From the Principal

In considering 2013 and the events and people highlighted in this edition of The Collegian, I am drawn to the links and connections that begin with

the enrolment of a student or the employment of a staff member at Catholic Ladies’ College and the ways these connections grow, develop and make extraordinary links over many years.

In essence, they are at the heart of all that is “community” at CLC.

The shy and tentative ways of the new student, the confident and respectful relationships of established friendships and then over many years, the richness and diversity of the stories which emerge is, at its best, something of human beauty. There are so many people who make up and contribute to this notion of community. The sense of belonging and the rich tapestry that is Catholic Ladies’ College moves and connects stories across and through the years in quite remarkable ways.

Our Sisters of Charity heritage is central to CLC’s community story and continues to provide strong, courageous and compassionate role models for all our young women.

On 31 December, 2013, the Sisters of Charity will begin the year marking the 175th Anniversary of

the first five Irish Sisters arrival in Australia. The Sisters’ early work with the female prisoners of Parramatta soon grew to include education, health and community outreach ministries. I extend our warmest congratulations and heartfelt thanks to the Sisters on this special occasion.

In the spirit of partnership and connections, this edition of The Collegian highlights the extraordi-narily rich and diverse opportunities, experiences and actions that formed the “tapestry of life” at CLC this semester. I extend my humble thanks for the generous community contributions of so many. May the gifts, talents and goodwill that are at the heart of our students touch and energise you through this publication.

Finally, as we near the end of the year, may the blessings and joy of Christ’s birth be with all throughout this Christmas Season.

Mrs Margaret McKenna Principal

English/Book Week Literary Breakfast

Budding WriterEarlier this year I entered a short story in an annual competition run by Forming Circles, called Written Portraits. The theme was portraits of home and the story had to be between 800 and 1200 words. I wrote my story about a friendship that is formed between an elderly lady named Peggy and a young girl named Simone. A few months ago, I was thrilled to find out that my story had been selected, along with some others, to be published in an anthology. My mum and I flew to Sydney for the book launch, which was an incredible experience. I met the founder of Forming Circles and listened to inspiring speeches, including one by a young girl whose book was published when she was 10 years old! It was a truly surreal experience to see one of my stories in print and I am very thankful for the opportunity.

Sarah Booth 9C

As part of English/Book Week a Literary Breakfast was held in the Resource Centre with a very special guest, award winning playwright and novelist Anna Barnes who spoke about her writing career. Her first published book Girl! The Ultimate Guide to Being You, was named one of the Eva Pownall Notable Books of 2013 by the Children’s Book Council of Australia. The students particularly enjoyed the interaction with Anna after asking her many questions about her career.

Language Perfect AwardsThe Language Perfect World Championships can be likened to a race with all the thrill of fingers dashing across keyboards and minds racing to answer questions word for word. Added to that is the fierce global competition and at the finish line, there is great excitement for the achievements of all competitors. For ten days students worked hard and were sometimes challenged to keep going, but the determination of the CLC language students meant they all had enormous success! The girls answered a staggering 849,813 questions and Catholic Ladies’ College was ranked 31st in the world! Congratulations to all competitors and to Katherine Kim (9C) and Vanessa Plumb (9C) who attained Elite Awards in the Competition of which only 597 were awarded in the world.

MathematicsAs part of Maths Week the Year 10 students enjoyed a fun look at “A Brief History of Mathematics” presented by the hilarious comedian Rod Quantock. Bringing into the spotlight history’s hidden women Mathematicians and tales of famous and not so famous Mathematicians from early history until today, Rod had the students engaged and enthralled in his own amusing way.

Inaugural Italian Sister School Visit

As part of a reciprocal exchange, ten students from Agli Angeli College Verona, Italy accompanied by teacher Prof Chiara Sartori, were hosted by CLC families whose own daughters had visited Agli Angeli College earlier in the year. The Italian tour group had a taste of the Australian lifestyle seeing football games at the MCG, visiting the Eureka Sky Deck, the Queen Victoria Market as well as Healesville Sanctuary where they loved seeing all the Australian animals.

They also enjoyed experiencing family life

with their hosts and having an Australian

barbeque.

The students were amazed at the facilities

that CLC offered and the vast open spaces of

the campus, both of which they experienced

whilst attending classes with their host

sisters. Agli Angeli students appreciated the

generosity of the school and host families as

did the CLC students on their visit to Italy.

