Stationary source sampling is conducted to evaluate gas stream emissions to the atmosphere from stacks, ducts or process exhausts. A pol-lutant’s concentration is measured by extracting a known volume from the gas stream and determining the average stack gas flow rate over the sampling period. The mass emission rate of each constituent then may be calculated. In the area of Stack Sampling Methods, there are 3 major categories of test-ing: Isokinetic Reference Methods, Instrumental Reference Methods (IRM), and Gaseous Sampling (which includes sampling for mercury). Obtaining a representative sample of particulate matter from a gas stream requires a more complex procedure than sampling only for gases. Particles can be either liquid droplets or solids. Representative sampling requires that the velocity of the gas/particle mixture passing into the sampling nozzle must be as close as possible to the velocity of the gas stream in the stack or duct. When the velocities are the same, the sampling is isokinetic. During the entire sampling period, the stack velocity must be monitored constantly and the pumping rate adjusted so that the nozzle intake veloc-ity matches as closely as possible the velocity of the in-stack gas/particle mixture. In addition, the pumping rate needs to be adjusted for differences in pressure, temperature and moisture between the stack conditions and the pump or meter console. The exact steps to conduct this type of sampling are spelled out in U.S. EPA Reference Method 5. This method also requires knowledge of U.S. EPA References Methods 1 through 4. ISOKINETIC SOURCE SAMPLING EQUIPMENT
Apex Isokinetic Source Sampling Systems are rugged versatile equipment designed for extracting a representa-tive flue gas sample from a source to determine dust and fumes emissions in accordance with many U.S. EPA Reference Methods as published in CFR 40 Part 60 Appendix A. The Apex Isokinetic Source Sampling System allows the operator to monitor gas velocities, temperatures, pressures and adjust sample flow rates to obtain a representative flue gas sample.
The results are often used to prove compliance with existing and applicable regulations. It can also be used to characterize the gas stream, tune or optimize the process or combustion source, or validate control processes in place.

ISOKINETIC SOURCE SAMPLING CONSOLE - MANUALThe XC-500 Series Sampling Console is a rugged, lightweight metering console used to extract gas samples in accordance with US EPA Method 5 for determining source emissions for dust and fumes. The Apex Isokinetic Source Sampler allows the operator to monitor gas velocities, temperatures, pressures and adjust sample flow rates to maintain isokinetic sampling conditions. Comes with digital temperature controllers, a choice between digital or liquid manometers, digital temperature displays and external pump connections. Stainless steel fittings and quick connects are standard. Units in the XC-500 Series are available in Standard or Metric units, 110V or 220VAC, optional internal orsat pump. XC-500 Series Sampling Console features a molded, rugged X-case with side handles for attaching the easy carry strap. The X-case allows for rear door access. Apex Instrument’s Isokinetic Sampling Consoles are manufactured to conform to the construction design criteria and specifications cited in U.S. EPA Method 5, Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR Part 60) and APTD-0581 documents. All Apex consoles are calibrated prior to shipping.

XC-572 Source Sampling ConsoleThe XC-572 Source Sampling Console is the metric version of the XC-522. It is a full featured, compact, and lightweight Isoki-netic Source Sampler. It has all the great features you want and the reliability you need. Field set up is easy with non-reversible external pump connections and the industry standard 4-pin electrical connector. METhOd 4 SOURCE SAMPLING CONSOLEThe Apex XC-40 Source Sampler Console is a durable, lightweight meter console ideal for Method 4 (Determination of the Moisture Content of Stack Gas). The meter console can be used with standard impingers and accessories to collect moisture for required calculations. This unit heats the stack probe and with its internal pump pulls 0.75 cfm as required to comply with Method 4.

Method 4 Determination of the Moisture Content of Stack Gas Summary: Stack gas is extracted at constant rate (less than 21lpm) for a minimum volume of 600 liters. Moisture is scrubbed from the sample stream and measured volumetrically or gravimetrically.

NOZZLES FOR ISOKINETIC SAMPLING Apex Instruments offers Button-Hook Nozzles in multiple materials. The size needed for isokinetic sampling depends on the stack gas velocity; the material depends on the stack temperature andthe sampling method. The most popular nozzles are constructed from seamless 316 stainless steel and can be coated with FEP or SilcoSteelCR®. Other nozzle materials include Borosilicate Glass, Alloy 600 and Quartz. Standard sampling nozzles are 4”long and have a 5/8” o.d. shank for attaching to theprobe union. Stainless steel nozzles are configured with an O-Ring to aid in positive leak checks. A bored out union is needed with Apex O-Ring nozzles, although a standard union can be used if the O-Ring is removed. Other sizes and configurations are available. Nozzles must be measured before initial use. Glass and Quartz Nozzles are available with a female 14/35 ground glass taper joint eliminating the need for the 5/8” union. For use with male taper joint probe liners.
Unique to Apex Instruments, the Nozzle Shank has integrated Ferrule with O-Ring Groove. O-Ring (O-O14V) shown.

