bikesgiving birth to the term ldquochopperand the eventual rise of biker culturein the 1950rsquos And because so manyWLArsquos were shipped to our Sovietallies as a part of the war effort to thisday Russia remains a source ofthousands of original WLA parts forAmerican restorations

Clutch SlipBy Classic Cats 2

So I thought I would pass on an incident that happened the other dayto me in hopes that it saves someone from larger problems Afterwork I jumped on the Cade as usual but since it was a cooler day Idid use the choke lever On the way home the clutch was definitelyslipping as I accelerated up to 55 mph So I backed off on theacceleration and cruised for a few minutes tried it again and theclutch slipped again

Well arriving home I was pondering the clutch spring swap anddecided to look everything over closely once more As I examinedthe clutch master and lever I noticed that the switch pod had rotated(from the force of using the choke lever) and the wiring bracket onthe back side of the switch pod was actually holding the clutch leverin about 14 inch This was enough to make the clutch slip underacceleration Just like you would expect if you partially pulled inyour clutch as you gave it the gas at highway speed

So the fix was to rotate the pod back forward and release the wireguide from holding in on the clutch lever A quick road test revealedthat the spring swap was not needed as the clutch was completelynormal once the interfering bracket was rotated out of the wayCheck it first if your clutch just suddenly slips one day

I know that most people in world will bescratching their heads by the term threewheeler You will probabily think ofTrike bubble car or motorcycle andsidecare Well in the UK a three wheeleris a type of car and has the name suggestsit has three wheels

Now in the 50rsquos there were two makes ofthree wheelers both were rear wheeldrive one was called a Bond The otherwas called the Reliant they both had onewheel in the centre at the front and twowheels at the back Reliant had beenmaking three wheelers since the 1930sand Bond from 1949 neither are madeany more

The first three wheeler that Ronnie and Iowned was a blue Regal van 700ccengine witha full gearbox When threewheelers were first introduced they hadmotorcycle engines in them that you had

to kick start inside the enginecomartment but by the 1960s if theweight of the vehicle was less than 8 cwtthey could be driven on a motorcyclelicense and have a reverse gear TheRegal has all Reliants are rear wheel drive

This cost pound300 and my uncle and oldestbrother paid the deposit as a loan to meand I paid the rest

We had this for nearly 9 months butdecided to buy a new Reliant Robin with a750 cc engine The only real change fromthe Regal was the shape of the body thebody was more rounded on the corners

Then in January 1976 we decided that wewere going back on two wheels andtraded the Reliant for a GT500 Suzukitwin Now this was the first big bike thatwe had We bought it because two of our

The GS750 when first launched onlyhad one disc break on the front but bythe begining of 1977 Suzuki had decidedto go with two disc on the front afterfeed back from test riders Ours wasthe later model

This bike took us all over England andnever had to do any work on it exceptservicing and changing the tyres

In 1978 a friend of mine asked me if Iwould be interested in doing mobilediscos Fine I said but I donrsquot have a vanfor the gear So after a disussion withRonnie we bought our third threewheeler van but this time kept theGS750E as our main transport

You would be surprised at how muchgear you can pack into one of thesethree wheelers When you think ofwhat you need to do a disco speakersdecks at least a 1000 records Lightboxes we were the first disco to haverythm light boxes designed by myselfdeck stands microphone stand The listgoes on

friends had the GT750 kettle WaterBuffalo in the USA But I wasnrsquot sure if Icould handle the weight Seems ridiculousnow when we are on a 800lb Cavalcade

Now on the GT500 you either had totravel below 30 mph or above 90 mphotherwise inbetween these speeds yourfeet vibrated off the foot pegs or you gotoff the bike with your all body still shaking

Sixteen months later we decided that weneeded a different bike so we ordered aTriump Trident Triple the T140 from ourlocal dealer Two months later we weretold the last Triumph had left the factoryand we would not be getting it

In the previous year 1976 Suzuki hadlaunched their first 4 stroke the GS750This was the bike that we chose afterreading all test rides

What a brilliant bike that was It was fasterthan the Kwacker Z1000 I know becausemy mate could not keep up with me on hisin the bends or the straights The brakeswere the best at that time and with a topspeed of 127 mph they had to be

The learning curve part V111

January of 2014 began the way Januaryusually does in Northern Illinoishellip Itarrived bundled up in gray skies andbegan dumping snow hither and yonwith careless abandon The wind flewin from the Siberian arctic howling likea pack of wolves The mercuryretreated downward until it reachedminus double digits Deep driftsobscured the landscape ndash and evenblocked some ground floor windowsand doors A fleet of county snowplows charged into the fray pushingback the heavy snow accumulation andpreventing residents from driving ondangerous streets by barricading the endof our driveways and alleys with 5 footberms Churches canceled servicesschools closed stores werenrsquot open forbusiness Local authorities urgedeveryone to stay at home except foremergency workers

