‘They may just have been learning about teamwork, the joy of cycling and
the importance of making the most of opportunities. In the afternoon the
children learnt even more about hard work and dedication, watching the
elite athletes whizzing through Grasmere. They also learnt a lot about the
world of work. Around the race was a whole world of other jobs, police
motorbike outriders, paramedics, bike mechanics, judges. Amazing. We’re
so lucky!’

‘Our young people really enjoyed the privilege of riding the opening km
of the Tour of Britain, they were so excited taking part in such a big
event.
Most of school watched the tour coming through, they enjoyed being part
of a big community sporting event. We are making a short film of the
pupils riding and supporting to show in assembly this week. A great time
was had by all, their learning has not only been about cycling but also
about teamwork, safety at big events, and being part of their local
community.
Thanks again, you’re always welcome to visit us on Thursdays at bike
club.’

Feedback‘As it happens it was not a great days takings at The Toy Shop, but I know the
fantastic press that Cockermouth and the western lakes will get from this
internationally covered race will benefit my business and the wider economy for
years to come.
It was, however, a GREAT day for cafes, takeaways and probably hotels and b&bs.
They need a boost just as much as retailers.
It was also a GREAT day for the thousands of spectators young and old who came
from near and far to watch a spectacle that delivered on so many levels. Had I not
taken a penny over the counter I would still have enjoyed today for the buzz it
brought to town.
The benefits in future visitor numbers, children’s physical activity, adult’s health
(even I feel enthused to get on my bike) and the reputation of Cumbria and Allerdale
as a place where national sports events can happen is probably incalculable.
Don’t be swayed by the whiners, they moan about anything and everything. Well
done for bringing a memorable event to the area. Now get on and do it all again!’
