Hours: Monday-Friday 9am—noon
This Sunday afternoon (October 17) I will be heading out of town to meet a
group of priests who I meet with on a monthly basis. The priests in the group
are Fr. Pio Atonio, Fr. Steve Daigle, Fr. Eli Gieske, Fr. Kris McKusky, and Fr.
Gabriel Waweru, and the group is known as a “priest fraternity group” or
“priest support group.” Most priests in our diocese are a part of one of these
groups which are highly encouraged by our bishop. They are made up of
priests in our diocese, and the purpose of them is to provide an opportunity
for fraternity, being able to share about the difficulties and joys of priesthood
with other priests, to keep each other accountable for what we need to be
doing as priests, and an opportunity to pray with each other. I have been part
of my priest fraternity group since early on in my first year of priesthood.
These monthly meetings are an essential part of my priesthood because they
strengthen me in my vocation, and since I have been meeting with these men
for several years we are able to challenge each other where needed and can
be a source of encouragement for each other as well. Not every priest is a
part of a fraternity group. Some were parts of groups that separated, or some
don’t want to put another meeting on their calendar. As brother priests it is
essential that we help keep each other accountable for living our lives as
priests, and so I encourage brother priests who are not part of a group to form

one or to join an existing group. Please pray for all of the priests of our diocese, that
we may take advantage of meeting with one another, so that strengthened and re-
newed we may more fully give ourselves in ministry to our parishes.
Being able to share joys and struggles with others who have similar joys and strug-
gles is not only necessary for priests, but for all people. This holds very true when it
comes to living our lives as Catholics. If we do not have a small group of other Catho-
lic friends that we can spend time with and talk about our lives of following Jesus in
the Church He established, it will be much more difficult to live our faith than if we
had such a group we were a part of. I encourage all of us to think about people in
our lives who we could start meeting with (if we don’t do so already), and then actual-
ly start getting together. These meetings don’t have to go deep right away, and in
fact they can be mostly casual. It is important just to start. Perhaps the people that
come to mind aren’t people you would normally spend time with. That’s perfect be-
cause they don’t need to be. As followers of Christ we need a support system of oth-
ers who are trying to follow Christ. We should not be surprised if we feel unsupported
in our faith if we are never around others who are trying to live it too. These small
groups can be a way of helping each other live the faith because you can strengthen
and encourage each other. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to others who can help
you build up your faith.
God Bless.

East Duluth Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
Thinking about becoming Catholic?
East Duluth RCIA classes have begun. It is not too late to join
us. We look forward to meeting you. The classes are held on
Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Fireside Room at the
Cathedral. Park on East Fourth Street or in the Holy Rosary
School lot. Follow signs to the Parish Office and follow direc-
tions to the Fireside Room. If interested, contact the pastor of
one of the East Duluth parishes or
Bob and Sandi Arola, 218-525-2962, [email protected].
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a journey of faith for
persons who are not baptized, who are baptized in another
Christian tradition and desire to become Catholic, and bap-
tized Catholics in need of First Communion and/or Confirma-
tion. There is no cost to attend.
East End Faith Formation
In today’s Gospel, James and John ask to be given seats of
honor when Jesus enters into his glory. Jesus responds, “Can
you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism
with which I am baptized?” Once again, the disciples seem to
be selective in what they hear Jesus say. They want to share
Jesus’ glory, but do not appear to understand that his glory will
be preceded by his suffering. Jesus says that the honor they
seek is not his to give.
Like the Disciples, in order to follow Jesus, we must be willing
to suffer. Jesus explains the importance of service and sacri-
fice in the life of a disciple. Those who wish to be first in God’s
kingdom must be the servants of others.
Following Jesus’ example of sacrificial love continues to be
countercultural in our day. In our culture, achievement is rec-
ognized through awards, prizes, and other symbols of honor.
We need to continue to teach our young people leadership by
offering them opportunities to take responsibility for projects
and tasks. Using these experiences, we can guide them into
understanding that Christian leaders are called to be humble
servants and that they can be leaders too. When they put oth-
ers’ needs before their own and look for small ways to be help-
ful each day and to get along with others, they are being lead-
ers.
Jesus teaches us that greatness in the Kingdom of God will be
achieved through sacrifice and loving service. He came to
teach us about God’s love and forgiveness and to save us
from sin. He gave up his life so that we would have life forever
in heaven with God. He shows us how to be a Christian leader
by being helpful and loving to others.
Pray we may receive honor in God’s eyes by learning to serve
others in love. God Bless, Sonya
There is no faith formation this week. Classes will resume on
Wednesday, October 27th.
Sentinel Service Days are here!
This year, Stella Maris Academy is spreading
out its fall service work throughout the month

er Duluth communities by raking leaves, writ-
ing letters to the homebound, and so much more. These ser-
vice days are one of the many ways Stella Maris Academy
seeks to instill a heart of service in its students, fulfilling its
mission to prepare lifelong learners who lead, love, and serve
as Jesus taught.
