Welcome to the Tour of Britain 2013

We are delighted the tour of Britain will return to the region this september, holding its first ever full stage in Cumbria, the lake district on Monday 16 september. this year, the UK’s largest free-to-watch live sporting event is expected to feature both olympic and tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins and serial tour de France stage-winner Mark Cavendish.

riders will be warming up from 9am before leaving market square in Carlisle at 10.45am. they will then head over to Cumbria’s rugged west

coast taking in Cockermouth, Workington and Whitehaven before tackling the formidable Honister Pass.

speeding through the lake district’s spectacular scenery, competitors go through Keswick, ambleside, and Bowness on Windermere before arriving at the notoriously steep finish up Beast Banks in the lively market town of Kendal, from 3.30pm onwards.

For full details on the Cumbria, the lake district stage, visit www.tourofbritain.co.uk

DID YOU KNOW?

Wonderful way to exerciseCumbria’s public health leaders are hoping growing interest in cycling will help promote the health benefits of pedal power to more residents in the county.Cycling is riding high, with the county council’s most recent traffic counting survey showing the number of cyclists rose by 10.6% for Carlisle and 7.3% for Kendal.

regular cycling can reduce the risk of long-term illnesses such as heart disease, type-2 diabetes and strokes, as well as reducing stress levels and keeping weight under control. For example, someone weighing 80kg (12st 9lb) will burn more than 650 calories during an hour’s cycling.

Because cycling is a low impact type of exercise, it’s easier on your joints than running or other high-impact aerobic activities - but it still helps you get into shape.

herdymade to make you smile!

Firstly, there’s a unique one-off stage Winner jersey designed by a Cumbrian school child. all of Cumbria’s primary schools were encouraged to enter the competition to design both a jersey and the flag to start the race in Carlisle - nearly 1,600 brilliant entries came flooding in. the lucky pupils will receive their own jersey/flag plus a £150 voucher to spend at Carlisle’s scotby Cycles.

another unique one-off for the winner is a golden herdy® trophy. Produced by Kendal

based designers the Herdy Company, this trophy captures a growing brand for the county. Based on the money-storing herdy® banks, the hand-cast ceramic trophy is painted in pure-gold metallic paint and mounted on Cumbrian slate. “it will be a uniquely Cumbrian memento of the day, a special jewel for the winner” says the company’s co-founder spencer Hannah.

to cap it all, the winner in Kendal gets a big bar of Kendal mint cake in a special commemorative wrap, designed by a local school girl.

after coming up through the ranks of juniors and amateur cycling clubs, the trophy cabinet of the tour’s cyclists will be overladen. But the winner of the Cumbria, the lake district stage may want to make some room for a few special mementoes.

You’re no stranger to Cumbria, are you?that’s right, i do quite a lot of training in the county, mainly in the south lakes area, cycling up through Bowness and ambleside and back down the other side of Windermere. i cycle anything from 40 to 100 miles a day and on longer rides i head up to the Keswick area.

Where’s your favourite place in the county to cycle?i really like the Borrowdale area. it’s generally nice and quiet for riding on the roads and i’ve got good memories of the area from my school days when i spent time there on duke of edinburgh trips.

How much are you looking forward to the Cumbria, The Lake District stage?it’s going to be great, racing through places close to where i’ve grown up. i think a lot of my friends and family will be coming to watch and support me, which will be brilliant. there’s never been a full stage of the tour through the lake district before, which makes it extra special for me.

Which section of the route will be the hardest?the descent from Honister will definitely be the biggest challenge – it’s really steep and the road is narrow and twisty with a difficult surface, so that’ll be very tough, especially if it’s wet. With a field of 200 riders going down there, it could be carnage but at least i know what to expect.

Jack’s on track for a home run

Professional rider Jack Pullar has good reason to relish Stage 2 of this year’s Tour of Britain. For 23-year-old Jack will be virtually on home soil when he races through Cumbria for the Madison Genesis Racing Team. Jack hails from just over the Lancashire border in Bolton-le-Sands so knows the area’s roads better than most. We caught up with the reigning national hill climb champion.

How did you become a professional rider?i’ve been cycling for about seven years. i started as a mountain biker and used to do the Grizedale Mountain Bike Challenge. i studied for a degree in entertainment management at leeds University and raced for the Cumbria-based Wheelbase team last year, and was then scouted for the Madison Genesis team. this is my first year as a professional rider, which has been my ambition since i started cycling, and i’m enjoying every minute.

We share our water supply with the environment, so being careful not to waste it makes sense for places like the Lake District, where a third of the North West’s tap water starts its journey every day.

Thirlmere is one of the North West’s largest reservoirs and forms the backdrop to stage 2 of the Tour of Britain: the Lake District stage.

Although Cumbria is generally considered to be a wet county, there’s a limited number of reservoirs and long, dry periods can put them under more strain.

For our part we take a lot of care to balance the demand for water with the supplies we have available. That means fi xing leaks and upgrading old pipes as part of our £3.5 billion regional investment programme.

Be water wiseIt makes sense to use water wisely, whatever the weather.

Don’t pour money down the drainSaving water is not just good for the planet; it can be good for your bank balance too.

The average person uses 150 litres of water every day. As much as half of it is heated by gas or electricity before you use it. So cutting down, especially on hot water usage, can help you keep your energy bill down as well.

For instance, on average a washing machine uses 75 litres of water and a dishwasher 30 litres, every time you use it. By waiting until you have a full load before pressing ‘start’, you’ll save energy and water.

A third of the water you use goes straight down the toilet. Modern loos with a dual fl ush can save several litres every time you spend a penny.

But even if you have an older toilet, fi tting one of our free save-a-fl ush devices can make a big difference, and you don’t need to be a plumber to do it. Simply pop it in the cistern.

Water is a precious resource, and if we all use it responsibly, there will be plenty to go round – not just in your home but in the lovely Lake District too.

• A garden sprinkler can use as much water in an hour as a family of four would use in a day

• Leaving the tap running wastes 9 litres of water a minute

• A dripping tap can waste a bath of water a week

• You can use a water butt to collect rain water from your roof rather than use treated drinking water on your garden

• Using mulch around plants can reduce evaporation, so they don’t need watering as often.
