“Nothing but a sensation!” (SWR2)

The open-air lake stage in Bregenz is one of the most spectacular opera venues in the world, requiring a long and careful planning. Stage designer and director Philipp Stölzl, set designer Heike Vollmer and a large group of experts involving more than 46 engineering companies from Austria, Germany and Switzerland spent three years planning, adapting and building the scenery.

Therefore Rigoletto was the natural choice as Unitel’s first opera produced in staggering Ultra High Definition with Dolby Vision & Atmos. The result is a “breathtaking, tight and thrilling arrangement, extremely beautiful. Philipp Stölzl delivers a superlative Rigoletto to Bregenz lake stage” (Frankfurter Rundschau). See page 25 (opera performance) and page 54 (documentary) for details.

“What do we see when we listen, when we really listen to music?” Most of us would find this question difficult to answer. But back in the 1960s, one man knew what he wanted to see: the world’s best performers captured on film of the highest quality and with a sound to rival the concert hall’s. And he decided to do something about it.

Leo Kirch was this man, and the company he founded in 1966 has been dedicated to realizing his dream ever since. Unitel, now part of Jan Mojto’s corporate group, has soon become the world’s leading producer of classical music programs for film, television, DVD & Blu-ray and Digital Media.

This Avant Premiere 2020 catalogue presents all additions from the year 2019 to Unitel’s catalogue, which in total features more than 2.000 performances of operas, orchestral music, chamber music, ballets and operettas, as well as musical essays, backstage footage, portraits and documentaries.

Unitel has always placed the greatest emphasis on quality, which extends to all aspects of the production: from the artists to the technology. This means that Unitel has always been at the forefront of new technological developments , always searching for the most authentic, faithful ways of duplicating and heightening the musical experience. With this catalogue we proudly present not only our first production in Dolby Vision · Atmos, but also nine of Unitel’s most legendary programs remastered by NHK to stunning 8K Super High Vision and 22.2 sound, see page 56.

STAGED BY CHRISTOF LOY

At Salzburg Festival, Cecilia Bartoli in the title role of Ariodante “is in a league of her own!” (Standard). Christof Loy, one of Germany’s most distinguished stage directors, gives a compelling psychological reading of Handel’s opera about the intrigues at the Royal Scottish court. He

lets Bartoli’s Prince Ariodante break free from gender clichés, based on the premise that true love doesn’t decide by gender. In her arias, the Italian superstar effortlessly switches between cheerful and lamenting coloraturas. “The singing was sensational!” (LA Times).

After their successful collaboration for La clemenza di Tito the dream team Peter Sellars and Teodor Currentzis again joined forces to trans-pose Mozart’s extraordinary opera Idomeneo into the present world. The fabulous Freiburger Barockorchester shines with elegance and

precision, and MusicAeterna Choir can rightfully be called “the best choir in the world” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Chinese lyric soprano and rising star Ying Fang gives her highly acclaimed Festival debut in the role of Ilia, Nicole Chevalier is brilliant as furious Elettra.

Operetta enthusiast Barrie Kosky has landed a gigantic success with Offenbach’s subversive and hilarious reversion of the Orpheus myth at the Salzburg Festival. Kosky created a magically precise staging in a glittering opulent scenery and a literally devilish choreography. The

dialogues are performed by the brilliant German actor Max Hopp as John Styx. Under Enrique Mazzola’s precise conducting the Wiener Philharmoniker provide “a sparkling orchestral sound” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). “A frantic and fabulous show” (New York Times).

Giuseppe Verdi’s emotional political thriller, brilliantly captured in Andreas Kriegenburg’s puristic staging, becomes a musical feast in Salzburg with a high-class ensemble including René Pape, Luca Salsi, Marina Rebeka and Charles Castronovo. Conductor Valery Gergiev

gives a “musically differentiated and overall convincing interpreta-tion of Verdi’s sonically immensely subtle score” (Die Zeit). The Wiener Philharmoniker and the choir of the Konzertvereinigung Wiener Staatsopernchor perform superbly.

To end his active conducting career after 65 years, maestro Bernard Haitink together with the Wiener Philharmoniker gives a farewell concert at the Großes Festspielhaus, leaving no doubt of being one of the best Bruckner interpreters ever. The Dutch conductor, who was appointed honorary member of the Wiener Philharmoniker shortly before the concert, is joined by star pianist Emanuel Ax in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. The concert ends with Bruckner’s monumental Symphony No. 7: “No more Bruckner under Haitink, that’s a cut in the history of interpretation” (Wiener Zeitung).

