Donald Super Career Counseling Theory
The Developmental Approach of Donald Super complements the creation of guidance curriculum for preschoolers. First, the theory takes the view that choosing a career and managing one’s career development involve a continuous process that carries on through life. Furthermore, it uses the concepts from developmental psychology wherein developmental stages play important roles in the development of the individual’s career. Super created a useful framework that presents the career process in which individuals are confronted in different stages and they must undergo and complete each before moving on to the next stage. The focus of the approach is through the importance of the development of the preschoolers’ skills.
For the preschoolers, they are approaching the first stage of Super’s five life stages which is Growth. Although the range of age between preschoolers is less than the required age of the first stage, it suits the necessary requirements needed for the career pathing of individuals. Growth is the crucial stage of the framework as it will affect the following stages development. Growth is the stage where children develop a self-concept aligned on various elements like actual and perceived physical mental abilities, roles within the family and relationships with peers. Children in this stage begin to develop attitudes and beliefs about the world of work, although the source of information is too limited and narrowed.