Features a tightly wound heating element around a rigid tube. The rigid tube design allows liner replacement without removing the heating element. Actual tube length is 2-3/8” less than nominal length. Apex probe heaters are designed to operate at the method 5 specified temperature of 245°F (+/-25 Degree F). Specify alternate temp requirement if needed at the time of order. The maximum recommended temperature is 260°C (500°F). In extreme applications (probe heaters over 11 feet, long u-cord, long power extension cord), power drops may occur. In these instances, a separate temperature controller is suggested. See Gas Analysis Section, Page 9 for Apex ICH-901 Temperature Controller. Alternate wattage requirement to be specified at time of order.

MOdULAR SAMPLE CASE ASSEMBLIESApex Instruments Modular Sample Case Assemblies are versatile, lightweight and available in a variety of configura-tions. There are three different filter ovens, and two different risers that can attach to the bottom of the ovens, with four different impinger cases. The impinger cases slide on and off for easy changing of the impinger sets between test runs. Several standard assemblies are available or the individual components can be purchased separately. FILTER OVENSFilter ovens have lightweight powder-coated aluminum-lined panels with stainless steel clamps, hardware and E-Glass insulation thermal insulation. Internal reinforcements reduce flexing of box when testing with long probes. Front and rear doors provide greater accessibility. The handle is designed for attaching to a monorail for easy traversing. The 1” probe clamp may easily be removed from the oven and replaced with differ-ent alternative probe clamps. A SBR-10 Riser is for mounting the impinger case in the rigid arrangement. The SB-2 is the traditional full-size filter oven that is designed for the rigid arrangements for accommodating a cyclone before the filter. The SB-2M Miniature Filter Box and SB-2 Filter Oven will accept standard 2”, 3”, and 4” filter assemblies.

MOdULAR SAMPLE CASE FRAMEThe Modular Sample Frame (SB-8) with Probe Clamp is an ideal addition for sampling methods that require no heated filter compartment such as Method 8, Method 306 and in-stack filtration methods. The SB-8 secures the probe and impinger case in a rigid manner. The sample frame is made of durable powder coated aluminum with stainless steel probe clamp and impinger case slides.

Apex offers four different removable Sample Box Impinger Cases. These cases are constructed from a thicker aluminum to reduce cracking, durable polyethylene foam insulation, and pre-punched foam insert for holding the impinger bottles in place, and have a fold down handle with a rope centering guide and two high strength brackets for mounting strain relief. The cases slide on and off the heated filter box for easy changing of the impingers between test runs. All cases are equipped with a spring-loaded latch to prevent accidental slippage.

PFA FittingsApex offers both Straight and Elbow PFA Fittings with 1/4” NPT for 1/4”, 3/8” and 1/2” tubing and a ball joint with a 5/8” tube union for adapting to plain probe liners. PFA (Perfluoro-alkoxy) fittings are chemically inert and highly corrosive resistant. Higher mechanical strength than PTFE at elevated temperatures (to 500O).
Apex offers Glass-Filled PTFE #28 Ball and Socket Adapters. Glass fiber fillers are added to Virgin PTFE to improve upon the mechanical properties. Adapters are resistant to deformation under a heavy load and will significantly improve the performance of the seal during a test. Glass-filled adapters are tapped for 1/4” NPT fittings.

COMPACT METhOd 5The Apex Compact Method 5 Sampler Kit features an independently Heated Stainless Steel Filter Assembly (SFA-82H) that connects directly to a standard Method 5 probe. It does not require a separate heated filter compartment, and utilizes a flexible sample line, and a split umbilical cord with power adapter, to allow sampling in space-limited areas. The standard glass impingers have been replaced with Stainless Steel Impingers (S-5CN) to eliminate glass breakage. STAINLESS STEEL hEATEd FILTER ASSEMBLYThe Apex Instruments Heated Stainless Filter Assembly (SFA-82H) is for sampling particulates from space-limited industrial sources. The filter assembly has a two piece threaded clamping ring with an integral 300 watt ring heater . A Viton® O-Ring seals the 82.6 mm filter and prevents sample bypass. It has stainless steel inlet, outlet and a PTFE filter support screen (GA-3T). The inlet plate comes with a 5/8” tube union for swaging directly to a plain probe liner. The outlet plate has 3/8” female NPT connection and a male 3/8” full flow quick connect. The mating female quick connects with the thermocouple, which is supplied with the Unheated Sample Line (USL-�-QST) or SFA-82-QCF6, may be ordered separately. There is a thermal insulated blanket supplied with each unit. An unheated version is also available without the integral heater and blanket. Add “V” to end of part number for 240V at no extra cost.