James and I are resigned to this dreadfulweather We spend the 36 weeks ofincarceration during January watchingour DVD sets of Midsomer MurdersPoirot and Inspector Morse ndash poppingin a Doc Martin to lift our spirits onreally grim days We also while awaythe hours calculating planning andchecking prices to find a way to get the

vacation we want using only thevacation money wersquove saved Dueto a stringent budget and frugalChristmas in 2013 we haddeposited a respectable amount intothat fund This surprised us in viewof our differing opinions as to whatconstitutes stringency and frugalityJames defines it as cutting our utilitycosts to the bone ie not runningthe air conditioner or furnace unlessdeath by heat prostration orhypothermia is imminent ndash andavoiding excessive use of lamps andoverhead lighting by learning toread in the dark I define it as notoverdrawing the checking accountor exceeding the spending limit onour credit cards

Despite these opposing philosophieson economizing the perpetual giveand take of married life eventuallymoves us to the middle where wedevise a savings plan which suits usboth The amount we carve fromthe budget varies year to year - butthis time we had money to spareDelighted with such unaccustomedwealth we portioned it out to coverseveral trips ndash deciding we wouldvisit my mom and dad go to a class

reunion meet up with friends at a resortfor several days and ndash of course ndashattend the entire week of the 2014 CadeRaid

During the following months Jamesplanned the best way to get where wewere going and made reservations Inotified everyone involved as to whenand where to expect our arrival ndash andgave the backyard neighbors a scheduleof the pending trips They take care ofour place when wersquore not home cut thegrass fill the birdbath water theflowers and sic their dogs on anyonehanging about We return the favorwhen theyrsquore away We have no dogsto attack suspicious strangers pokingaround their premises ndash but LennyColleen and I agree that the sight ofJames charging toward them waving aone iron club above his head like asamurai sword will have the sameeffect on uninvited guests By the endof May our bags were packed mail andnewspaper deliveries suspended andcountdown had commenced for the firsttrip We were leaving June 4th Themorning of June 2nd I woke up andcouldnrsquot see

With no warning the retina in my righteye had detached Turns out this isserious requiring immediate surgeryTo make matters worse the vision inmy left eye was compromised by aninfection when I was two years oldBack then the best treatment was boric

acid drops which did cure theinfection - but scar tissue formed onthe macula during healing whichobscured most of the sight in thateye Medical science hasnrsquot yetdiscovered a treatment or surgicalprocedure to remove old scars onthe macula ndash so when the retina onthe right side detached I was almosttotally blind

Canceling the visit with my parentswas distressing Missing the classreunion was a let-down Scrappingthe resort trip with Michael and Gailwas disappointing Then ndash in notime at all ndash the date for the 2014Cade Raid was a couple weeksaway However I was still in therecovery period from the third eyesurgery ndash operations one and twonot having been successful ndash soJames said we had no choice Wecouldnrsquot go to the bike rally eitherThere was the risk I might developanother anomaly and damage mybeleaguered eye before we couldrush back to the doctor It was ahard decision to accept Both of ushad absolutely counted on goingBut it wasnrsquot meant to be

Irsquom still in a holding pattern ndashseeing the retinologist in Chicagoregularly He says to keep the faiththat wersquore running the last lap of therace At the next visit hersquos givingme an injection sticking the needleright through the eyeball which

will clear up the distortion in my vision and improve my depth perception WellI certainly hope so James is taking the doctor at his word and has filled out theform and made reservations for us to attend the 2015 East Coast Cade Raid inWaverly Ohio in September The Lord willing wersquoll make it

Sohellip ride safely ndash and whenever possible The opportunity and ability to hopon your Cavalcade and aim it toward the horizon can vanish in a blink Theseclassic touring bikes have given us many splendid memories ndash and continuedoing so As Cade owners wersquove done our part ndash repairing restoring andsalvaging a sizable number of them We can only hope the generation whoinherits or buys these machines after wersquore gone will treasure them as we dohellipand that far into the future Cavalcades will still be running ndash swift and sure -carrying riders all around the world on a multitude of highways byways andtrails into unknown adventures of the heart

PS As for that heap of cash we had saved for vacationhellip it was put to gooduse Every penny was spent on medical deductibles co-payments andmiscellaneous hospital expenses (Photos below of me and James)