Acclaimed by critics as an evening of superlative, Martha Argerich – doubtless one of the greatest living pianist – joins Daniel Barenboim and his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra for an unforgettable interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. Argerich’s playing is full of astonishing virtuosity and uncompromising, alternating with breakneck passages and tender tones: “Martha Argerich is and remains unique” (Die Presse). In addition to Tchaikovsky’s brilliant piece, Schubert’s Symphony “Unfinished” is played, a work that has never been performed during the composer’s lifetime, as well as Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra, completed in 1945 – a highly demanding technical piece that challenges orchestra members as virtuosos.

In Laurent Pelly’s dream-like staging of Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, one of the most important bel canto works of all time, a top vocal cast shines at the Wiener Staatsoper. Olga Peretyatko is a phenomenal Lucia, joined by Juan Diego Flórez, the bel canto

superstar and “probably the world’s best Edgardo” (Kronenzeitung) and George Petean as Enrico. With Evelino Pidò on the rostrum, the orchestra of the Wiener Staatsoper excels under this “ideal master of bel canto music” (Die Presse).

French director Mariame Clément takes a clever and exhilarating look at modern heroism in Jules Massenet’s operatic rarity Don Quichotte: “a striking interpretation” (Neue Musikzeitung). But this opera is also a musical discovery, not least because of the outstanding

cast starring Gábor Bretz as Don Quichotte, David Stout as Sancho and Anna Goryachova as Dulcinée. In the pit, Daniel Cohen leads the Wiener Symphoniker to a dynamically differentiated performance. A musically as visually absolutely rewarding evening!

The directing duo Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier create a superb and witty realization of L’equivoco stravagante (The Bizarre Misun-derstanding), one of the less-known operas of Gioachino Rossini. In addition to the amusing ironic staging, conductor Carlo Rizzi together

with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI and his excellent singer ensemble including Teresa Iervolino and Davide Luciano offer an absolute musical highlight of the Rossini Festival. “The evening is simply stunning” (Neue Musik Zeitung).

What a pompous and exquisite gala to celebrate opera legend Plácido Domingo in the breathtaking Arena di Verona! 50 years ago the young Madrilenian singer Plácido Domingo gave his debut at the ancient open-air theatre: the beginning of a lasting and exceptional relationship. To mark the anniversary, Domingo

No effort was spared to create an unforgettable evening in a unique atmosphere in the completely sold-out amphitheatre, which has been at the heart of Italian entertainment for almost 2,000 years.

CONDUCTED BY HANSJÖRG ANGERERWORKS BY BRAHMS, J. STRAUSS, SMETANA, CERHA ET AL.

A century after its collapse, the Danube Monarchy lives on – in the Waltz, the March, the Csárdás and the Polka. In a splendid gala concert the Bläserphilharmonie Mozarteum Salzburg, led by Hansjörg Angerer, brings the glamour of the world empire to life. The masterpieces of the leading composers who worked during the last hundred years of the Habsburg Monarchy are lively and triumphant, soulful and melancholic. Percussion superstar Martin Grubinger shines with a rousing performance of a specially arranged percussion suite. For the grand finale there is but one choice: The Blue Danube, the posthumous “national anthem” of the Danube Monarchy.

performs an absolutely breathtaking Mass in B Minor at the Philharmonie de Paris. In the beautiful Royal Chapel of Versailles he conducts Monteverdi’s monumental Vespro della Beata Vergine with an outstanding cast. In Stravaganza

Eumeralla, a war requiem for peace brings into focus a period of Australia’s history that is yet to be fully understood. Written and composed by acclaimed Yorta Yorta soprano and composer Deborah Cheetham, this requiem for peace is sung entirely in the ancient dialects of the Gunditjmara people. Benjamin Northey

is “superbly conducting” the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, receiving “well-deserved and spontaneous standing ovations” (Limelight Magazine). Above all, this performance is a sign of willing-ness to continue on the path of reconciliation, in which Eumeralla represents a significant step.

MAHLER: SYMPHONY NO. 5TONKÜNSTLER-ORCHESTER CONDUCTED BY YUTAKA SADO

GUSTAV MAHLER SYMPHONY NO. 5 IN C SHARP MINOR

During their first tour of Germany together, the Tonkünstler-Or-chester and their music director Yutaka Sado give their acclaimed debut in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg with Gustav Mahler’s impressive Symphony No. 5. Mahler described his Fifth Symphony

as a “cursed work” that “no one understands”. While the extreme variety of expression actually overwhelmed the audience at the time, the symphony enjoys the highest popularity today, especially thanks to its gossamer-like Adagietto movement.

