Athletics Program at Carlisle School Athletics play an integral role in the development of our students at Carlisle School. Our student-athletes are expected to perform at the highest level on the field of competition, in the classroom, and in the community. Carlisle’s Field Hockey program has a strong tradition of excellence. Over the past few years, the hockey program has had a stronghold in the Blue Ridge Conference, with eleven conference titles since 1998. The hockey programhas had much success on the state level, with two state title wins in recent history; Carlisle has made the state semi-finals every since 2006. The program has had many athletes to win awards on both the conference and state level, and many girls have gone on to high level collegiate programs within the last seven years, includ-ing UVA, Lynchburg College, Appalachian State Univer-sity, Christopher Newport University, University of Mary Washington, Radford University, Randolph-Macon Col-lege, and Sewanee.

Carlisle School soccer is a year round soccer program. We have highly motivated student-athletes who pride themselves on good grades in the classroom and good play on the field. They all share a common goal: to ob-tain a premier college preparatory education and elite soccer training. Carlisle combines high level academics with high level soccer training and games. The coaches at Carlisle School are dedicated to making sure that ac-ademics comes first, and academic success is held high in the minds of the coaches. The program meets every day at 3:45 for training at the state of the art Smith Riv-er Sports Complex.

A relatively new program at Carlisle, the volleyball team has experienced a large amount of growth over the past few years. The volleyball team is comprised of girls who work together on and off the court to help each teammate rise to her full potential. Under the coaching of Juliana Carter, a former Division III volleyball player for Emory and Henry College, our volleyball players gain a strong foundation of athletic skills, regardless of their skill level, as well as a mentor who encourages them to do their best in the classroom as well. She believes that “hard works yields successful results if the mental and physical aspects of the body are trained simultaneously,”

Carlisle’s boys’ basketball team is coming off anextremely successful season, with a conference cham-pionship and a run deep in the state tournament under their belts. The high level of talent on the team is ably de-veloped by head coach Jason Niblett, who has consider-able coaching experience both locally and in the college ranks. Players improve their skills by learning from the coaching staff and each other. Emphasis is also placed on putting the same effort into their studies as they do on the court; the team’s average GPA as of the most recent grading period was 3.98 on a 4.0 scale.

A program which has 4 state titles to its name, Carlisle’s girls’ basketball team has had much success over the years, and has had several players go on to play basketball at the collegiate level. The current team is young and talented, and is looking forward to building on their success they had this past year. Underthe expertise of head coach Mancino Craighead, experienced players fine-tune their skills, while newer players learn the basics - there is a place for everyone on the team.

The Carlisle fencing program is a growing program built on a solid foundation set by our last group of seniors. All team members gain a strong foundation of skills that they then develop over the course of their career. Each member participates and fences in each tournament. We compete in the North Carolina Fencing League in such venues as Elkin, Chapel Hill, Durham, and Wilm-ington. The program enjoys tremendous parental in-volvement and support and is always looking for new members who are interested in learning more about the sport.

The Carlisle golf team has long had a reputation of excellence on the golf course. Head coach P. C. Wells fosters a competitive environment that develops and improves the skill level of every player as well as respects the traditions of the game. The golf team has access to high quality facilities, as practices and home tournaments are held at the 18-hole J. Ellis Maples golf course at Chatmoss Country Club, located about one mile from campus.

Carlisle baseball is currently undergoing a resur-gence after graduating several experienced players, however, there is a strong core of up-and-coming players who are eager to make their mark on the program. Our dedicated and experienced staff, led by head coach Jackie Gammons, focuses on the fundamentals of the game and develops our young men as players and peo-ple. Home games are played on campus at the Leisy Baseball Field.

The future of Carlisle softball looks bright, as the team is made up of a younger group of girls who all have the drive and dedication to learn the game. Long-time head coach Jerry Adkins, who is entering his twelfth year at the head of the program, brings a vast amount of ex-perience and knowledge of the sport to the team. The coaching staff works with each player to make sure they are well versed in the fundamentals of the game, and older team members help the younger players during practice as well.

Carlisle School

facilitiesOur athletic facilities on campus include several playing fields, as well as two gymnasiums.

The Dick Hensley Athletic Field features a multipurpose lighted field with an underground automatic irrigation system used for soccer and football, as well as the Leisy Baseball Field. Friends Field is home to our softball field as well as a multipurpose field.

The Main Gym plays host to our basketball and volleyball teams, while the Hart Gym is also available as a practice facility.

Carlisle is fortunate to have access to a couple of off-campus facilities as well.

Smith River Sports Complex, a premiere 90-acre multi-use sports facility located about five minutes from campus, is home to our soccer and field hockey teams. The tennis teams and golf team practice and play their home matches at Chatmoss Country Club, located about one mile from campus.
