K-2 Gymnastics Due to school photo days next week, there will not be any gymnastics for K-2 children on Tuesday. Please ensure full winter school uniform is worn to school, instead of sports uniform. Year 1 Recyclable/craft products needed Year 1 students had a fabulous time on their excursion last Thursday, to Bernie Mullane Sports Complex in Kellyville. As part of their science unit in the coming weeks, they will be designing and constructing a piece of playground equipment. To complete this task, students will need to bring in craft items or recyclable products from home such as: cardboard tubes – from wrapping paper, kitchen towel, foil or plastic wrap (not toilet rolls), small cereal boxes and 600mL or smaller, plastic drink bottles. Year 6 Camp 129 excited Year 6 students left early Monday morning for the three day camp to Canberra as part of our History unit: Australia as a Nation. The students have visited Parliament House, the Australian Mint, the National Museum of Australia and Questacon among many other venues. The students are having a fabulous time learning about how laws are made in Australia and one group even had the opportunity to meet a member of parliament. We anticipate a 5:30pm return to school and will keep parents informed via the Skoolbag app.

Literacy Program During Literacy groups, students work through a series of activities designed to target their specific literacy needs. Some of these activities include: guided reading with the teacher, phonics, sight words, fine motor skills, alphabet work, letter formation and ICT activities. While reading with the teacher, the students are learning to retell the story using an introduction such as “This story is about….” and then outlining the main events in sequence. The students are also involved in discussions regarding the text and teachers are working towards developing their ability to derive meaning from the story or information text.

Letters & Sounds: Teachers are continuing to assess all single sounds taught so far this year. Students are being encouraged to blend sounds together to write and read simple words independently.

Sight words: Students are learning the Green Words on the next few weeks in class. Please assistance students to recognise these words when reading or writing at home.

Green Words – big, did, who, new, now, can, get, her, she, out, our, old, two, has, see, off

Fine motor skills activities for home: lacing a shoe or beading a necklace.

Numeracy Program Class are continuing to work through the topics: Addition and Volume & Capacity. Students are learning to count-on from the bigger number, this is done by using both numeral and dot dice. Activities will include using concrete materials or fingers to model and solve simple addition tasks. Using visual representations such as ten frames, counting on their fingers or counters are all acceptable methods of tracking a count.

In Volume and Capacity lessons, students will explore the concept through hands-on experiences of filling different containers with different materials. Students will also expand their vocabulary of measurement words such as full, empty, half-full.

Shoe Boxes Needed! In a few weeks Kindergarten will be making a zoo enclosure suited to a chosen animal. To make the enclosure, the students will require a shoe box – we ask that if you have any shoe boxes at home that you no longer need, to please bring them into class.

Grandparents Photos KB, KC and KJ students are asked to bring in a photo of their grandparent during this week and next week. Please refer to the note sent home or contact class teacher for more information. Photos can be emailed to the class teacher.

The Book Fair is being held in the Library this week and next. The classes will be visiting the Book Fair this week to view the books and write a wish list. Classes will have opportunities to purchase from the Book Fair during the below designated times in Week 6.

Book Fair Buying Days: KB, KC, KG and KT – Monday June 4 KK and KJ – Tuesday June 5

Chicken Pox We have a confirmed case of Chickenpox in our school. Chickenpox is a common childhood illness. Fever and cold symptoms are often the first signs of illness and are followed by the appearance of the typical rash. The rash starts as small pink bumps, often around the neck, ears, back and stomach. These develop a little water blister, which in turn becomes yellow and oozy and ultimately crusty as it dries. The rash spreads outwards to involve the whole body finally involving the lower arms and legs. People may have only a few spots or may be virtually covered with them. Chickenpox is likely to be a relatively mild illness and no specific precautions are necessary. Symptoms usually develop 10 to 21 days after exposure. If your child has a weakened immune system, please contact your child’s GP or hospital consultant and let them know that your child may have been exposed. Stewart House Clothing Appeal Wednesday June 13

