DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What extraordinary graces are available on Divine Mercy Sunday? A. Our Lord revealed to St. Faustina His desire to literally flood us with His graces on that day. He told her: On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. The soul that will go to Confession [beforehand] and receive Holy Communion [on that day] shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and pun- ishment (Diary 699). The theologian who examined St. Faustina's writings for the Holy See, Rev. Ignacy Rozycki, explained that this is the promise of a complete renewal of baptismal grace, and in that sense like a "second Baptism" (in much the same way that St. Catherine of Siena called sacramental Confession, undertaken out of true love of God, an "ongoing Baptism") (The Dialogue, no. 75). The extraordinary graces promised to the faithful by our Lord Himself through St. Faustina should not be confused with the plenary indulgence granted by Pope John Paul II for the devout observance of the Second Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy Sun-day). The Decree of the Holy See offers: "A plenary indulgence, granted under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eu-charistic communion and prayer for the intentions of Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honour of Di-vine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in You!)..." Q. How can I receive extraordinary graces on Divine Mercy Sunday? A. In order to receive the extraordinary graces, you should pre-pare by making a good Confession, so that you can receive Holy Communion in a state of grace on Divine Mercy Sunday. In addi-tion, Our Lord asked St. Faustina to be sure to perform acts of mercy: Yes, the first Sunday after Easter is the Feast of Mercy, but there must also be acts of mercy (Diary 742). Our Lord also requested that the Image of The Divine Mercy be solemnly venerated on that day. I want the image to be sol-emnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it (Diary 341). Q. Can I receive Holy Communion on Mercy Sunday and of-fer those graces for someone else, living or deceased? A. Our Lord's promise to grant complete forgiveness of sins and punishment on the Feast of Mercy is given to those who accept His invitation to come to the Fountain of Life. These graces are for ourselves. I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My mercy (Diary 1109). Whoever ap-proaches the Fount of Life on this day will be granted complete remission of sins and punishment (Diary 300). The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punish-ment (Diary 699).

From our Pastor Father Rommel Tolentino

However, given the extraordinary graces that the person receives from Holy Communion on Mercy Sunday namely, the complete renewal of baptismal grace the time after that Com-munion is an excellent time for the communicant to intercede for loved ones on earth, and to begin to undertake indulgenced works, as established by the Church, for the sake of the souls in purgatory. In fact, Pope John Paul II granted a plenary indulgence for special devotions to The Divine Mercy on Divine Mercy Sunday, and these indulgences can be obtained for the suffering souls in purgatory. Q. I am Catholic, but I cannot receive Holy Communion be-cause I'm divorced and remarried outside the Catholic Church. Can I receive the graces of Divine Mercy Sunday? A. If at present you cannot generally receive the Sacraments in the Catholic Church because of your marital circumstances, you would also not be permitted to receive Holy Communion on Di-vine Mercy Sunday until you rectify your situation through the pastoral offices of the Church. Our Lord said to St. Faustina: The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vessel only, and that is trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive. Souls that trust boundlessly are a great comfort to Me, because I pour all the treasures of My graces into them. I rejoice that they ask for much, because it is My desire to give much, very much(Diary 1578). With this in mind, you can participate in the celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday by making a Spiritual Communion, with great trust. God will give you all the graces that He sees that you need because of your great trust. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception will have a special celebration of Divine Mercy this Sunday, April 11th, from 2:45 PM to 5:00 PM. We will have Confessions* available, Blessing and Veneration of the Image, Exposi-tion of the Blessed Sacrament, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Prayers and Hymns, Eucharistic Adoration and Benedic-tion. It does not include Mass, so you still need to attend Mass and receive Holy Communion this weekend in or-der to receive the extraordinary graces of Divine Mercy Sunday. High Mass in Extraordinary Form immediately follows the celebration at 5:00 PM. *Those who already went to Confession should make room for others. The Church allows Confession up to 20 days before or after Divine Mercy Sunday, as long as Holy Communion is re-ceived in the state of grace on the feast itself.

At the Easter Vigil Mass,

we welcomed three new members into our family of the Cathedral Parish.

Chastity Rae Swinburn was initiated into the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Chas was raised in Vinton, Louisi-ana, where she attended Community Christian School and then Vinton High School. Growing up, she attended Park Avenue United Methodist Church. She credits her early schooling, her first church, and her parents with planting seeds of faith. Chas has several dear friends who are Catholic, and she has always felt drawn to the Church and her traditions. Chas is an avid learner. She obtained three undergraduate degrees from LSU before graduating Tulane University Law School. Chas is now an attorney, and she practices at the law firm of Stock-well, Sievert, Viccellio, Clements & Shaddock. Alexander Reese was born in Long Island, New York. He was baptized into the Catholic Church as an infant. His family relocated to Lake Charles when he was 6 years old. He was confirmed in the Catholic Church and received Holy Eucharist for the first time at our Easter Vigil Mass. Not having practiced the faith as a child, Alex is happy to be fully received into the Church as an adult. Stephanie Richard was born in Houston, Texas, al-though her family is originally from Lake Charles. She was baptized and received her first Holy Communion in Houston. Afterward, Stephanie returned to Lake Charles where she attended Mass regularly with her grandparents Ruby and Wayne Guidry at the Cathedral. At Easter, Stephanie was confirmed to complete her sacraments of initiation. Stephanie and Alexander are engaged to be married in October of this year. It was their relationship and their families which drew them to the Catholic Church.

Given the circumstances, Bishop Provost is providing this prayer for the use of the faithful:

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least into my heart. I embrace You as if You are al-ready there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. (You may make this Act of Spiritual Communion any-time you need it and as often as you need it.)

Salus Populi Romani Protectress and Health of the Roman People

Prayer against the Coronavirus O Mary, you shine continuously along our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the Cross were near to the pain of Jesus, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us, He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and took up our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