Victorian Space Science Education CentreAt the Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC) Year 10 students undertook a Mission to the Orbiting Space Laboratory (MOSL). Each girl underwent Pre-Mission training to enable them to understand the roles and activities that real Astronauts undertake. Firstly the girls underwent fitness testing in preparation for space flight in the Human Performance Laboratory. They then investigated and calculated oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production, metabolic rate, urine and blood analysis.

Students also experienced a mission briefing, a simulated flight and a mission to the ISS where they performed various experiments. They then swapped roles and were assigned to the Mission Control room, linked by audio and visual communications to the space laboratory. The Mission Control officers are responsible for the safety and success of the mission, constantly monitoring the Space Station’s orbit, environment and the safety of the Astronauts which also tested the students’ ability to think and act under pressure. This was an exciting excursion that put the students’ scientific knowledge into practice in a real life situation. We may have some budding Astronauts in the making!

Music

An excellent night of entertainment was provided by the CLC contemporary bands when they had the opportunity to experience a professional gig at Degani’s Café/Restaurant, Diamond Creek, performing to an enthusiastic and appreciative live audience.

Other outside performances were also held this term. They included the vocal group Grace Notes opening the Practically Green Festival at Edendale farm in Eltham and the Junior Band performing at the Beginner Band Bonanza Bash at Blackburn High School.

To conclude a big year in Music, an Evening Concert was enjoyed by many of the CLC community. The concert included performances from our concert bands, contemporary bands, strings, percussion and vocal groups

The Music curriculum at CLC has soared to new heights this year and we are looking forward to another exciting year of music making in 2014.

FOUNDERS’ DAYReflecting on the remarkable life of Mary Aikenhead and the Sisters of Charity , founders of Catholic Ladies’ College, we once again came together to celebrate Founders’ Day, providing opportunities for both fun and quiet gratitude. As we prepare to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the Sisters of Charity arriving in Australia we remember Mary Aikenhead, the inspirational woman whose spirit has enriched our College heritage from its inception. Fittingly, another inspirational woman, past student Liselle Thorburn (nee Pote, CLC 1993) gave a moving address to the College Community and was the highlight of the special Founders’ Day Assembly.

Celebrating the Sisters of Charity 175th Anniversary 1838-201331 December 2013 will be the 175th Anniversary of the arrival of the first Women Religious in Australia. In 1838 Mother Mary Aikenhead, foundress of the Irish Sisters of Charity generously responded to Dr Polding’s pleas and released four professed sisters and one novice to make the long and arduous journey to serve the poor and marginalised in the far off Penal Colony.

On 31 December all Sisters of Charity Australia will be united through modern technology in a prayerful service of thanksgiving and reflection. During 2014 the subsequent foundation date in each eastern Australian States will be commemorated. The Melbourne celebration will be at St Patrick’s Cathedral, East Melbourne, at 10.00am on Saturday, 22 March, 2014 and everyone is welcome to attend.

Farewell to much loved teacher – Mrs Christine Nolan

After 26 years at CLC, it is with mixed emotions

that we say goodbye to Mrs Christine Nolan

who has been such an integral part of the

College community. We are excited for her and

wish her well in her retirement, yet, it is with

sadness that we say goodbye.

At CLC Chris has been involved in education

at all year levels, teaching Humanities, RE and

The Parents’ Association Special EventsThe Parents’ Association joined their Year 12 daughters once again to enjoy a lavish High Tea in the beautiful surrounds of Ballara Receptions. A highlight of the year for Year 12 students was also the Bowling Evening where all those who gathered shared a special time together. Both events were a great success for those who participated; hopefully these events will be opportunities to share again next year. We thank the parents for their hard work and generosity throughout the year. Anyone interested in joining the Parents’ Association would be most welcome. English. She has been an exemplary teacher – highly interested in her students in a caring and compassionate way, both in the classroom and beyond. Chris has provided an enriched learning environment in her classrooms whilst establishing an excellent rapport with her students. Her door has always been open - for students, parents, as well as her colleagues. She has been a role model for young teachers and

is so very well respected and loved by all staff.

Chris has embraced the way education has changed over the years and was integral to the setting up of the Year 7 Interdisciplinary Studies program, taking on the role of Year 7 Coordinator for many years. Beyond the classroom, she has been involved in many aspects of College life, from liturgies to sporting carnivals to production supervision. She has also made significant contributions to many and various professional development committees.

Her wisdom, openness and friendship will be missed by all. The College community sincerely wishes Mrs Christine Nolan a well-deserved and most fulfilling retirement.