Top-class soloists, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Sächsischer Staatsopernchor Dresden present highlights from Lehár’s popular operetta Das Land des Lächelns. Besides a bittersweet love story, the piece offers one of the greatest operetta hits: “Dein ist mein

ganzes Herz”. According to conductor Christian Thielemann “Oper-etta only becomes really good when it is performed at a very high level”, a challenge that the Staatskapelle Dresden together with Jane Archibald, Erin Morley and Pavol Breslik masters impressively.

For the very first time in the orchestra’s history, the Wiener Phil-harmoniker have engaged themselfes to a complete Bruckner cycle and have invited worldwide renowned Bruckner expert Christian Thielemann to take the podium. The Second and the Eighth Symphonies are part of this large-scale Bruckner Cycle, which extends to the composers 200th birthday in 2024, performed at Vienna’s beautiful Musikverein. The orchestra, which premiered four of the nine Bruckner Symphonies, is more familiar with this

music than any other ensemble. Anton Bruckner’s powerful and sonically grandiose symphonies never cease to amaze. For the performance of the Second Symphony the press was full of praise: With the Wiener Philharmoniker, Thielemann creates a “combina-tion of formal perfection, stringency and nuances, complemented by wonderful wind solos” (Wiener Zeitung). The reactions to the concert of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8 were no less enthusiastic: “It couldn’t be better and more ravishing” (Kurier).

On the occasion of his anniversary year the Philharmonic Five bring Beethoven’s timeless music to life in the extraordinary venue of teamLab Tokyo, the world’s first digital art museum on 10,000 square meters. The Philharmonic Five, four soloists from the ranks of the Wiener Philharmoniker together with one of the most prolific pianists of our time, combine their sound aesthetics, the art of phrasing and virtuosity with a modern, powerful dynamic

of expression and reinvent classical music. The arrangement in film and jazz music style emphasize Beethoven’s truly innovative spirit, and above all his talent for improvisation and his way of anticipating jazz and film music elements long before their birth. In the space of teamLab the Philharmonic Five create a completely new sensory and auditory impression of his oeuvre.

Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli – even among fellow pianists

this name almost evokes reverence, because it stands for the

highest perfection, for a cult of beauty that perhaps no other

master pianist has ever practiced. But it also stands for concert

cancellations at short notice and artist’s neuroses, which are

pleasurably spread by the media. “Beyond Perfection – Arturo

Benedetti Michelangeli” is the result of a 30-year search for

traces, which has not only led to interesting contemporary

witnesses, but in particular has brought to light a wealth of

new archive material: Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli has never

been seen and, above all, never heard like this before. Thus one

can experience at first hand how the severely stricken maestro

fights his way back to his old perfection after a heart attack.

On 5 January 2020 Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli would have

turned 100. This is the first comprehensive and multi-faceted

portrait of the legendary pianist.

Hilary Hahn is doubtlessly one of the most successful violin-

ists of our time. Numerous award-winning CD recordings and

concerts with the most important conductors and orchestras

worldwide make her an artist who seems to have achieved

everything at a young age. The audience flocks to her sold-out

concerts. She is appreciated and respected by fellow musi-

cians. Whether the late Sir Colin Davis, her musical partners

Paavo Järvi, Kent Nagano or Gustavo Dudamel – they were

and are full of praise and admiration: Hilary Hahn’s virtuosity

is unique, her perfectionism legendary. And yet, again and

again and with full dedication, she crosses the boundaries of

classical music in order to find new impulses and challenges

for herself and her music.

Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre,

Tokyo’s National Theatre and many more – Friedemann Vogel,

winner of numerous significant dance awards, has conquered

the most important ballet stages in the world. A German

dancer at the top of the ballet world – this is an absolute rarity.

The portrait film accompanies the luminary of the German

ballet scene in his everyday life and work; further, it features

interviews with Vogel’s dance partners and role models at the

Stuttgart Ballet, such as Marcia Haydée, and excerpts from his

most recent performances.

KARAJAN

In 2019 – on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his death on 16th July – the world will remember one of the great conductors of the 20th century: Herbert von Karajan, who is represented in the Unitel catalogue with nearly 50 hours of music recorded at the peak of his artistry. Karajan’s association with Unitel has produced such musical treasures as the complete cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Franco Zeffirelli’s legendary 1965 Bohème production from La Scala, the Verdi Requiem with the young Luciano Pavarotti, Jean-Pierre Ponnelle’s filming of Madama Butterfly with Mirella Freni, Plácido Domingo and Christa Ludwig,

and many other great productions.

The Unitel catalogue also contains numerous award-winning documentaries on the life of the maestro and pioneer of music recording, such as Robert Dornhelm’s “Beauty As I See It” or Eric Schulz’s “The Second Life”.
