READING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY

Dynamic Parish Initiative

Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, our Dynamic Parish initiative is about helping you take the next

small step toward becoming a Dynamic Catholic. As described in previous bulletins, Dynamic Catholics are

those who live by four behaviors: they have a daily commitment to prayer; continue to learn about our faith

(Jesus wants disciples not just followers); serve generously with their time, talent and treasure; and invite

others to grow spiritually by sharing the love of God with them. They want to help others experience the joy

that flows from having a close relationship with God.

As part of our Dynamic Parish Initiative, we’d like to invite everyone in our community to participate in the

Best Lent Ever program. By joining, you will receive a 3-minute video reflection each morning starting on Ash

Wednesday, to Easter. The reflections feature Matthew Kelly and are based on the book we handed out at

Christmas, Rediscover the Saints. Take 10 minutes each day to listen to the video and reflect on its message.

Pick up a Best Lent Ever Journal to help you in your daily contemplation.

As we often hear from our priests, Lent shouldn’t be focused simply on what we give up, but on who we

become through the disciplines of prayer, fasting, and generosity. Let’s all move toward becoming a-better-

version-of-ourselves and discover together the amazing possibilities God has in store for each of us this Lent.

It’s simple to sign up at BestLentEver.com. The Best Lent Ever Journals are located by the doors of each

Church.

The Dynamic Parish Implementation team is: Chrissy Cerretani, Paula Colpitts, Janet Davidson-Dee, Diane

Finigan, Martha Jane Gagnon, John Guanci, John Silva, Lisa Tavoletti, Fr. Steve Rock, Fr. Victor Vitug, Deacon

Neil Sumner

Early Release Day

Whether watched on television network news or

viewed on YouTube, video of a deployed military

person’s surprise return home demonstrates the

power of unexpected surprise. A shout of unbelief, a running leap into the arms, a hug and tears of joy all

show the importance of presence.

We Knights wish to encourage moms and dads to consider taking an early release day this coming week.

Offer your family an unexpected surprise and join the Reading Catholic Community at Saint Athanasius for

the 3:00 PM Liturgy of the Word with Ashes on Ash Wednesday February 26th. As we begin our Good Friday

Family Promotion help us, “Bring families into more robust practice and better understanding of our Catholic

faith and the triduum.” Together with the entire Reading Catholic Community, let us take advantage of the

many Lenten programs available, and make this our best Lent ever!

Food for Family Thought

The Kingdom of God happens not only in the future,

but also in the present. Those who follow Jesus are

called to do what we can; to establish justice; to

reduce oppression; and to promote the common

good. Talk with your child about current events that

illustrate how people are bringing about positive

change.

Salamat, A Filipino “Thank You”

Due to your generosity, we raised $1229 for the

people of the Philippines suffering from the effects of

an active volcano. Our donated funds were sent to

Fr. Paul Perlado, Secretary, Capuchin Philippine

Office. There, the funds will provide face masks as

well as needed emergency supplies to the many

displaced people within the Philippines. Again,

Salamat to each of you for your continued generosity

to people in need world-wide.

Lent is a time of preparation. This 40-day journey

almsgiving, beginning on Ash Wednesday, helps us

• Prayer: Deepens our relationship with God

• Fasting and Abstinence: Removes obstacles

• Almsgiving: Helps us serve those in need and live

Little Lenten Book

The books are available at the churches’ entrances.

This book is filled with daily reflections. Feel free to

take one and perhaps even another to share with

family or friend!

Fridays at 7:00pm at St. Agnes Church

Meditate on the intense sacrifice Jesus undertook for

our salvation.

Lenten Regulations

Abstinence -- Catholics over 14 years of age are

bound to the obligation of abstinence. Abstinence is

to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays

of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be used

at all.

Fast -- Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of

their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of

fasting. On these days, only one full meal is allowed.

Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain

strength, may be taken according to each one’s

needs, but together they should not equal another

full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but

liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed.

Commendable, particularly during Lent, is generosity

to local, national and world programs of sharing our

abundance.

All are invited to break bread with fellow St. Agnes

and St. Athanasius parishioners: young, old, new to

the community, parents, children, grandparents,

friends: come one, come all!

“Lent is a time of going very deeply into

ourselves… What is it that stands between us and

God? Between us and our brothers and sisters?

Between us and life, the life of the Spirit?”

~ Catherine Doherty

Catherine Doherty’s cause for canonization as a saint

was opened by Pope John Paul II in 2000, and she has

been given the official title Servant of God

of prayer, fasting and abstinence, and

deepen our relationship with Christ.
