Applications are invited for the position of Chief, Department of Emergency Medicine, at St. Michael’s Hospital (SMH). St. Michael’s is Canada’s leading Catholic Academic Health Sciences Center and is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto.

Located in downtown Toronto, St. Michael’s provides secondary through quaternary care for Toronto, southern Ontario and beyond. Care is organized into the following programs: Heart & Vascular Disease, Trauma and Neurosurgery, Mobility and Neuromusculoskeletal Disorders, Oncology and Specialized Services, Inner City Health and Diabetes Comprehensive Care. The Hospital hosts approximately 521,000 ambulatory visits, and cares for over 25,000 inpatients in more than 460 beds. There are over 30,000 surgeries performed annually and the critically ill are treated in 60 ventilator beds in four separate intensive care units. St. Michael’s strategic plan involves becoming the country’s premier critical care hospital, a direction for which the Emergency Department (ED) is a key component of success. A new patient care tower will be opening in 2018 that includes modernized operating rooms and critical care areas, and the transition to a new “Best in Class” inner city Emergency Department (ED) is underway with a planned completion date in 2020.

The ED receives approximately 75,000 visits per year and has a unique dual mandate in that we provide comprehensive care to a very diverse inner city population and support a number of high profile regional programs. We are a Regional Stroke Center, a Code STEMI Centre, and one of only two Regional Trauma Centres in Toronto serving the GTA and South Central Ontario. The Department has a number of features to help deliver care to our unique population, such as a 24-hour Transition Centre, the only needle exchange program in Toronto, on-site Social Worker and a Geriatrics Emergency Management Nurse. The Department enjoys a close working relationship with a full range of medical and surgical specialties.

The Department seeks an outstanding academic individual with proven strong administrative and leadership skills, in particular with experience and knowledge regarding recruitment and support of academic physicians. Also required are a record of peer-reviewed research, and leadership in undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, continuing medical education or patient education. The Chief will be responsible for clinical and academic matters within the Department and will foster excellence in patient care services. He/she will ensure the growth of the research program and will foster collaborations with the Keenan Research Centre, the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, and external partners.

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree and must be Certified or Examination Eligible in Emergency Medicine, eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario, and eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2018, or as mutually agreed upon.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