Team Suzuki Press Office ndash June 27Team SUZUKI ECSTAR riders Aleix Espargarograve and Maverick Vintildealesraced to ninth and 10th places respectively in todayrsquos eighth round of theMotoGPtrade World Championship at the TT Circuit of Assen in TheNetherlands

Although the start to the weekend was not easy for both Spaniards withsome difficulties in finding a good set-up yesterdayrsquos qualifying provedpositive with Espargarograve in second and Vintildeales ninth Today both foughthard in the middle of the pack struggled to find clean lines but finallymanaged to gain a positive result that gives them points in theChampionship as well as important feedback to the Team for futuredevelopment

Satoru Terada ndash Project LeaderldquoThis has been a pretty hard race for us we got a very positive result inqualifying with Aleix in second place but we couldnrsquot turn this into a goodresult in the race Assen is a very demanding circuit in terms of engineperformance and we lack in acceleration This prevented us from beingcompetitive with the top riders and both Espargaro and Vintildeales had tostruggle in the middle of the pack Acceleration is our weak point at themoment and we will now be working hard to fill this gap I hope that thenext round at Sachsenring will be easier for us since it requires a lot ofhandling and cornering which are the strong-points of our GSX-RR Weare constantly-developing the machine we knew it would be a hard pathbut we are keeping very positive for the futurerdquo

Aleix Espargaro 12th Suzuki ndash 38ldquoThis race was pretty frustrating we still suffer in acceleration and thiswas a problem at such a tight circuit like Assen At the very beginning Ilost many positions and then I had to fight in the middle of the pack to becompetitive Braking and cornering is pretty easy with the good chassiswe have but when it comes to acceleration everything gets harder andharder I tried to push from the early laps but then in the middle of therace I knew it was impossible to fight for the top and I concentrated onearning the points For sure we can do better but itrsquos also true that thisweekend was hard from the beginning but we managed to get secondplace in qualifying and a positive race result so we must be proud of thisI hope in Sachsenring we will be able to show the big potential that wehaverdquo

Maverick Vintildeales 9th Suzuki - 52ldquoDespite the result on the timesheets I think this was probably one ofmy best races so far In Catalunya a lot of riders in front of me crashedwhile here in Assen it was a real race This circuit is stop-and-go withbig acceleration from first-to-sixth gear and we know that we sufferwhen it comes to absolute power The positive thing is that my pacewas good and I got closer to the top riders when it comes to handlingbraking and changes of direction For sure we still need to improve thequalifying to avoid always being in the middle pack If I could make myown lines Irsquom sure I would get better results We are still working ondevelopment but Sachsenring will be a more-friendly track for us soletrsquos hope for further improvementsrdquo

Hints And TipsLED BULBS

RANDY HICKMAN Im planning on replacing my light bar bulbs withLEDs I looked on Superbrite LEDs and I think the ones I need to order arethe BA9 bulbs What colour should I order for the light bar

JAY Order the same colour as the lens it will illuminate (red for red amberfor amber etc

DAN KUEPKER I replaced all of mine with those in all three bikes Use thered ones for any light with a red lens and an amber bulb for any light with anamber lens

Have had them installed for quite a while and it really takes a load off theelectrical system

RANDY Am I correct about the BA9 being the correct size

DAN I am pretty sure that is the correct bulb They have 4 LEDrsquos in eachbulb assembly and come in red amber and several other colours I did haveto add a second gasket on some of my older marker lights because the LEDrsquosare just a little taller and may contact the inside of the lens

I have them in my trunk lamp sets my fork lamps my saddle bag trim mountedlamps as well as the stock bumper mounted lamps Super Bright is great todeal with and they ship really fast

JAY To solve the hitting the lens issue you can just sand a little off the endof the LEDrsquos Wont hurt them and will actually cause them to disperse thelight better

Op speciaal verzoek van mijn kennis Henk Bierman cq ter gelegenheid van de SCCNL(Suzuki Cavalcade club Nederland) raid 2011 naar Engeland heb ik zijn SuzukiCavalcade getekent en op de spiegel gegraveerd

De spiegel past precies in de spiegelhouder in de topkoffer achterop de motor

Spiegels zoals deze Cavalcade spiegel worden op de achterzijde van de spiegel (inspiegelbeeld) met een speciale diamantfrees gegraveerd Na het graveren worden delijnen en letters met speciale watervaste witte (of evt zwarte) verf met de handingekleurd zodat de afbeelding goed zichtbaar wordt en blijft Vooral als de spiegelin een spiegelhouder zoals in de koffer achterop de motor wordt geplaatst
