Project DetailsSchool sports halls are frequently used for a wide range ofactivities such as practice sessions, standard lessons, inter-school tournaments, and formal exams. each of these has specific recommended light levels, varying from a low 200 lux to 500 lux or above. the hall at St John Fisher College was no different, and turned to pulsar light to refurbish their existing lighting with leD and help it reach the higher recommended levels of light.

Formerly fitted with 90 116W t5 fluorescent tubes, the installation regularly averaged only 240 lux, well below the recommended levels for exams and competitive sports. the high number of fixtures consumed more than 60,000 kWh per year over its regular 105 hour/week operation (including both school hours and commercial operation in the evenings and weekends) and resulted in annual electricity bills of over £6,000. an additional maintenance cost of £4,500 also contributed to the high running cost of the hall with frequent replacements of flickering or failed lamps.

the pulsar light eco-range solution has made a huge difference to the hall, and not just with a significant reduction in electricity and maintenance costs. the 40 new 130W Sport 130 leD fittings have halved the overall load and a new control system has further reduced energy consumption. a set of switches allows direct control over the scheme to create the best light any activity, with three primary settings averaging 300, 500 and 700 lux.

in addition to this, the quality of light is dramatically improved. an 80+ Cri clearly illuminates people and team colours, and the flicker free sources create a distraction free environment perfect for fast-paced sports like tennis or basketball as well as during periods of intense concentration during mocks and end of year exams.

the high efficiency leD installation is set to consume only 17,035 kWh per year - an impressive 73% reduction. immediately this has saved the college £4,728 in energy costs, and the long fixture lifespan eliminates maintenance requirements for at least 12 years if used at their current rate of 15 hours per day all year round - another £4,500.

By asking pulsar light to refit the college’s sports hall, St John Fisher received an integrated design and install service with a high quality UK made leD lighting solution. the scheme has greatly improves the quality of their sports

lighting while reducing running costs and eliminating nearly all maintenance requirements.