METhOd 5I The METHOD 5I SAMPLING KIT is similar to Basic Method 5, except for the addition of the 5I Holder (SGFA-47-5I) and is designed for the determination of low-level particulate matter (PM) emissions from stationary sources. Method 5I is most effective for PM catches less than 50 mg and is valid for performing correlation of manual PM measurements to PM con-tinuous emission monitors or determining PM emissions from low-level sources such as turbines. Controlled Condensate is an alternative to EPA Method 8 for determining sulfuric acid emissions. Sulfuric acid vapor or mist and the sulfur dioxide are separated, by controlling the condensation based on difference in dew points, and both fractions are measured separately by the barium-thorin titration method. Controlled condensation method is the primary sampling and analytical tool for quantifying sulfuric acid emissions from stationary sources. The method is based upon the selective condensation of sulfuric acid from a gas stream by means of a water cooled condenser. The major advantage of the condensation method is that it provides reliable reproducible SO3 and SO2 values with minimal interference from high SO2 concentrations. There are several versions of the method. Option “V” is added for 240V.

In Method 7C and 7d an integrated sample is passed through a series of full-size orifice impingers that contain an alkaline-potassium permanganate solution. The sample rate is between 400 and 500 cc per minute, normally three one hour samples are collected per test. The MC-623 is the console of choice, however, a low flow orifice adapter is offered for converting the XC-572 Method 5 source sampler console for low flow sampling. The METHOD 29 determination of metal emissions from hazardous waste incinerators involves a modification of the Method 5 train. The sampling train is the same as a Method 5 particulate train with the addition of up to three impingers to enhance the collection of metals of interest. The impinger train requires the SB-4 impinger case, glass nozzles, probe liners and non-metallic union. The method has been validated for the collection of 17 different metals.

In the Ontario-Hydro Method (ASTM D6784-02) a sample is withdrawn from the flue gas stream isokinetically through probe/filter system, maintained at 120OC (250OF) or the flue gas temperature (whichever is greater), followed by a series of impingers in an ice bath. Particle-bound mercury is collected in the front half of the sampling train. Oxidized mercury is collected in impingers containing a chilled aqueous potassium chloride solution. Elemental mercury is collected in subsequent impingers (one impinger containing chilled aqueous acidic solution of hydrogen peroxide and three impingers containing chilled aqueous solutions of potassium permanganate). Samples are recovered, digested, and then analyzed for mercury using cold-vapor atomic absorption (CVAAS) or flourescence spectroscopy (CVAFS). The scope of the method applies to determination of elemental, oxidized, particle-bound and total mercury emissions from coal-fired stationary sources with concentrations ranging from approximately .05 to 100 ug/dscm. The sample train is similar to EPA Method 5.

Method 201A applies to the in-stack measurement of particulate matter (PM) emissions equal to or less than an aerodynamic diameter of nominally 10 microns (PM10) and or 2.5 microns from stationary sources. A gas sample is extracted at a constant flow rate through Apex instruments cyclone, which separates PM greater than PM10.. PM .less than PM10 is collected on the in-line filter. In order to maintain a cut size of 10 microns in the cyclone, the flow rate must be maintained at a constant, discrete value during the run. Apex cyclones meets the specifications of Method 201A and allows use of the equations in Method 201A to calculate the constant sample flow rate.

Introducing PM1 CycloneApex Instruments now offers a cyclone designed for sampling very fine particulate matter in the 1.5 to 0.5 micron range. The cyclone is based on the cyclone “V” from the Multi-stage cyclone system designed and calibrated by Southern Research Institute under contract for the EPA. The design has been modified to accept the nozzles from the PM 2.5 cyclone, which has been expanded to a set of 12 different size nozzles. The sample flow rate must be maintained, in which the constant rate determines the actual “D50” cut-point. The cyclone is followed by a 47 mm filter assembly. Quartz or PTFE coated glass fiber filters should be used to minimize reactivity with the flue gas. The cyclone and nozzles are constructed from grade 316 stainless steel with Viton o-rings. Other materials are available upon request for corrosive or high temperature applications.

wINCIDRS
Windows-based Cascade Impactor Data Reduction System (WINCIDRS) calculates particle size distribution of stack particulate matter (PM) taken with the Cascade Impactor, as well as particle-sizing cyclones. Developed by stack particle analysis experts, this software reduces the time and chances of error involved with reducing particle sizing data. (The PM10/2.5 Software Program (PM-2.5-10C) is extracted from WinCIDRS and simplified for use only with PM10 and PM2.5 cyclones. The calculations are similar to the WinCIDRS, scaled-down specifically for cyclone data reduction. The calculations are intensive enough to demand computer software.)

