Casa de Macau Toronto
First of all, I would like t o w e l c o m e o u r n e w members who joined over April and May. Thank you for joining.
Next I would like to thank a l l our vo lunteers and p a r t i c i p a n t s w h o c o n -tributed to the successful bowling event held on April 27th.
I would also like to thank Pedro Rozario and Virginia Sanchez and their helpers fo r organ i z i n g the 1 s t Thursday socia ls during April and May, as well as their contribution which brought full house attend-ance both times.
The Casa's focus this year will be (1) to make sure that the culture of the Portuguese from Macau in some shape or form is in all our events, (2) to produce plays and songs in Patuá for one or two events at least and (3) to help the young g e n e r a t i o n t o t a k e ownership of their role in the Casa.
We want to maintain our ‘Gastronomia’ program. In the past, we rented space in a p ro fe s s iona l cook ing school with appropriate k i tchens . Our member, Cintia Serro, led a couple of t h e s e v e r y s u c c e s s f u l events. This year we are planning along the same lines to hold a ‘workshop de co z i nh a Mac aen se ’ , possibly in the fall. More information to follow in our next newsletter.
At our June and December events, we will have the Maquista band ‘Os Ecos de Macau’ playing traditional and popular ‘patuá’ songs, i . e . , ‘Mama iou quero ’ ; ‘Macau sã assi’; ‘Longi Di Terra Amado’ and 'Macau - terra minha’. We are also participating in the Bastiana contest.
Youths Game and Movie night is a new activity we are introducing to attract our teenage and young a d u l t m e m b e r s . T h e participants are welcome to take an active part in the
planning and organizing of their event.
T h i s f a l l , w e w i l l b e co-hosting an event with Macao Club for the first time. This joint event will showcase Macau culture a n d w i l l f e a t u r e a n exhibition of 80 works of art by local and Macau artists.
In the future, we also hope to introduce Portuguese F o l k D a n c e ( D a n ç a F o l c l ó r i c a ) a n d t o p a r t i c i p a t e i n e v e n t s o r g a n i z e d b y o t h e r Portuguese communities in Toronto.
You are a l l i nv i ted to participate in del ivering these projects. Volunteer leaders and helpers are u r g e n t l y n e e d e d . T h e contribution of your time and expertise are our most valued resource and we hope you will join.
See you at the Dia!Carlos

PatuáMacau Patuá has a history that goes back to the arrival of the Portuguese in Macau in the 16th century and the language was handed down from one generation to the next through speech and songs. Today, fewer than 50 people in the world speak the language, with the youngest speakers grandparents and older who speak the language partially and infrequently. There is little hope for the language to be spoken by many, but much can
be recorded and kept from disappearing without a trace. The Casa is working towards storing as many recordings as possible on our webpage in future.
Here are a few recordings by Casa members that are accessible through our website. Under the Patuá tab, ‘select a video’ for your listening pleasure:
