INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT BACKGROUND : The flyover is considered dirty and dangerous. It is a space to rush through on your way from train to bazaar. But, this need not be so. We see the space under the flyover as having wonderful potential. It is sheltered from the rain and from the heat of the sun. Amazingly, it is also free of much of the politics, land tenure disputes and real estate speculation that plague much of Bombay. The flyover itself was proposed as necessary civic infrastructure. Why can’t this idea be extended below as well? What better place to open up a little room for the citizens of the city? With a few small interventions and amenities, we believe that this patch of land could be completely transformed. Site proposed in Surat itfself. Surat is also known as city of flyovers having the highest number of flyover in India. Surat will have 94 flyovers till 2015 end and till now 63 are constructed. This has significantly cut down the commuting time for mostly people travelling to the diamond and textile districts. But on other hand it occupies good amount of area underneath it which goes waste which shows a concern for an alternative use. The underneath space of fly over's can be used for variety of public activities and civic infrastructure. The flyover ‘s are essentially to cut down the commuting time and for easy traffic flow. More often large portion of space is left unused, which makes us as designers to convert it in to useful space for city people. The space can be used for variety of purposes such as: 1.Market place (seasonal or at different time during the day). 2.Night shelter for urban poor's. 3.Public toilets 4.Recreational spaces 5.Parking 6.Temporary exhibitions 7.Celebration space . etc More activities can be identified by analyzing the area and designing the space accordingly so it appears to be more realistic.

INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT BACKGROUND :

The flyover is considered dirty and dangerous. It is a space to rush through on your way from

train to bazaar.

The space can be used for variety of purposes such as:

1. Market place (seasonal or at different time during the day).2. Night shelter for urban poor's.3. Public toilets 4. Recreational spaces5. Parking6. Temporary exhibitions 7. Celebration space . etc

More activities can be identified by analyzing the area and designing the space accordingly so it appears to be more realistic.

AIM:

OBJECTIVES:

SCOPE OF WORK AND LIMITATIONS:

The aim of the project is to design underneath spaces of flyover for public purpose.

• To understand city issues and necessity of particular area and provide functional solutions to it.

• To understand multiple use of particular space along the day and season wise in limited area.• To provide space for daily public activities which is viable.• To provide night shelter for urban poor. • To attempt sustainability in civic infrastructure provided and urban green scape.

• 95 fly over’s gives fair enough space to tackle smaller city level issues.• Opportunity for exploration and creativity in a defined space.• Can eliminate road encroachment due to illegal parking and shacks. • Unutilized space converted into productive one.• Limited to only flyover’s and not ramps.• Limited amount of space availability.• Limited for only some types of public activities and for amount of public.• No future expansions possible.

MATHODOLOGY :

The first thing of whole process is the to analysis of the site, and then identify issues of the site. After that deriving the Aim and objective of the project. How to give proper solution to the issue. After doing case study of similar project , doing analysis of that project ,how they done the work and fulfill the requirements, how respond to site and other things. After doing case study , identify key words of my project and make a program of project. Then I proceed to how whole project is done.

The JJ flyover, runs from the Crawford Market area all the way to Byculla, jumping over some of the densest and most frantic neighborhoods of Mumbai. It is a mess of traffic above and a mess of traffic below. All accommodations are made for the car and truck, while pedestrians are left to fend for themselves.  While the flyover features prominently on all maps of Mumbai, the space beneath it is a curiously overlooked space.

Still, a host of activities happen here nonetheless.  In the mornings, informal markets spring up selling everything from chai to chickens, fish to fruit. Street children play games; mothers wash clothing, cook food and sell small goods in the tiny leftover spaces of intersections and traffic medians. In the evening, food stalls set up shop and laborers gather to share food and drink, some eventually falling asleep in the vacated parking spaces.