ISOKINETIC SOURCE SAMPLING EQUIPMENT
This isokinetic method is used to measure Condensable Particulate Matter (CPM) from stationary source emissions after particulate matter has been removed by a heated filter, such as in Method 5, 17 or 201A. The CPM is collected in dry impingers. The impinger contents are purged with nitrogen (N2) immediately after sample collection to remove dissolved sulfur dioxide (SO2) gases from the impinger. The organic and aqueous fractions are dried and the residues are weighed. The total of the aqueous and organic fractions represents the CPM.

This media meets requirements for standard method 2540D and EPA Method 160.2 for establishing water quality in suspended solids content.

ALUNDUM® THIMBLES (CERAMIC)Alundum® Thimbles are used for in-stack filtration for process engineering studies when a large sample is needed for analyses. These thimbles are made from fused alumina oxide and remain very constant in weight and can be re-used an infinite number of times. There are two different porosity thimbles that can be used in the SFA-300 thimble holder. The medium porosity retain particles 5 micron and larger and the coarse retain particles 20 micron and larger.
PTFE COATED GLASS FIBER FILTERS PTFE Coated Glass Fiber Filters are constructed from borosilicate microfibers and bonded with PTFE. The filters can be folded & handled without loss of fibers. Great for especially low loading rates. Specifically recommended for Method 26 & PM10 sampling.

IN-STACK THIMBLES AND ACCESSORIES Apex Instruments stocks a variety of Fiber Thimbles for in-stack particulate sampling. The thimbles are seamless, high purity filters and available from a choice of two different types of fibers: Borosilicate glass and quartz. Borosilicate glass fiber thimbles are acid washed to reduce the trace metal content to an absolute minimum. Quartz fiber thimbles are strengthened with alumina and are prefired at 900°C for 2 hours during manufacturing to stabilize the weight prior to use. The gas collection efficiency of the thimbles is 99.9% (0.3 micron DOP). The 25 x 90mm thimbles are specifically manufactured for stack sampling and tapered for ease in loading. Cellulose thimbles are available upon request.

METER CALIBRATION
CALIBRATION SERVICESApex performs both calibrations using a wet test meter and bell-prover primary standard. Calibration services are available from Apex Instruments on a fee per console basis. Extra charge for low flow. All console and dry gas meter calibrations are conducted in accordance with U.S. EPA standards. Apex Instruments calibrates source sampler consoles, reference dry gas meters, orifices and pitots.

The Model W-NK Wet Gas Meter is a net-volume type integrating flowmeter that employs a drum as the metering element. As the drum is sealed with water or other fluid, the Model W-NK provides the measurement of any gas irrespective of the gas specific gravity and viscosity. Further, since this gas meter permits the measurement of very small flows, exhibits high reproducibility, and offers various other excellent features, it properly serves as a standard as well as a testing instrument.

We will be pleased to furnish quotations by phone, fax or e-mail. Terms of payment are Net 30 days with established credit, or by Visa/MasterCard/American Express at time of order. Invoices over 30 days past due are subject to 1.5% per month finance charge.

ShIPMENTS ANd dELIVERYUnless otherwise instructed, shipments are made as soon as possible after receipt of order by method of transportation which in our judgement will be most satisfactory. Freight charges are prepaid and added to the invoice. The right is reserved to make partial shipments where delays beyond our control may delay a portion of the order.

RETURNEd ITEMSAuthorization must be obtained from us before returning any goods. When requesting return authorization, please advise reason for return, date of purchase, your P.O. number and our invoice number. Equipment produced to special specifications are not returnable. All returns must be shipped freight prepaid at the purchasers expense and are subject to a restocking fee.

The sole and exclusive remedy for defective goods shall be to repair or replace defective parts or payment price of the goods for which damages are claimed at APEX INSTRUMENTS, INC.’s option. Freight for return of defective items will be at the sole discretion of APEX INSTRUMENTS, INC.