Stewart House is a charity that provides care and support for children in need. Our school continues to support Stewart House by participating in two big clothing collections each year. Our first collection will be on Wednesday June 13 and just like last year; we are aiming to fill the Stewart House truck with bags of clothing. Stewart House benefits financially from collections of clothing from schools. The Smith Family pays Stewart House for each kilogram of clothing they receive. About $25,000 is raised each year from clothing collections. Please support Stewart House by placing any clean, unwanted clothing that you no longer need in clean plastic bags and return them to your child’s classroom. Any clean plastic bag can be used. Please

bring bags of clothing to school before Wednesday June 13. Clothing bags can be stored in your child’s classroom until the collection day. Thanks for your support.

The Scholastic Book Fair is here

In our school library!

The Fair will be on until

Wednesday June 6.

There will be a range of fiction and non-fiction books for sale to satisfy all reading interests and ages. The Book Fair is a wonderful opportunity for children to purchase books they love to read! It is also a positive way to give back to our school as 30% of all sales is returned to us so we can purchase books for our library.

If you have any crystals, geodes or other such rocks and would like to donate them to the library please come and see me. Thank you

Silvia Georgiades

This Term, Years 3 and 4 are investigating and learning about products. To further support this unit of study, there will be an interactive table in the library with `old’ vintage products (such as old radios, kitchen implements/tools, telephones, toys, gadgets and/or small simple machines) so that students can observe and discuss how products have evolved and changed over time.

On-line entries now open. Log in and start reading!

no responsibility will be accepted in the unlikely event that any items are damaged or lost. All items will need to be collected week 10 (2-6 July). Thank you for your support.

The PSB is a competition open to all students in Years 3-6 to engage and challenge them in developing their spelling and vocabulary knowledge. Students are tested on a range of levels words and these are provided on the Arts Unit

website at the following link https://www.artsunit.nsw.edu.au/2018-premiers-spelling-bee and using the password dazzle. Maths Olympiad The Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) is a not-for-profit, professional organisation that offers a range of mathematical competitions for students aged from around eight to 14. The programs are unique in that they focus on the students' ability to solve mathematical problems in a creative manner - as opposed to simply reaching a solution using a prescribed method. The APSMO Maths Olympiad has been operating in primary schools since 1987 and in high schools since 2003. Each year thousands of schools participate in the competition from around Australia and New Zealand. Students at Castle Hill Public School who have been participating in teacher guided Mathematics workshops will be taking part in five formal activities under test conditions. The dates are: Wednesday May 23 Week commencing June 11 Week commencing July 23 Week commencing August 13 Week commencing September 10 The first activity was last Wednesday in Mrs Alibrandi's classroom (2A). It is each student’s responsibility to ensure that they are present at each activity in order to be awarded a certificate of completion at the end of the program. If you have any questions about Maths Olympiad please feel free to contact Mrs Alibrandi, Ms Sauniere or Mrs Walker. Friday June 1, 2018 All buses leave school at 12:10pm and return by 2:55pm.

Hi everyone, We recently celebrated National Volunteer Week and I just wanted to thank all the parents and grandparents who take the time to help in our school. Whether it is in canteen, the uniform shop, at events or in the classroom, your help is very much appreciated by both the School and the P&C. Without your help, the P&C would not be able to run their events so we are grateful for your efforts. Thank you to all the parents currently helping with the Book Fair. This is a massive event and will bring in new books for our classroom and library as well. The students are excited about it as well so look at their wish list or pop in later this week to look at the range of books. The fair will run until the June 6. Anyone wishing to help please email [email protected] so we can fill in any gaps. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday June 13 at 7.00pm in the staffroom. Please come along so you can meet the School Executive team, find out more about what is happening at the school and have your say on potential designs for our Kiss and Drop area. We also welcome any suggestions for potential projects around the school.

Katherine Mullen P&C President