As I retire from 40 amazing years in education I am filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. How fortunate am I to have been part of this incredible profession!

26 years of my teaching career have been spent as part of the Catholic Ladies’ College Community and I offer my heartfelt thanks to Principal, Margaret McKenna and former Principal, Patricia Ryan, for their unending support, guidance and friendship and for the wonderful career opportunities provided.

The Sisters of Charity are outstanding women whose faith, sense of justice and spiritual wisdom pervades all that we do at Catholic Ladies’ College. It is their ethos that is the essence of the CLC community.

I would like to thank all the hardworking members of the Catholic Ladies’ College Administration and Maintenance Teams. Their support in every aspect of the school is strong and sure. CLC is most fortunate to have outstanding leadership and I feel extremely lucky to have worked with such wonderful people.

Finally, and most importantly, I wish to say a very deep thanks to the incredible colleagues and friends with whom I have worked closely over years; to the wonderful students whom I have taught and to the many parents with whom I have worked in partnership. These people are at the heart of what Catholic Ladies’ College is about and I will treasure the relationships I have formed in the CLC community forever.

I feel privileged to have been part of this profoundly rich Catholic Ladies’ College community for such a large part of my life. The College and the Sisters of Charity will always remain an integral part of who I am and who I continue to be.

LEARNING MATTERS

Inside the 21st Century ClassroomIn looking for unique and interesting stories to celebrate the diversity of learning at CLC, I have tended to not use classroom situations in an effort to highlight features of College life that people are not so familiar with. That was, until recently, when I had the pleasure of shadowing a film maker in some of the classrooms for the production of A Year in the Life of CLC DVD. I was astounded by this experience.

Our day began with the excited buzz of students and sewing machines in the Textiles room for the Year 11 VET Certificate II in Applied Fashion and Design Technology class. All students were totally engrossed in an eclectic mix of fabrics, texture, drawing, design and machine skills. From there we witnessed the talents of a Year 10 Jewellery class using various techniques and industrial machinery in creating stunning brooch designs.

The Year 11 Mathematics class was a revelation! The teacher was communicating the skills of calculating interest rates, property leasing and

more, using iPads, an electronic white board and graphic calculators. The class was dynamic, interactive and exciting.

It was wonderful to hear the respectful, informed, adult discussion of a Year 11 English Literature class as they revised the play Macbeth for their upcoming exams. Likewise it was a delight to listen to Year 8 English students who delivered well informed and articulate speeches with pride and confidence.

In the Resource Centre students sat in colourful bean bags with their iPads and books as they listened to descriptions of the latest literature on offer. Other students were researching and discussing weather patterns and how they form, whilst many other activities absorbed students from all year levels.

Using the state of the art audio visual system in the Sr Una McAllister Centre, a Year 9 Humanities class was holding a video conference with a class of secondary students in Hong Kong via Skype. All the students were amazed at just how much they had in common!

We enjoyed the lively conversations in a Year 8 Italian Class and the excitement of the Year 7 students answering questions in German on their iPads. Year 11 Science students performed experiments revising for their exams as Visual Communication and Design students grappled with colour and effects working on their own advertising folios.

I felt privileged to observe a small number of classes that contribute to a day in the life of CLC and was thoroughly energized by my experience of the teaching and learning that goes on behind the classroom doors. It reinforced what a progressive and innovative College this is, with dedicated, enthusiastic staff who pride themselves in assisting their students to reach their potential. I have discovered many opportunities to promote CLC from inside the classroom that are genuinely inspiring!

Aboriginal Immersion Experience

We see struggle and hardship in third world countries but we are not seeing what is wrong in our own country, the place we call home. Through the Aboriginal Immersion Experience the girls and I have seen how hard life is for aboriginal people trying to live in their traditional ways and their acceptance into society. There are some people fighting to help, such as Yipirinya School Staff who are doing an amazing job. However, we all need to

get together to help the original people of Australia so that they can live lives where they can afford to feed their children a decent amount of food, put clothes on their backs and send them to school. This experience has really helped me to realise that Australia needs to make changes and stop sugar coating things; we all need to help to make Australia one.

On the inaugural visit, three CLC staff and 14

students from Years 10 and 11 were privileged

to participate in a group immersion to Embul-

In this life changing experience the main

purpose of the group was to visit the Br

Brothers in the Embul-bul community.

Br Beausang School is able to operate

successfully because of the fundraising efforts

of many individuals and groups. It was with

OLD COLLEGIANS

The Col legian - Volume 19 Number 2

Thank you so much Old Collegians for all your support in 2013. Both our Park Hyatt Luncheon and Movie Night have been most successful and will allow us to give our yearly donation to the College to be used at Principal, Margaret McKenna’s discretion. This is a very important part of our Mission and we are happy to be able to contribute to the life of the College in this way. Our Remembrance Mass last week was a very peaceful celebration and a lovely way for us to take some time to remember friends, relatives and colleagues who have been part of the school history and are sadly no longer with us.

Thanks to all the hard working committee who provide me with great support. We truly enjoy

working together to achieve our common goal of friends gathering and fundraising!

If you would like to join our committee or give us feedback on any event, please

feel free to contact me as we would love to hear from you.

Old Collegians' News

Joy Bashford (nee Power CLC early 1940s)It was a pleasure to catch up with Joy Bashford (nee Power) who attended CLC East Melbourne in the late 1930s – early 1940s, from Grade 7 to Form 5. Each day Joy caught the train from Malvern Station into the city, travelled by tram up Collins Street (the fare was one penny) and then walked the short distance to school. After such a long journey and because Joy suffered from arthritis, the kindly nuns would give her breakfast to ensure she was well nourished and feeling stronger before school started.

Joy has happy memories of her days at school. No-one had much during the war years but all shared what they did have. She remembers going to confession at St Patrick’s Cathedral and going on retreat when the priest ‘scared the life out of us’ in his talk about relationships between boys and girls. Joy’s dreams of ever becoming an artist were shattered when, after drawing a

They taught us well and insisted that we recognise and use the gifts we had been given, whatever they were. Half measures were not tolerated! The other big message was that God is always there beside us to help, whatever’s going on, whatever we’re doing and whether we remember it not. Leaving school knowing that gives you a great start!”

leaf in Art, Sister Claver told her very bluntly that ‘ you will never be an artist.’ Instead, she pursued her love of Maths which helped her career in banking.

During the holidays Joy remembers travelling to a house in Healesville owned by the nuns. Orig-

inally it was used during the war to house those stu-dents living close to the city because it was a safer envi-ronment.

In 1949, after the war, Joy worked in a bank in Darwin where she met her future husband Morrie who was

on a working holiday around Australia. They eventually settled in Berwick and Joy recalls the famous movie stars Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner coming briefly to Berwick for the film-ing of some scenes for ‘On the Beach’. In fact,

some of the family’s cows had a starring role!

CLC would like to thank Joy for her donations to the College Archives which included a CLC cup, saucer and matching plate, as well as College magazines.

Special MemoryNorma Jones (nee Glasson, CLC 1955)

Norma remembers going with her friend, Ruth O’Brien to the ice-skating rink which was situated where the Arts Centre is now. It was a Saturday and the girls chose to wear trousers. They were spotted by a prefect who reported them to the Mother Superior at the time who was not at all impressed!

Helen Ludwig (nee English, CLC 1942 - 1950)School life in the 1940s

The English family had a long association with Catholic Ladies’ College. Helen’s mother, Jean McDonough, and her twin sister Aileen, went to CLC, around 1921, as did another sister, Sheila. When Helen commenced at CLC, Sister Theophane who was very old, remembered her mother Jean, as did the German teacher Miss Rush. Helen progressed quickly, completing grades 3 to 6 in two years – disadvantage being that she had to repeat Form 3 because she was too young to progress into Form 4. To quote Sister Claver: ‘The baby has to grow up’.

Helen’s remembers learning hymns and French songs and reading widely. She learnt about the Grand Trunk Road and Rudyard Kipling, developing a great interest in India. She also took piano and elocution lessons through to Matriculation. Helen’s love of languages began in Form 1 learning French and Latin and in Form 2 she chose German because she wanted

to be a spy – due to radio serials and movies she was watching at the time. She noticed that all the spies were caught because they couldn’t speak a word of German.

In a study of ‘Ourselves and the Pacific’, Helen remembers Sister Claver having an admiration for the Chinese and their love of learning and remarking that if there were a fire in the home, the Chinese would save their books, whereas the Australians would save The Sporting Globe - a newspaper which had all the sporting results!

Helen recalls during the war years, some students being evacuated to Healesville and trenches being built all around the Treasury Buildings just near CLC East Melbourne. The students had to practise running out to the trenches just in case the need arose.

