Caring and Sharing at Hannah Penn

The Monday Memo

This year Hannah Penn held it’s first “Caring and Sharing Event.” Every stu-dent in the building was given an assign-ment requiring them to think of a per-son who cares for them and to do something (write a letter/ essay, make a card, draw a picture, create a video) to thank the person for caring. The crea-tion would be shared with the person who cares during an Open school event on the last day before the break. Students took time to complete the assignments, knowing that the project would be presented to the person they

selected.

Once the assignments were complete, we opened our doors and invited those individuals in so that the child could share the assignment with the person selected. Over 200 parents and family members came to participate in the event. The students were excited to show off the person who cares for them to staff members and were proud to share the products they designed in honor of the person. Parents and family members were overcome with emo-tion as the students explained why each person was chosen as a person who

cares.

There was an award for each class-room winner and all students were surprised at the end of the day with two gifts arriving to their classrooms to take home for themselves. This was the schools attempt to let students know that we care. The event was time consuming and challenging but with the support of the staff members, their families, friends, churches, local busi-nesses and organizations, it was a suc-

cess.

Gingerbread pirates and slime!

On December 20, 2017 shortly after breakfast the sound of jingle bells inundated the main office at Jack-son. Upon emerging from our offices we noticed a large gentleman dressed in a red and white suit and sporting a long white beard. Could this be who we think it is? Yes!!! – it was Santa Claus himself – in person. Santa arrived at Jackson to wish all the staff and students a wonderful Holiday. Santa spent time having his picture taken with the students and even some of the staff. Santa also gave out small gift bags to the students. It was an exciting day and everyone loved the experience. Below are some pictures of the

More holiday fun!

Mrs. Jennings MDS classroom read the “The Gingerbread Pirate,” by Kristin Kladstrup and was amazed by the spirited pirates and Captain Cookie. Dr. Shillinsford and Mrs. Means assisted the students in making gingerbread slime for the upcoming winter holiday. The students counted, mixed and stirred the ingredients in the bowl and made beautiful glittery gingerbread slime. The students were able to squeeze, roll, peel, poke and pull apart their slime. It was such a great fine motor exercise and memory that the students will carry with them for years, not

to mention they all smelled like gingerbread.

Girls on the Run at STEAM

3rd through 6th grade girls at the Smith STEAM Academy participated in Girls On The Run this fall. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appre-ciation of health and fitness. The program culminated with the girls completing a celebratory 5K running

event with schools across York County. Congratulations, girls, on your awesome achievement!

Literature arts fair at Jackson

The 5th and 6th Graders at Jackson K-8 held their Literature Arts Fair on Friday, December 15, 2017 in the gym. Students chose a theme from the book they were reading and defended their choice of theme by using text evidence and examples from the book. The students also had to answer five questions relating to their book (What rating from 1-10 would they give their book and why, would they recommend it to a friend and why, their favorite character and why, their favorite part and why, and would they read another book from the same author and why). Most of the students displayed their project via poster board however two students did powerpoint presentation and one student dress up like the character in their book. The fair was open to parents. It was well attended. The students were excited and proud of their

accomplishments.

Congratulations to Talen Brown from Goode K-8, whose artwork was chosen for the 21st Annual Attorney General Drug-Free Cal-endar Contest out of 840 entries. Each year, in conjunction with National Drug Prevention Month, the Pennsylvania Attorney Gen-

eral’s Office sponsors a Drug-Free Calendar Contest. The contest, is open to fifth grade students across Pennsylvania.

Talen and his family attended a luncheon at the Attorney General’s office in Harrisburg during December, with Joe Shapiro, Pennsylva-

nia’s Attorney General and Joe Torsella, Pennsylvania State Treasurer.

WP students leave 80+ scarves for those in need

William Penn student ‘Got Talent’

3rd Annual Scarves in the Park event. Communities In Schools Site Coordinator from McKinley were joined by students from William Penn to tie scarves around trees and light poles in Penn Park. We received over 80 scarves this year, doubling last years donations. Student Council member at McKinley learned about giving back to their community and enjoyed the whole event, one student was disappointed when we ran

out of scarves to tie! Thank you to all that donated and participated this year.

Brandon Lyles recently took a trip to New York so he could audition for

“America’s Got Talent.”

After his audition, the judges smiled, nod-ded and told him he’d receive his next set of instructions in February, his mother

Pauline said.

“This kid keeps me so busy with all of his auditions for plays, TV, dance teams etc,” Pauline told administrators. “Just last month he auditioned for a regional dance competition but wind up being selected by judges for a National Dance Team. I don’t know how we're going to get so much done and still get to California for him to audition for bigger roles. A lot of

his friends have been so supportive.”
