INTRODUCTION BY CHAIR OF COUNCIL

It is again a pleasure to introduce this Annual Report, as it reviews another very special year at MLC.

Nothing worth doing is ever easy, and only happens with courage, much practice, and a certain daring on the part of each student. MLC provides every girl the opportunity to dare. The College has 100 years of proud achievement, and knows that behind every success, there are essential ingredi-ents of wise leadership, skilled teaching and encouragement, family support, and a great deal of hard work by everyone.

This last year has been no different, and I am proud to pay tribute to all those who have contributed to the successful MLC journey in 2014. Teachers and staff, families, volun-teers, and students themselves, combine to provide oppor-tunities for the girls, and enable them to fulfil their potential. The attention of the Council and its Committees has been on strong governance, wise stewardship, and seeking the best way forward for continued success and excellence for the College and young women in the future.

Council has also been very pleased to support the review and development of separate Constitutions of Council and MLC Foundation. I thank those members of both Council and Foundation for their efforts and expertise to achieve this. A Strategic Planning Committee has also been estab-lished specifically to support exploration of strategic oppor-tunities, decisions, and developments.

Council has worked closely with Principal Rebecca Cody across the key focus areas of our students, our people, our resources, and our community, with many of these achieve-ments celebrated within this Annual Report. I commend the Towards 2025 Strategy to you, it is our vision and intention for the future to enable the best possible outcome for each and every MLC student.

Dr Penny Flett AO

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT: REFLECTIONS OF 2014

In 2014 our students’ tangible awakening across the year was very much connected to practising optimism and grasping opportunities. Mostly, though, by choosing to strive and discover more within themselves MLC learners demonstrated the concept of un-earthing greatness. I am genuinely proud that their striving wasn’t only about seeking to grow and develop as an individual; indeed, in 2014 the interconnected endeavours of our College also enabled others to flourish. “Unearthing greatness” was our theme for the year, and there is ample evidence that its associated principles were realised through various achievements and innovations. As this report references, key highlights include but are not limited to:

1. Australian Council for Educational Leaders’ National School Improvement Tool Review: MLC’s 8 out of a possible 9 outstanding awards exemplifies our school’s leading practices in improvement.

2. Introduction of the Bring Your Own Designated Device (BYODD) initiative: a personalised and mobile approach to technology integration enabling better access to learning materials.

3. Provision of student and parent online Academic Portals to provide ready access to 24/7 academic information.

4. International success at the World Choir Games: three silver medals awarded.

5. Language Perfect World Championships: top school for Chinese in Western Australia; ranked 5th nationally and 7th internationally.

6. Introduction of Leading Teacher Award: MLC’s celebration of and support of exemplary teachers (four appointments thus far).

7. Expansion of service learning programme: relationship with school for learners with disabilities in Malaysia and the introduction of the Week of Amazement.

8. Appointment of Head of Inclusive Learning to better cater for full spectrum of learning needs.

9. Appointment of Academic Mentor in boarding to support rural and international student learning.

10. International Future Problem Solving Awards celebrating MLC’s academic rigour.

11. Launch of MLC Dance Theatre (MLCDT) for Year 7 to Collegians (up to 24 years of age) to experience professional dance practices through an extension and enrichment model.

12. Head of the River Victory - MLC regains title 20 years after first win.

13. Opening of the Aileen Bennett Archive and Resource Room. Archivist works with Junior Years’ students to embrace MLC history and women’s education.

14. Introduction of the Foundation Future Levy (FFL) to establish an intergenerational source of independent income used to advance the educational offerings for MLC girls, now and in the future.

Unquestionably, in 2014 we again lived our College’s Motto: Per Ardua Ad Alta; through striving to the heights.

MLC FOUNDATION INC.

It has been a very busy year for the MLC Foundation. In 2014, outstanding governance issues were addressed through the introduction of constitutional changes to establish a degree of independence between the Foundation and the College. The New Constitution was adopted at a Special General Meeting in April 2014.

On 17 May 2014, the MLC Foundation hosted the inaugural MLC Gala Dinner. We raised in excess of $80,000 for MLC Support Groups and the MLC Foundation. This event not only provided a solid financial return for the Foundation and Support Groups of MLC, but also a chance to celebrate and come together as one community. The event was a great success.

In its first year, the Foundation Future Levy contributed $261,000 towards the Endowment Fund as an enduring source of income for the College.

2014 also saw many acts of individual generosity from the MLC Community that enabled the College to progress previously unfunded projects, and the establishment of a new scholarship partnership with the SAS Resources Trust.

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all contributors to the MLC Foundation. The MLC Community is very generous in giving their time and energy to support the school through various committees and community based activities. The continued dedication and support is greatly valued.

I look forward to continuing our journey together towards nurturing the development of an open culture of philanthropy at MLC.

The MLC Foundation Annual Report for 2014 will be released in April 2015 and will be available on the MLC website.

James McClements

OUR COMMUNITY’S EXPECTATIONS

During 2014, MLC commissioned MMG Education to conduct an independent and confidential survey of parents, and also students from Years 5-12. The purpose of the survey was to ascertain data in relation to the College’s performance and to use this data to continually review and improve the educational experience for our students.

We received an outstanding response with 540 parents and 778 students completing the surveys.

In relation to some keys areas, the following results from parents were obtained:

PARENT EXPECTATIONS

The charts show parent scores for expectations met/exceeded ranked in order of importance in choosing a school.Overall, expectations met/exceeded is ‘very high’ (93 per cent) and above MMG’s parent school average benchmark score of 88 per cent.