Helen remembers school concerts at Cathedral Hall and the Melbourne Town Hall as well as the tradition of singing in the choir at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Holy Thursdays. At one of the school concerts in the Melbourne Town Hall, she felt very privileged when, as a prefect, she had the honour of taking Mr Arthur Calwell (a most prominent politician at this time) and his wife to their seats.

In Matriculation (Form 6) there were only 12 students and Helen studied English, Literature, Music, French and German and then continued studying at University after winning a scholarship.

Helen has no bad memories of CLC but does remember that one of her main worries was always losing her gloves!

Liselle Thorburn ( nee Pote CLC 1993)Founders’ Day.It was indeed a pleasure and a privilege to welcome alumni Liselle Thorburn (nee Pote, CLC 1993) to address the College Assembly on Founders’ Day.

Liselle reflected about her involvement in school life and how proud she was ‘to belong to such a uni-fied, faith-filled and energized CLC com-munity’. She shared her story about life post CLC when her happiness was shat-tered; not only did she have to learn to live with Multiple

Sclerosis but she and her husband Steve were then challenged to the very fibre of their being when their son Caleb died so suddenly from Meningococcal Strain B.

Liselle eventually found the resolve to turn this nightmare into something that could, maybe one day, prevent what happened to Caleb, from happening to anyone else. She utilised her knowledge and professional skills to establish the Caleb Thorburn Foundation which raises funds to assist in the research and development of an immunization to eradicate and / or indeed reduce this insidious disease within Australia. Liselle works tirelessly for the Caleb Thorburn Foundation which is committed to empowering people with accurate information to assist in the identification and diagnosis of Meningococcal, as well as encouraging smart choices to ensure this killer disease does not claim more lives.

Liselle’s life experiences certainly resonated with her audience and the following are some reflections from students:

Yesterday’s speaker was extremely inspirational. We were very lucky to hear Liselle share her tragic story with us. She emphasized to the students that we have to embrace College life and take risks. She was an enthusiastic speaker who kept all the students engaged. Although she had a lot of tragedy in her life she always managed to find the best things in life.

Inspirational. Lesson to be learnt: to live every day as if it were your last one; to not worry about the past because you can’t change it; break down ‘impossible’ into ‘I’m possible’; get involved and make the most of your opportunities.

‘Nothing is ever ‘impossible’. The word itself says ‘I’m possible’; make the most of your time at Catholic Ladies’ College; Catholic Ladies’ College prepared me for life.’

This year the Year 12 Visual Arts Exhibition was opened by internationally recognised leading Australian artist and designer Simone LeAmon. Simone was very impressed with the work by VCE students studying Art, Media and Visual Communications and Design, as well as VET Fashion Design. Her message focused on encouraging the students to continue pursuing what they loved but not be afraid of changing direction. Simone has been engaged as a consultant curator for the biggest and most ambitious exhibition ever staged by the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Now.

Congratulations to Dr Claire Fenby who graduated in March, 2013 having completed her thesis, Experiencing, Understanding and Adapting to Climate in South-Eastern Australia, 1788–1860. Claire analysed the way that climate extremes like drought, high rainfall, flood and bushfire impacted upon Australian societies in the 18th and 19th centuries. The thesis was an interdisciplinary project that used traditional historical documentary material, meteorological observations and palaeo climate data (e.g. tree ring, coral and ice core records) to fill gaps in our understanding of Australia’s past climate. This research was conducted at the University of Melbourne's School of Earth Sciences and the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies, as part of the South-Eastern Australian Recent Climate History (SEARCH) project.

Dr Claire Fenby (CLC 2002)

Congratulations to author Krista Bell on the publication of her latest children’s book The Burning of the Bails. This beautifully presented book is set at Rupertswood Mansion, Sunbury. The story is a semi-fictional/historical account of the origin of the Ashes Cricket Tournament.

The annual Remembrance Mass was held in the Sister Una McAllister Sacred Space in November to mark All Souls Day and remember all deceased past Collegians and staff. Those attending were invited to write the names of those they wished to remember and pray for in a beautiful Remembrance Book which is made available each year for this purpose. The service was celebrated by Father Terry Kean.

The group, which has been meeting this day each year since their 30 Year Reunion, changes in size and participants, but happily meet to catch up on each other’s news. The idea was the initiative of Julie Canals who emails an invitation to her class mates each year prior to the event. It is a great afternoon of fine food, champagne and laughter. The Class of 1975 would love to see others attend this gathering and as many women as possible for our 40th Reunion in 2015. If you would like to be included next year please email Julie: [email protected]
