About Carlson Tractor & Equipment

Our Family BusinessCarlson Tractor & Equipment traces its beginnings to 1953 when CliffordCarlson opened a Ford tractor dealership when the local Ford dealerdecided to split the tractor business from the automobiles. Clifford had afarm in the area and was always happy with his Ford tractors. The Orstlocation was in Hastings, and Clifford quickly expanded the equipmentlines to include construction and aggregate equipment to serve thenearby expanding Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.

Clifford’s sons, Ron and Rich, grew up in the business, pitching in after schooland on weekends, working in every critical department—sales, service, rental and parts. In 1972 their father began passing along the company reinsinto their capable hands. Today, Ron is president and Rich is vice president, and the third generation of Carlsons has joined the management group.Ron’s son Ben is the sales manager, and son Chris heads up the salesdepartment for crushing and screening equipment. Rich’s daughter SarahLauer wears several hats, in accounting, Onancing and HR, and his nephew,Jason Kuhn, is the parts and service support manager.

The rest of the management team is part of a family that extendsbeyond the Carlsons—the Carlson Tractor & Equipment family. Both theparts and service managers at Rosemount joined the company over 35years ago; Russ Kraft is the service manager, and Keith Juhnke is theparts manager. Several mechanics have been with the company morethan 25 years.

The same values that have made Carlson Tractor & Equipment awonderful place to work ensure that its customers receive Orst classtreatment. Clifford Carlson’s principles continue to guide the day-to-dayoperations. “Anybody can sell the Orst machine, but it takes parts andservice to sell the second, third and fourth.” The adage is taken seriously, and in many cases, the second and third generations of Carlsons areworking with the second and third generations of customers.

What is an oil analysis?Fluids are taken from several areas in your equipment and are analyzedby laboratories to determine levels of contaminants in the various fluids. The level of each contaminant is compared to normal wear rates, so thatpotential problems with components can be identified before failure. The trends for the contaminant levels in your equipment also providevaluable information on potential problems.

Carlson monitors your oil analyses. We will provide guidance onnecessary repairs and filter and oil change intervals, based on the results foryour equipment.

Sampling IntervalsManufacturers recommend sampling intervals for each model. Alsoconsider how critical each piece of equipment is to your production indetermining sampling frequency. You may want to reduce the hoursbetween sampling periods for equipment operating under morestressful conditions, such as those in a very hot, dirty environment, ormachines used for short trips with heavy loads, or those with excessiveidle times.

General Guidelines for Sampling IntervalsEngines 250 hours or at manufacturer’s recommended

• Identify minor problems to avoid major failures.• Extend equipment life—Contaminant levels in fluids dictate

when to replace filters.• Increase oil drain intervals—The condition of your oil indicates

when oil changes are actually necessary.• Increase resale value—Oil analysis records prove your

equipment has been maintained.• Anymake, anymodel
